What is up with people posting comments on forums/blogs/whatever making a STATEMENT and finishing it off with question marks? Example: "OMG I LIKE THIS PICTURE IT'S SOOO CUUTTEE ?????????" Or "I want a dog just like that????? It's so nice??" My Virgo Asc does not like. IP: Logged |

Could this be the online version of uptalk? That's considered to sometimes be the gentle and diplomatic way to talk, in which statements are made in the form of a question, which the other person is generally supposed to take as a cue to change their mind with no loss of face. Interesting enough, men are more likely to do it when they're unsure (or talking with women) while women are more likely to do it when they know they're right, which some think is a woman who is "apologizing" for her success, and that successful women who don't use uptalk will gain a lot more resentment rather than respect. 'Course these are all theories, and I bet those studying the phenomenon only checked certain segments of the society and then assumed it was the same among every other demographic as well. But if the endless question marks are the online version of uptalk, then it's essentially saying, "Please don't roast me for having posted on the internet." Of course if you do, they probably won't connect it to all the question marks, but just assume you're one of the hordes of people they can't please looking for targets to vent their own real life frustrations on. That's my best guess anyway. I personally don't know anyone who posts like that. Wait, there was one, but that was a special case. She was from a foreign country who had a hard time posting in English, and I think she was often unsure about how to say what she wanted, which translated into a lot of question marks for her (not a stack of them, but over half of her sentences ended in a question mark when it shouldn't have). I just looked up uptalk to share links and I just found a rant against it that reminded me of this thread: http://youtu.be/LdhJxAmUu3Y?t=21s I haven't heard all of it yet. At least she explains it correctly while also wishing people would stop it. Vengeful Sage in the comments section illustrated uptalk as having a bunch of question marks, so maybe others are doing the same thing, that is the question marks are to indicate that their statements are intended to be "heard" as uptalk. In any case, she gives 4 reasons why people use uptalk. IP: Logged |

I agree with PixieJane. I would like to add that perhaps the question mark also means that the person doesn't understand why they love or hate something so much that they respond with question marks.Using your examples as my example: "OMG I LIKE THIS PICTURE IT'S SOOO CUUTTEE ?????????" Perhaps they are saying. I like this picture, its soo cuuttee that I like it so much I don't understand why (hence: ?) Or "I want a dog just like that????? It's so nice??" Perhaps they are saying. I want a dog just like that, it's so nice. I don't understand why I love your dog so much so let me put question marks. My other explanation is they are also secretly talking to themselves too. I have seen this and it really irked me in the beginning now I just kind of ignore it though it still annoys me.It is a version of the rhetorical question. You'll see it often in intense reactions or in internet arguments. Basically you put those question marks sarcastically to emphasize how obvious your statement is and to make the other person look foolish for even questioning it, like: I'm putting question marks because I'm right ??? because this is so obvious ??? I think it's very rude and bratty. Don't ever get into an argument with someone who types like this, you've already won. IP: Logged |

... Oh No!!! I was researching a topic, clicked on a youtube??, and I'm "hearing" what you're talking about now with UpTalking. You're RIGHT!!! I never noticed it before?, but?, it's annoying!!!*omg... I still laughing. I don't know why that hit me as SO funny?, .. oh but stop it, seriously-- I understand what you're talking about Charlie, et al * ... I think it's probably a trend in certain geographic areas, and might not extinguish itself as a habit for a while. I lived in California for a few years, and even though I've been away for a long time, I still have ~valley girl left in me. hahaha Thanks for the vent???? LOLLOLLLLLL *oh sheesh, maybe I'll go splash some water in my face! hahahahahahahah.* IP: Logged |
