I'm all for powerful female characters. One of my favorite video game series is Metroid and it is famous for being the first major video game series with a female protagonist. I'm all for female characters shining and being the hero - but - and this is a big but - they have to make sense and be realistic within the stories they are in to be good characters.

And unfortunately, it's so often the case that they just aren't realistic or convincing at all. Look at the Star Wars series. All the male leads went through a process of gaining power and had defeats and setbacks along the way, but the first female heroine is bad ass from day 1 and even knows how to work on Han Solo's ship better than him. Why? Because she is a boss b#### female, that's why.

Me and my family tried watching the new Santa Clauses series on Disney+ after dinner yesterday and it was the same thing. All the female characters were always more dominant and capable and calm and the male characters are goofy. Why does Hollywood keep shoving this crap down our throats? It's very annoying and it isn't even realistic. It has nothing to do with people not wanting powerful females or being misogynistic, we just want realistic, believable characters. It would also be nice if they could make convincing powerful female characters without having to rely on the stupid male companion trope to prop her up.

I don't see myself getting too involved in this thread, kinda surprised I'm pointing it out here.

Just wanted to point out that Star Wars had diversity before without complaints. Legends had them thick. The actress who played Black Widow would've been perfect for Mara Jade (Luke Skywalker's wife, after she tries killing him for awhile, in the games and novels and comics now dismissed as "Legends"), and they already had her on the payroll.

I was one of the few to defend Disney buying the Star Wars franchise. I now admit it was a mistake. Despite still loving some old Disney stuff (and much of the newer stuff I like was bought out by Disney after it was made), I pretty much despise the company now for its content as much as its corporate practices.

They were also more "woke" before they tried to be. I can't tell if they're just doing it wrong, or if they're DELIBERATELY sabotaging it while pretending to be trying. That's about everything they make, including remakes where they try to be more woke, but are actually less (whether they realize it or not).

Many who do not like the new female character loved previous ones, including canon ones. I hate the new Star Wars, won't even give the new stuff a chance now (and for more reasons than what the OP brings up). But two of my favorite characters from canon itself were Ahsoka and Ventress (the novels dedicated to both really sealed how much I love these characters, but I refuse to read or watch any new content on them because it's Diseny, and their touch turns gold into poop, though people strangely keep watching even though many talk how much they hated the last remake like the one before and before that, but think this one is somehow going to be different, like wake up and notice the trend, and know as long as they're making money then they're not going to do better).

Ahsoka started out flawed...this sums it up nicely (and only includes the Clone Wars series, not the later books and other media):

Ventress also goes through major changes in the series, and in the novel (which was to be in the last season, but Disney bought them out and canceled it, so that we got a very different season 7 years later), she actually turns toward the Light and humbles Yoda who sees how badly the Jedi have erred, hoping it's not too late for them. And it wasn't that Ventress just woke up today tired of being a villain, it was a slow process, a slow process that continued in the novel, and actually surprised me (but was believable for her character arc) as she turned to the Light, saving Jedi (and returning one who had fallen to the Dark Side) from Dooku.

He pulled it off, at least for me. I don't think I'd have cared for her if Ahsoka wasn't constantly making (and learning from) mistakes that would transform her character (ironically making her one of the best Jedi even after leaving the Jedi Order).

I can list my favorite characters from the pre-Disney Star Wars universe, and I'd say about 2/3rd of them are female. (Also characters who are not white, male and female.) But dislike what was done with the latest trilogy, for reasons I can detail as something of a geek (ranging from theme to lore), and people try to get their woke points with their insincere pandering to feminism and that misogyny is the only reason one could dislike it, for the points, not the actual ideals (like those who promote affordable housing, until it comes to their neighborhood, or those who want to ban hobo costumes at Halloween won't volunteer at a homeless shelter). At least those who seek status through fashion or prized car aren't as irritating.

What's so ironic is I have been in academia since 2015 and I have consistently had elitist liberal type women who looked down on me because I have a thick accent. I recently started a job in a white collar environment and one of the women there remarked "Oh I thought you were one of the public works guys when I first saw you." This comment made no sense because I was dressed in business professional attire with nice leather boots that matched the color of my leather belt. She was just letting me know that she felt I didn't belong there in a not so subtle way. But because this was said by a woman to a man nobody even batted an eye.
