When a planet conjuncts an asteroid such as Pluto conjuncts Deja, Pluto strengthens Deja.
Deja does not weaken Pluto.

How does one figure out WHICH way it goes.

A man had Valentine conjunct Mars in Scorpio in the 5th house.
I think you said Valentine would be weakened to the point where he would NOT be able to have a "Valentine" type of love i.e. sacrificial love.

My question is WHICH way does it go in interpretation?

Thanks for the welcome Ami.
In my experience, it is always the planet that has the upper hand on the Asteroid. The Planet modifies the Asteroid's intensity, and can even totally overshadow the Asteroid's normal traits.
