Cronus, roman Saturn, was the father of the 12 Olympian Gods. He overthrew his father, Uranus, the sky, and became the leader of the gods during the mythological golden age, until he was overthrown by his own sons, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.

Cronus was notorious for eating his children. Rhea tricked Cronus into eating a stone in place of Zeus, the sixth born child. Zeus then was raised somewhere on earth (the stories of how he was raised varies) and when he finally grew up, he used a potion given to him by Gaia to force Cronus to disgorge the contents of his stomach in reverse order, starting with the stone. In an alternate version of the story, it is said Zeus cut open Cronus' stomach to set free his brothers and sisters.

After Zeus freed his older siblings, he set free all of the titans Cronus had locked up, including the Cyclopes, which ensued a war between the current 6 gods and the titans that were locked up and Cronus, and Zeus then became King of the Gods
