I love this question because I also have Kaali (19 Taurus) conjunct Venus (20 Taurus) conjunct Varuna (21 Taurus) conjunct Mercury (22 Taurus) - All opposite Moon (18 Scorpio).

This is what I have found so far about VARUNA. Firstly, it is a Kuiper Belt Object and is in fact a dwarf planet (transPluto). In the mythology of ancient India Varuna was the god of the all-embracing sky, separating the Cosmos from the Chaos and protecting the people from the Evil. According to Vedic texts, his moral greatness and sanctity far surpass all attributed to any other deity. Varuna can be considered as the sublime almagamation of Jupiter/Uranus/Pluto transcended to a cosmic level and combined into one. As a transcended Jupiter, it relates to expanded awareness and joy not on a human level but on a cosmic level. Like Jupiter it is concerned with the law, justice and equity - but supreme laws, not human and cosmic laws, not planetary. It creates a path out of usual limits, and in this sense Varuna is related also to Uranus. Another manifestation of Varuna that correlates with Uranus and Pluto is allied to its role as a boundary planet (the separation of the Cosmos from the Chaos). It can represent death on a large scale. It represents paradigm shifts - brings new ideas out of the darkness as well as problems producing universal effects, new scopes of knowledge and difficulties connected with reclamation of the unknown - all these dawn through Varuna. Varuna represents the " great beyond"..., it is entirely transcendent, non-human, like a "cosmic order" instead of a social order, like the impersonal laws of nature instead of the laws of society... like what is "behind" all that. Varuna is very literally "behind" everything.

For practical purposes, one website I saw suggests this for interpretation of Varuna on a practical level....

"In general, many characteristics of Varuna can rather adequately be presented as a combination of developments of Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. It is quite possible to attribute to Varuna the majority of the descriptions of interaction of these three planets in Ebertin's interpretation (see his "Combinations of stellar influences"): the qualities of the leader, fast use of any situation, "social rushes” (the aspiration to public improvements), pursuing the religious or the philosophical purposes, the achievement of remarkable results", "an unusual aspiration to knowledge and understanding, a strong comprehension of the purpose or tasks of life,a far-seeing creative activity", "the wreck of the old order of things and the construction of a new one", "to put new things in force", but on the other hand "impatience, fanaticism, acts of violence, destructive activity, threat by the weapon, accident".

I haven't got a grip on what my little Venus/Merc stellium with Varuna means yet, or how Kaali can fit into it. Actually, I am only just trying to figure out from other LL threads what Kaali on its own means. But maybe the Varuna part has something to do with my love of and interest in what lies beyond, beneath, behind that I have talked about before in other posts???

PS. Oo! Just read Kaali is dark feminine, tantric sex, kundalini. COOL I definitely can live with that in combo with Varuna, Venus, Merc and Moon!

Here ami are some interpretations of Varuna , I think he was God of the sea celestial ocean as well as the God the underworld almost plutonian /Uranus and watery .. Fatal Transformation processes you go through on a unconscious level In ancient in India he was God of all the embracing sky seperating the cosmos from CHAOS and protecting people from evil He has morals and his greatness surpassed other deitys not doom and evil but Law and almost justice and transformation and positive plutonian influence . Ability to get abroad in ways of achievment and and achieving popularity , Just being able to have success it's strong in the fields of fame . competitions , and battles.. I'm not sureif thats what you wanted the thing about asteroids is so many you can only take the names and the stories of the Gods and try to interpret it thats basically what I thought of Varuna from what I read ...Morally triumphant and the subconciouss battles and transforming I guess to your conciouss ideals and maybe weird success because it was compared to uranus maybe unexpected I'm not sure

I once looked it up and found that Varuna was an ancient Indian sea god, who also represented the cosmic law (which sometimes is not a comfortable thing for us humans).

I had discovered that my family has a strong Atlantis/ Varuna thing.

Dad:
VARUNA conjunct Moon (1)
ATLANTIS conjunct ASC (2)
POSEIDON square ASC (3)

Mum:
VARUNA opposite Sun exact
ATLANTIS conjunct DESC (1)
(Poseidon trine Saturn by 1 degree)

middle brother:
VARUNA conjunct IC (4) though this is probably a bit too wide

ATLANTIS square Neptune (1)

POSEIDON square Varuna (1)
POSEIDON conjunct Venus (2)

youngest brother:
VARUNA square Sun (1)
ATLANTIS conjunct NN (3)
ATLANTIS square ASC (2)
ATLANTIS conjunct IC exact
(POSEIDON square Saturn exact)

Me:
VARUNA conjunct DESC exact (and also conjunct Draco Moon exact)
VARUNA opposes Mars, Poseidon, Atlantis, Angel as well

ATLANTIS conjunct ASC (1)
ATLANTUS conjunct NN and Neptune (2)
ATLANTIS conjunct Angel exact
ATLANTIS conjunct Poseidon exact

POSEIDON conjunct ASC and ANGEL exact
POSEIDON conjunct NN and Neptune (2)

Our family seems to have a common theme of (almost) drowning, especially from maternal side.
My mum had to watch her brother drown and die when she was about 3 or 4 years old (he had been one and a half at that time).

The curious thing is, that I as well, drowned (in a swimming pool) and have been "miraculously" saved (Miraculously because my Dad told me once, that even though he dived for me, he could not see me anywhere, but suddenly I was there again, like "placed over his arm").

And my middle brother, who has the Down syndrom, pulled my youngest brother out of a pond he has been falling into and thus saved his life.

The freaky thing was that my youngest brother and me were the same age as our uncle was when he died! Gives you goosebumps, doesn`T it? It surely gave me.
(also interestingly both my brother and me had been saved by an elder male relative who was having no "drowning-history").

Anyway, I always thought maybe VARUNA (together with Atlantis) were indicator of these strange occurences around water.

That is what I found on Varuna:

"Varuna (2000 WR106) was discovered in 2000 and given designation minor planet 20,000 -- a big honor for the discoverers R. S. McMillan and J. A. Larsen. This was the first planet beyond Pluto to get a name. [It was not the first discovered -- that was 1992 QB1, which has not yet been named.] Varuna has an orbital period of 282 years. Varuna is a mighty god, one of the supreme creation deities of pre-Vedic history, still revered today by many, and this was a landmark astronomical discovery, in part because of its size.

The energy of Varuna is that which is too large to comprehend. In this respect, it has some attributes of the 12th house -- the house of overwhelming or incomprehensible aspects of life that act out of sight or in the deep background.

One astrologer who has done some interesting work with Varuna is Juan Revilla of Costa Rica. In an email conversation a few years ago, Juan explained to me his interpretation that Varuna is quite literally "behind everything" -- a potent and ominous force lingering in the far reaches of our lives. Among the many deities who have had planets and asteroids named for them, Varuna's energy seems closest to what we think of as God, the all-knowing cosmic entity that exists silently behind consciousness and events.

Varuna (now in Cancer) also deals with the punishment of liars and those who violate contracts. In earlier times, mortals who did not keep their word would meet his wrath. He could bestow immortality as well. Astrological associations noted by Revilla include the impersonal laws of nature (as opposed to human nature) and the incomprehensible cosmic order (as opposed to the order of society). Questions of the gain and loss of reputation, and the issue of immortality through fame, seem inevitable with this planet.

My phrase for Varuna is, "the great equalizer."

Ami I finally got to this! Varuna seems to be such a mystery.

From all I had read last night and all the post here I tried to see what each thing I have read has in common. A few thing Varuna has in common everyhwere is realization and healing of some kind. Also I found some info on personal experiences with Sun conjunct Varuna. http://www.astrologyweekly.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-19248.html

it is also specifically to do with Gemini/8th house. Tell me what you get from this.
