I think this is such an important question.
This is my take on how I see it :The inner planets (sun, moon, mercury, venus, mars, moons nodes and the angles have the strongest and most fundamental influence in the chart, as they represent personal issues.
The outer planets (jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune) are the next most important to consider as they describe how we relate our personal selves to that which is more on the collective human experience.
Next are the large Transneptunian dwarf planets (Pluto, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, Sedna, Orcus, Quaoar, Varuna) which link our personal selves to a transcendent level of being. These are more important than asteroids and centaurs because of their larger size, and the fact that the only difference between what defines dwarf and conventional planets is that the orbital neighbourhood of the dwarf is not clear of fragments.
Next in importance would be the primary asteroids (Ceres, Juno, Vesta and Pallas) and the primary centaurs (Chiron, Pholus, Nessus, Absolus, Chariklo and Hylomome).
The asteroids are large fragments in a conventional orbit in the solar system and therefore represent in the chart the fragmented pieces of self which are needed to fill in the missing bits that are otherwise unexplained by the major players. Integration of the issues embodied by the asteroids leads to the ability to interrelate in the world from wholeness, integrity and wisdom.
The centaurs have a different function as they are a different kind of celestial body - they are a combination between an asteroid and a comet that "visits" the solar system periodically - therefore they represent the choices we face and how we use free will to determine our fate.
In my opinion, the smaller objects of all kinds - TNO's, asteroids, centaurs - are generally only influential if they are in very tight orb to a personal planet, or to a special "paired" object (eg. Eros and Psyche). I only really look at 1 degree orbs and conjunctions and oppositions. Other people would disagree with this, and look at squares, trines and sextiles too. However you look at it - these smaller objects are the spice that fill the gaps in the chart and function in the chart the same way as the larger centaurs, TNOs and asteroids, but just with much smaller orbs and more specialised focus.
