Yeah, I'd say your crossing paths with this guy was meant to be and that there are lessons to be learned. They might be painful but you're a Scorp, you'll heal.
Yeah, honestly I can say from personal experience with the Mars-Chiron thing (I was the Chiron), that that's true.
To the OP - It's more than just that. Really the asteroids are secondary. The most important thing is what the luminaries, planets and nodes are doing. If there's little to no activity involving those, then no matter what is really going on with the asteroids, it's probably not a soulmate or twinsoul connection. If it is, you'll see the actual planets, nodes, and vertex, all aspecting each other in blatant ways, in addition the the asteroids.
An example - in synastry between me and my twinsoul there's sun-venus, sun-vertex, vertex-venus, moon-juno, moon-NN, karma-NN, activity going on as well as various aspects between the actual planets, and almost every soulmate asteroid either aspecting each other or landing in prominent places in the other's chart; along with a lot of planetary parallels between each chart. I honestly have yet to see any synastry like that.
It's absolutely true though that twinsoul relationships don't always last, and aren't always easy or pleasant - the composite is actually riddled with squares and it played out in the expected manner. Ultimately the relationship didn't work out - probably because neither one of us is really ready for it and we both did things to pretty much destroy any chance we have of ending up together, at least in this life.
