My thoughts and worksheet on Karma in a composite (you can transfer it to natal as well). I`ve stayed clear of the Draconic composite for now, though the results are mesmerizing, but I am not yet totally clear how to integrate it. And it is quite a lot even with just the tropical chart.

Also I am a sucker for a good story, so I`d rather see or interprete the findings in a chart as a "karmic story", depicting emotional experiences or background, instead of seeing it strictly as an actual past life scenario (it could be quite accurate at times, but more important than the actual past life is the emotional implications that come with it imo. Emotional truth over factual reality. just this once ).

----------------------------------------

WORKSHEET

0. the ROOT
------------
1) IC
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) conjunctions
c) planets in 4th (not conj. cusp)

2) IC-ruler
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunctions

I. The Past
--------------
1) SOUTH NODE
a) sign and degree (poss. Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunct (planets)

2) SOUTH NODE ruler
a) sign and degree (poss. Sabia)
b) house
c) conjunct (planets)

3) 12th house
a) degree and sign (poss. Sabian)
b) conjuncting planets
c) planets in 12th house

4) 12th house ruler
a) degree and sign (Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunct (planets)

---------------------------------

II. The PRESENT

1) ASC
a) degree and sign (Sabian)
b) conjunct planets
c) planets in 1st house (that are not conj.)

2) DESC
a) degree and sign (Sabian)
b) conjunct planets
c) planets in 7th house (not conj. cusp)

III. the FUTURE
-----------------
1) NORTH NODE
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunctions

2) ruler of NORTH NODE
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunctions

3) MEDIUM COELI
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) conjunctions
c) planets in 10th (not conj. cusp)

4) ruler of MC
a) sign and degree (Sabian)
b) house
c) conjunctions

IV. The WAY: "Skipped steps"*
-----------------------------
1) square-point ASC-DESC
2) square-point IC-MC
3) square-point SN - NN
4) asteroid KARMA

* I believe this term was coined by Jeff Green.

I applied this to my natal chart and when doing a little bit of counting was surprised (or not so much) to find that Mars is like a red thread, through all areas:
Root (as ruler of IC)
Past (in 12th house)
Present (conjunct ASC)
Future (conjunct NN)

I also realized that I have two skipped steps:
Venus (IC-MC)
Jupiter (ASC-DESC)

which both are interestingly connected to my "Future" (Ruler of MC and North Node).

I guess that is one more indicator for why I am so attentive to artists (they probably represent my skipped steps as a collective).

[oh btw this worksheet is mine and noone elses. And I donīt want to see it anywhere but here. Just saying. ]

Some explanations:

South Node:
° House:
the "scene of action", what kind of relationship did exist? (in composite)
think of it as a "Noun".
Family-connection. Friendship. Love Affair. Marriage.
or
Home. Foreign country. Jail. etc.

° sign:
how was the connection expressed?
think of it as an "adjective".
Sensual. warm. Fiery. Detached. Mutable. Caring. Intense. etc.

° planets in conjunction:
role of the lifetime.
(not exactly, but almost. I was just thinking of the song).
Anyway the characteristics of the planets will determine the "role" even more.

ruler of SN:
where the planet comes from - CAUSE
where it lands - EFFECT.

Where (house) and how (sign) is the past life theme manifesting today? What energies (conj. planet) influence the expression of the past?
These planets are entwined with past life experiences (my SN ruler is conjunct Sun - so my current identity is a direct effect/ result of the past, I have carried solar energy over).

MC:
it represents the visible result and direction in a worldly sense (so it is clearly different from the north node, which has more of a spiritual connotation).

Skipped steps:
Roadblock and guidance

Definition of skipped steps:

Skipped steps are at the midpoint of an axis (I give an orb of 2 degrees for "acute" cases, but it may work with an orb up to 4-5 degrees), and as such are in the middle of the evolution, from

past (SN) to future (NN)
Self (ASC) to others (DESC)
Root (IC) to Crown (MC)

It is a focal point, that needs to be integrated, so one can really integrate SN and NN in one`s personality. In a way it is a little bit like you need this planet to get to your NN, in this sense it can show you the way to your destiny.
It usually seems to be an unresolved issue from a past life though, something that was unfinished, either because of omission to activate it or because something went wrong in terms of the nature of that planet.
Too much or too little, but somehow the balance was disturbed.
You can`t keep on ignoring it though, it HAS to be worked on (it is a square-point after all).
At the same time it is also the very tool to solve the issue.
It just needs to be addressed (and will be often in relationships, as you might meet people, representing your skipped step), like demonstrated in this article. http://sasstrology.com/2012/02/what-happens-wh en-you-meet-your-skipped-step-repaying-karmic-debts-in-romantic-relationships.html

skipped steps:
a)ASC- DESC-axis (this one often will be near the MC or IC, but not exactly usually):
restoring the balance between the union "for itself" and in the eyes of others (next environment).

b) IC-MC-axis (often near ASC and DESC):
how to anchor the soul and emotional sourche of a union in the worldly sphere, manifesting the soul of a relationship in the outside world

c) SN - NN axis:
as explained above

d) asteroid Karma
this carries experiences from the past and makes it a "lesson" for the present: cause and effect

Wow. Are you my 'spirit' guide, Ceri? I've been encountering some crazy clarity recently, once some of this new 'fog' has cleared.

I'm going to start doing this myself. As to a 'story', uh, well, the series will be out soon. (It's kind of staggering how much of this was later revealed in our charts, synastries, and so on.)

Thanks for this. It's really exciting, and a perfect guideline.

Wow, thx Ceri! You've obviously put a lot of detailed thought into this.

To me you're like the North Star - always pointing the direction.

Good that you explained things in greater detail in your 2nd post 'cause I didn't at first understand "skipped steps."

I still have to do mine, and for the moment have just one question - (which I've had for some time now and hope its not off topic). Re: the concept of Karma, for those students of astrology who don't believe in past lives, how do they integrate their understanding of the SN? I mean is it enough to say that the SN qualities come more easily to us? But why do they come more easily to us ...

Thank you.

Indigo and Linda,

I am glad you could find some use in it.

BTW according to Blashke the 12th house represents the most recent past life(lives),w hile the SN is more of an ongoing soulcontract, a soul-theme being worked out over several past lives.

I find it interesting how my "inner world" (IC and 4th house connections) has a bit of a warzone-feel to it. Well actually with Aries there (hot, dry, east, archetype: warrior or hunter or defender) plus Mars in Sagittarius (ideals, being on a "mission"), it for some reason makes me think of the crusades. lol
Always hated that epoch. Well, disliked.

Anyway funny enough this Mars is conjunct Neptune and NN, which both fall onto the fixed star ANTARES, the "warrior-star", (watche of the west), with my SOUTH node itself being on ALDEBARAN, "wather of the EAST".

Fire signs, esp. Aries, are related to EAST as well (in horary).

Well with Neptune there it is more some kind of "spiritual warrior" I guess.

With Mars being in 12th house though, it is not only indicative of past lives, but probably is pretty subdued nowadays, hidden (4th and 12th are both the most hidden houses in the zodiac), and the neptune takes precedence (as it is in 1wst house). But that doesnīt negate the fact that I have to work out that martian energy. *sighs*

Ceri,

"Well with Neptune there it is more some kind of "spiritual warrior" I guess."

I COMPLETELY relate to this LOL. My Aries Mars makes a 2 deg. aspect with Neptune. Altho I don't have the typical Martian temperament, I never had a problem asserting myself when needed.

I think your thought about this (spiritual warrior) is insightful, even tho people may not find it in standard interps.

"BTW according to Blashke the 12th house represents the most recent past life(lives),w hile the SN is more of an ongoing soulcontract, a soul-theme being worked out over several past lives."

I see. Thanks for making the distinction. Mr. Pisces Moon and I have Moon and Mars resp. at the exact same degree in 12H. I guess that would make it exactly parallel in declination. More proof lol to support my feeling that we knew each "before," separate from everything going on now.

SN are your cumulated (emotional) experiences. if you donīt believe iin past lives, it could also relate to "genetic heritage" or even earliest experiences in this life, or simply describing what behavioural mode is most natural for you.

Not necessarily, though it could be parallel as well. You can check it on astro.com

Whose 12th house is this? or is Moon in your 12th house and Mars in his 12th house,c onjunct each other? Would be very relevant I think.

Wondering about other aspects to the Node - say, a quincunx. Would that have the same/similar effect? For example, I only have two squares to my nodes. One is my MC in Aqua and the other is the name asteroid of my most recent ex (conjunct my MC) He's the one who rejected me. In his chart, he has no squares to his nodes but he has a few quincunxes. One of them is to my name asteroid in his chart. How would this be explained do you think?

Great topic

Sorcha,

well, I focused on the conjunctions because I think these represent the possibility of an actual past life experience together.
The other aspects could denote this as well, especially the square to the nodal axis, but it could also mean "just" an influence of the lifepath.

In the case these also represent past life interactions, I think the quinkunx may be the most difficult to handle, as it is only aspecting one end (I donīt use semisextiles).
There are adjustements necessary, and maybe this one denotes that in the past life there was a conflict, something didn`t fit, but it was probably so subtle that it did not erupt like a square would.
Also due to the incompatibility of element and mode, the quinkunx also represents a hard to define longing, but one that usually leaves you incomplete, especially if it is NOT part of a Yod (with a yod it might be different, as the other quinkunx is some sort of a "counter-weight").
It can be confusing and seriously disbalanced (but not as sharply accentuated as the square), as I said something needs to be adjusted, compromises are necessary, on the other hand there can be a not of true "service" for the others (as the quinkunx relates to the 6th house). It can be quite cathartic in that it also emphasizes the "sacrifice", usually sacrifices one`s Ego-needs and can lead into a true kathartic transformation. But people with that interaspect will never see eye to eye relating to these planets, yet they can learn from each other. The character of "surrender", "transformation", "death" and "sacrifice" can also be seen in the relation of the quinkunx with the 8th house.
The Ego is being sacrificed for the union, but too often it is like a swing, and sometimes one gives and the other takes.
It can be extremely annoying in everyday life, as two people talk in different languages. But of course learning each other`s language gives the chance of real acceptance and expanding one`s horizon.
It depends if people will meet that challenge though.

I actually like the description of cafe astrology

"Olive. Your love signs are inconjunct, or in signs that are inconjunct to each other. This combination is similar to the semi-sextile (Beige) combination, but more insistent and binding. The chemistry is either present and powerful or not there at all. It's more likely to be present but not felt until some later date when circumstances call it out! Sometimes this points to an on-again, off-again relationship. Often enough, one of you (or both) were "on the rebound" when you started your relationship. Why? Because you are an odd combination of people who don't really understand each other's needs in love. You make an unlikely couple in many ways, but if you do get thrown into each other's arms--whether it's by unusual circumstances or due to other, more direct combinations of planets and points--you could easily stick it out for the long haul. Plenty of adjustments are required in order to make this relationship work, but if you are willing to make them, more power to you. The viability of this combination depends very much on your individual characters. If you value peace and harmony, you probably should look elsewhere! If the idea of peace and harmony makes you think "how dull!", this budding, complex, and fascinating relationship may be just right for you!
Yin-Yang combinations: Of the scenarios described here, this is more apt to be a situation in which the chemistry does exist. And, especially with the Venus-Mars and Eros-Psyche combinations, there's a real tendency to want to keep trying and "adjusting" to one another.

Yin-Yin or Yang-Yang combinations: Of the scenarios described above, this one is less likely to indicate powerful chemistry. If you are together, it's unlikely due to this aspect alone. Plenty of adjustments are needed in order to make this relationship work. This can be exciting and interesting, or just plain annoying and stressful, depending on your individual personalities."
http://www.cafeastrology.com/articles/signcompatiblitygrid.html

I have natally an exact quinkunx of Moon and Saturn, and the one sentence that always comes too mind with this one is: "It`s never enough."
But it is not a challenge like with the square that gives spark and energy as well, it is that nagging feeling underneath.

Jeff Green gives some guideline how to determine if two people have a karmic past:

° A planet conjuncts or aspects B`s SOUTH Node, or the SN RULER

° A`s NODAL axis aspercts B`s NODAL axis

° both SN`RULERS aspect each other

° A`s planet conjuncts B`s NORTH NODE or its RULER, but only if this planet is
a) aspecting SN ruler of B
b) opposing a planet, which is conjunct B`s SOUTH NODE

° NORTH NODE RULER of A aspects SOUTH NODE RULER of B
(this is indicative of a relatively new soul-relationship, which has started just a few lives ago)

° (Pluto aspecting personal planets)

I still think the 12th house has an influence also, but I found this guideline interesting

EDIT:
Personally I think one of the strongest clues is, if one person`s 12th house planet, 12th house ruler, SOUTH NODE or SOUTH NODE-ruler is conjunct the other one`s ASCENDANT (as this indicates the entry into this incarnation)

The other "dramatic" occurence would be if, there was a Double Whammy of KARMIC MARKERS with angles, planets or especially houserulers, as this would be very indicative of the actual dynamic between two people.

Example:
His 12th house ruler conjunct her 7th house ruler
her 12th house ruler conjunct his 7th house ruler

I would place my bet on them having been married or in a committed relationship in their last past lifeline together. Or at least that dynamic would be strong.

Though I place most emphasis on conjunctions, the other aspects might be important as well.

Squares might represent karmic storylines that werenīt or could not be finished, yet the intensity had been increased a notch.

First, I want to say thank you for even more additional and valuable info.

So I checked on astro declinations. Thx for correcting me. Turns out that my 12H Mars (Aries) is at 2 deg N and his 12H Moon (Pisces) is at 3 deg S. So this would be an opposition, right? In our natals, my 12H Mars is at 9 Aries and his 12H Moon is at 9 Pisces. Is there still a past life significance with just these aspects?

Also, in natals, his Mars squares my Moon exact. So along with the above opposition, we have a Moon/Mars DW.

What is also interesting is that in declinations my Mean Node and True Node are both at 3 deg N. This means that his Moon at 3 deg S is conjunct my SN!! In natals my Moon is conjunct his SN by 2 deg. So would it be correct to say we have a DW with Moon conjunct SN?

And of course my own 12H Mars, at 2 deg N declination, is conjunct my NN at 3 deg N (decl.) So maybe I was a "spiritual warrior" in a recent past life/lives and I'm carrying it over into this life as well?

And since I was looking it up anyways, I checked (for the VERY first time), our composite in declinations. I don't want to go off topic at all here but OMG, just thought I'd mention to you this -

We have Sun, Venus, Mercury, IC, and PF, ALL at 23 N (decl.) and Mars at 22 N (decl.)

You can correct me on this but if IC is kinda, sorta, like Moon (to a lesser degree)- (it's in Cancer in the composite), then going by the above, it's like having Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and PF all conjunct in the composite!!!

What sayeth you, my dear Ceri? Oh and real quick - hope you're feeling much better today and have beaten the cold

Ceri,

That makes a lot of sense to me. He has quite a few inconjuncts in his chart and he is, in general, a very quincunxy type of person. So it makes sense to me that
this energy would be found in our synastry and that his NN quincunxes my no whereas my NN squares his name.

I tend to focus on conjunctions too, in general, and with a tough orb. We have a lot of karmic indicators in our charts, both composite and in synastry. I think that we tried our best to make it work but in the end he gave up. Maybe he was the smart one in this case.

Linda,

"So this would be an opposition, right?"
I am not really considering parallels/ contraparallels, or at least not like aspects, as there are only about 46 degree possible (on the eccliptic) as compared to 360° in the zodiac, parallels/ contraprallels will happen a lot more frequently.

Where it becomes very significant is though, if there is a wide aspect and additionally the planets are parallel or contraparallel within one degree. Explains why sometimes a 8 degree conjunction seems to be felt and why at other times it fails.

"In our natals, my 12H Mars is at 9 Aries and his 12H Moon is at 9 Pisces."
Your Mars and his Moon might have significance in terms of past lives, yes, but there needs to be confirmation in other aspects. The ruler of 12th house would have precedence over these.

"Also, in natals, his Mars squares my Moon exact. So along with the above opposition, we have a Moon/Mars DW."
If your Mars is on 9 Aries and his Moon on 9 Pisces you do not have an opposition. I know they say to interprete a contraparallel LIKE an opposition, but that is just a tool to make it easier. An opposition is an longitudinal aspect, a contraparallel relates to the declination.

"So would it be correct to say we have a DW with Moon conjunct SN?"
No (though other astrologers might disagree with me here). But it is simply two different coordinates - longitudes vs declinations.

it might have significance, but I would rate it way down the list, as these aspects happen so often. (at least compared to longitudinal conjunctions and oppositions).

It is not insignificant, but just more subtle.

Thanks Ceri, for explaining the difference between declinations and aspects. I understand better now. On the web whenever I read about declinations I always understood them to be comparable to conjunctions and oppositions. But I see the subtlety from your explanation.

Dat's why I like to get it straight from ya!! Otherwise web info can be soo misleading sometimes.

Hope yor feeling bettah today!
