all we have are hypothesis~ it could have happened many times over already, and it still hasn't. lol
there are a lot of other ideas out there for why it is shrinking, and what may or may not happen in its future. we just don't know until it does.
as for effects - I wouldn't worry about that so much... cross that bridge when and if you actually reach it... everyone has stars in their chart, more than most people even realize... >.< *shame too*
stars have energies similar to planets and aspects, and combinations of planet-planet, and actual aspect energies on their own. stars in astrology originally began as a method of illustrating stories (mythology-creation myths) and as with our sun and moon, a method to tell time... later becoming tools for prediction... and later still, being used to interpret hidden messages from gods/divinition, and in early astrology... the use for astrology (in the Western world in particular) didn't really pick up until the dark ages... at which point a lot of negativity was attached to them, which is still being sorted out today (by those in the Western world)... whereas stars in other cultures have maintained their dignity far better, but finding, English, descriptions and relating those to outside systems doesn't always work out well...
like Ami said, Betelgeuse, like planets have positive and not so positive gifts they can reflect into your chart where they are, but it all comes down to how you apply their benefits, and (IMO) heavily dependent on transits... in this case you have a very strong MC, I would say... and with Jupiter transiting, the time it crosses your MC may bring you some huge opportunities/luck/profit. Depending on your Saturn placement and transit Saturn, this can lead to new business opportunities, job changes/promotions, (even in the student realm, receiving loans and honours etc...). The two planetary energies present within Betelgeuse will be bQ at some point during tSaturn, and tJupiters journey right around the time tJupiter converges on your MC... they can push you to a great height, or test your limits... how much you can handle, and how you handle it will determine the benefit... but the potential is there... ^^
stars are more predictive, historically, traditionally.
don't worry about him disappearing so much though... ^^;
