I found this on a facebook page of one of my favorite authors, along with a picture...its about the word Ubuntu, meaning "I am, because we are"...
Ubuntu(202373)
I wonder if it plays out as meaningful in synastry?

The picture and story is so sweet!
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151265617426851&set=pb.188622516850.-2207520000.1380213870.&type=3&theater

Heres the quoted story....
"An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: ''UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?''
'UBUNTU' in the Xhosa culture means: "I am because we are""

Don't know about the rest for now, but my Ubuntu at 23.07 R Aquarius possibly has some part to play in my often noticing men with their Suns at 22-23 Aquarius.

When my mother died, transiting Ubuntu was at 26.09 Tau and exactly on my SN. My mother's NN is 21.47 Aquarius, too, and my grandmother's Sun and Moon are 22 Leo opposite my Ubuntu likewise. Her Ubuntu is 25.50 R Pisces trine my mother's Sun and square her first, mistreating husband's Ubuntu at 27.26 Gemini. My mother's Ubuntu was 18.04 Virgo, a bit over a degree from my Mercury. My NN trines my grandmother's Ubuntu, and my brother's Ubuntu trines our grandfather's NN.

On the paternal side it's Ubuntu at 8.41 Cancer (square my Pluto and his own Neptune). My brother's Ubuntu is 2.02 Virgo, over a degree opposite my Moon. Brother's 3-month-old son has his Ubuntu at 1.35 Gem on his DC. We're not a particularly close family per se, so it's likely to be expected as well.

My paternal grandfather's Ubuntu is 23.49 Aries conjunct my Jupiter and the father's Venus, and the grandfather's NN is 10.18 Cancer to match my father's Ubuntu and mirror me and my mother's Ub-NN pattern. My paternal grandmother's Ubuntu is 17.21 Tau, but I don't currently have the charts of their three other children to compare with all that. Her husband's Mars was 19.15 Tau though.

Vesta, for keeping the home fires burning??

Mother's Vesta 25.17 Virgo, opp her mother's Ubuntu, trine my SN. Kaali I don't see the relevance of here, but hers is still 17.05 Gem so square her Ubuntu. DNA 0.44 Gem.

My father has Vesta conj MC (like me) at 28 Aqu, opposite my Sun and brother's Saturn-Venus. DNA 27.47 R Virgo.
His Karma 22.23 Gem conj his 23.42 NN. NN-Karma is trine my Ubuntu then, same as my Karma at 26.55 Leo is LOOSELY trine my paternal grandfather's Ubuntu in Aries and our Ubuntus sextile. Father's father also has his Vesta at 7.56 Can conjunct my father's Ubuntu.

Brother has DNA (conj Merc-MC) at 13 Leo conj our mother's ASC. Karma 9.27 Tau, NN 29.18 Virgo (Antiscion 0 Aries conj my Vesta).

His son has Karma 26.46 Virgo. Kaali 29.43 R Scorpio, conjunct his MC (Ubuntu was opposite in Gem). "Coincidentally", kid has his DC at 8.59 Cancer conjunct his grandfather's Ubuntu. I don't have the charts for my brother's daughters so can't compare there.

Mother's mother has Vesta at 25.02 Aries. Her first husband's Sun is 26.01 Ari (trine my Karma). Her Vesta is also square her daughter's Sun, Karma at 2.18 R Aries conj my MC + 2 deg conj my Vesta. Note the Antiscion for 2 Aries, 27 Virgo. Kaali 0.51 R Capricorn.

I know there are links of different sorts with Angel (mother's 1.00 R Cap, trine bro's Ubuntu, conj my Drac Karma-Sun) and more, too, but it's tedious to list everything.

It may still be worth noting that as said, we weren't any particularly close family in contact all the time or emotionally demonstrative or whatever. It's more about blood, or the ancestral or family lineage style ties at crisscross work as usual, the way most things go if I look at the family patterns. If it's "I am because we are"" then I or others in the family exist because others did before, more so. The nodal contacts with Ubuntu probably lean in similar directions.

I see with yours and mine there is alot of contact with this asteroid...can't wait to do more research!

I'd check Hestia for more hearth or home stuff perhaps, if you suggest Vesta (and it offers preliminary hits at my end at least). Mine was 12.21 Leo, so conjunct my mother's ASC and brother's MC, trine father's Sun-Moon.

Mother's Hestia is also at 24.32 Virgo, so near the earlier (trine my SN, ~5 degrees from brother's NN). Father's Hestia 28.43 Pisces (conj brother's SN, trine my NN). Brother's Hestia 10.54 Tau. His son's 20.10 Scorpio (~3 degrees trine brother's Sun).

I also figured that with brother's ASC at 27.27 Libra, our father's Vesta-MC trines that as well. There's also 280 Philia which I consider personally important (mine on my ASC, 6 Leo). My brother's Philia is 23.11 R Aquarius conjunct my Ubuntu.
Father's Philia 10.31 R Libra opp his Sun-Moon and square his 8.41 Can Ubuntu.
Mother's Philia at 18.19 R Sag (T-square opp Kaali square Ubuntu) conj my Vertex.

Mother's mother Philia 3.13 R Aries (conj my MC). The Antiscion is 26 Virgo, so it ties to the Vesta-Hestia-Ubuntu aspects there.
Mother's father Philia 16.40 Can conj his 17.29 Pluto and my brother's Jupiter-Sun.

Mother's mother Hestia 7.31 Libra. Mother's father 11.11 Aries.
Father's father Hestia 28.42 R Pisces. Father's mother 5.52 R Cap.

Good luck researching. I doubt mine here will help that excessively, but they're there for now.

Sweet story!

I just checked the composite with a guy, who has an unbelievable uplifting influence on me. NO clue why.

Anyway, in the composite we have an exact conjunction of Sun and UBUNTU on 26 Sagittarius.

Ceridwen,

you prompted me to check some composites, and an old classmate of mine whom I recently ran into again after some 20+ years seems to get composite Angel at 26.39 R Sag conjunct the IC. Ubuntu at 26.30 R Aquarius opposite my natal Karma, comp Angel trine that.

I had a minor crush on him back in the day, but he wasn't very talkative back then. Now that we ran into each other again (through a course) he had a new girlfriend, but with his having opened up to who he is a bit more, we were regularly chatting away for an extra hour after the day's schedule, and getting on very well. Much better than me and another old classmate I also ran into again, even if with her being female there was more existing contact from before.

My parents have comp Ubuntu conj Pluto at 13.22-14.57 Leo.
Square Moon at 13.26 Tau.
Comp. Vesta at 11.50 Sag.

Brother and his son have comp Ubuntu-Sun-Karma at 16.48-17.49-18.07 Cancer. Both had Sun at 17 Cancer in any case, same as his older daughter. Bro + son's comp Angel-Moon 23-24 Leo is opposite my brother's natal Ubuntu.
Comp Vesta 4.39 Libra conj 6.40 MC. Hestia at 15.32 Aquarius near brother's natal DC.

Brother and our father's comp Ubuntu at 5 Leo conj my ASC. Me + mother's comp Ubuntu 5.35 Sag.

My and our father's comp ASC 26 Can conjunct my mother's Sun. I also see a lot explaining other things with the 12H comp Saturn-Chiron-Jupiter-Karma at 22-24 Can right before all that and Sun, Merc, Mars and Venus all in 12th house likewise. Comp Ubuntu 0.54 R Tau trine my brother's Ubuntu. Comp Pluto 8.34 Vir conj cNN 9.50, both conj my 8 Virgo Kaali. Don't try this at home, kids. Comp Kaali 2.34 Libra on my IC, Lucifer 6.35 Can so near his natal Ubuntu.

The whole family's multicomposite with 4 people has Ubuntu at 5.28 Can conj Jupiter 5.44 and Sun 5.55 Can. Vesta 8.06 R Cap.
Hestia 26.38 Gem.
NN 25.11 Libra.
ASC 23.34 Leo and MC 29.17 Aries.

Sure, I'll take a look at it for you. Would it show up in family synastry, then?

Synastry with my parents:
- My dad loosely conj. his Moon (if 5 degrees isn't too wide), which sextiles my Sun.
- My mum's doesn't do anything other than a quincunx to Venus. But it's trine my Uranus and sextile my Jupiter. A loose conjunction to my Mars, too.

I definitely feel the "I can't be happy when you're not" feeling with my mother. She's great.

On a possible career-note... My 202373 Ubuntu shows up at 17 Vir 10'48" along with my Industria, and 2.5 degrees from my Midheaven. Somehow appropriate as I work in IT right now and Ubuntu is the name of a popular Linux OS (although I deal with Microsoft/ASP.NET stuff at work). Not that I haven't dabbled with Linux in the past.

Would be interesting to see where this asteroid is in Linus Torvalds' chart.

Since the essence of Ubuntu is "sharing" it would make sense that open source software would have its name.

I think that in a natal astrology chart asteroid (202373) Ubuntu would indicate what we have to share to the world, or in synastry, what we have to share in relationships.

If there is a harsh aspect (square, opposition, or even conjunction) I think there would be caution in sharing with others whatever the essence of the planet location represents that Ubuntu touches in the natal chart.

With trine or sextile there would be no hesitation in sharing.

---

Great story - do you think that in abstract terms the fruit represents knowledge - the sharing of knowledge or information - like in the creation stories?

In this case Ubuntu in astrology would represent the sharing of information about the planets that it touches in your chart.

Would love to hear comments on personal experience with this interpretation.

Thank you for your link Mirage, i wanted to copy some of it i thought was interesting and maybe show aspects of the asteroid for interpretation...

"According to Michael Onyebuchi Eze, the core of ubuntu can best be summarized as follows: “A person is a person through other people strikes an affirmation of one’s humanity through recognition of an ‘other’ in his or her uniqueness and difference. It is a demand for a creative intersubjective formation in which the ‘other’ becomes a mirror (but only a mirror) for my subjectivity. This idealism suggests to us that humanity is not embedded in my person solely as an individual; my humanity is co-substantively bestowed upon the other and me. Humanity is a quality we owe to each other. We create each other and need to sustain this otherness creation. And if we belong to each other, we participate in our creations: we are because you are, and since you are, definitely I am. The ‘I am’ is not a rigid subject, but a dynamic self-constitution dependent on this otherness creation of relation and distance”.[6]

An "extroverted communities" aspect is the most visible part of this ideology. There is sincere warmth with which people treat both strangers and members of the community. This overt display of warmth is not merely aesthetic but enables formation of spontaneous communities (co-operatives if you will). The resultant collaborative work within these spontaneous communities transcends the aesthetic and gives functional significance to the value of warmth. How else are you to ask for sugar from your neighbour? Warmth is not the sine qua non of community formation but guards against instrumentalist relationships. Unfortunately, sincere warmth may leave one vulnerable to those with ulterior motives."

Ubuntu: "I am what I am because of who we all are." (From a definition offered by Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee.)

Archbishop Desmond Tutu offered a definition in a 1999 book:
A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, based from a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

Tutu further explained Ubuntu in 2008:
One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.

Nelson Mandela explained Ubuntu as follows:
A traveller through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food and attend him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu, but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve?

Tim Jackson refers to Ubuntu as a philosophy that supports the changes he says are necessary to create a future that is economically and environmentally sustainable

Judge Colin Lamont expanded on the definition during his ruling on the hate speech trial of Julius Malema:
Ubuntu is recognised as being an important source of law within the context of strained or broken relationships amongst individuals or communities and as an aid for providing remedies which contribute towards more mutually acceptable remedies for the parties in such cases.
Ubuntu is a concept which:

1. is to be contrasted with vengeance
2. dictates that a high value be placed on the life of a human being
3. is inextricably linked to the values of and which places a high premium on dignity, compassion, humaneness and respect for humanity of another
4. dictates a shift from confrontation to mediation and conciliation
5. dictates good attitudes and shared concern
6. favours the re-establishment of harmony in the relationship between parties and that such harmony should restore the dignity of the plaintiff without ruining the defendant
7. favours restorative rather than retributive justice
8. operates in a direction favouring reconciliation rather than estrangement of disputants
9. works towards sensitising a disputant or a defendant in litigation to the hurtful impact of his actions to the other party and towards changing such conduct rather than merely punishing the disputant
10. promotes mutual understanding rather than punishment
11. favours face-to-face encounters of disputants with a view to facilitating differences being resolved rather than conflict and victory for the most powerful
12. favours civility and civilised dialogue premised on mutual tolerance

I see Ubuntu as the energy that has best lost more in Western society with the attitude, "Ive got mine"!
Indicating im ok so who cares about anyone else, to me this exact opposite of Ubuntu, someone with Ubuntu attitude would be saying, "What ive got, i share because we are all in this together" helping others is helping yourself!
I think the way you could interpret in a chart is the soft aspects and conjunctions are areas that easily allow this energy to flow but what squares it are places that block you from feeling the desire to see yourself as part of a unit, and make you feel alone, separated or shut out by others lending to the need to get all you can get and not think of others.
