I read somewhere that only hard aspects should be used for synastry charts.

Then I also read that quincux should be used. For asteroids do we only look for conjunctions?

Conjunctions are the strongest, for sure. With other aspects, I would allow 2 degrees, tops. With conjunctions, I would allow 3 but people differ on this.
