Apatheia (Greek: ἀπάθεια; from a- "without" and pathos "suffering" or "passion") in Stoic philosophy refers to a state of mind where one is not disturbed by the passions. It is best translated by the word equanimity rather than indifference. The word apatheia has a quite different meaning to the modern English apathy, which has a negative connotation. According to the Stoics, apatheia was the quality that characterized the sage.Whereas Aristotle had claimed that virtue was to be found in the golden mean between excess and deficiency of emotion (metriopatheia), the Stoics sought freedom from all passions (apatheia). It meant eradicating the tendency to react emotionally or egotistically to external events – the things we cannot control. For the Stoics, it was the optimum rational response to the world, for we cannot control things that are caused by the will of others or by Nature; we can only control our own will. This did not mean a loss of feeling, or total disengagement from the world. The Stoic who performs correct (virtuous) judgments and actions as part of the world-order experiences contentment (eudaimonia) and good feelings (eupatheia). Pain is slight if opinion has added nothing to it; ... in thinking it slight, you will make it slight. Everything depends on opinion; ambition, luxury, greed, hark back to opinion. It is according to opinion that we suffer. ... So let us also win the way to victory in all our struggles, – for the reward is ... virtue, steadfastness of soul, and a peace that is won for all time. — Seneca, Wikisource-logo.svg Epistles, lxxviii. 13–16 The Pyrrhonian skeptics also sought the eradication of feelings when disturbance depends on belief, but allowed for only a moderation of feeling when based on sensations such as pain. The term was later adopted by Plotinus in his development of Neoplatonism, in which apatheia was the soul's freedom from emotion achieved when it reaches its purified state. The term passed into early Christian teaching, whereby apatheia meant freedom from unruly urges or compulsions. It is still used in this sense in Orthodox monasticism. .................................... I have it conjunct my AC, where is in your chart? IP: Logged |

My bf's Apatheia is also conjunct his ascendant. Explains a lot. Excellent control of his emotions - very good at compartmentalising, so when it comes to work or other aspects of his life, he can attend to these undisturbed.By the same measure, I would probably have it opposite my ascendant or a luminary. Will go check! Edit: surprised to find it exactly sextile my Moon. How would this indicate that I have poor control? IP: Logged |

I love Stoic Philosophy, Its great you are teaching it to your pupils . I am sure you are reaching them trust me. Sometimes you teach things in here that I am not ready to learn but then I file it in my brain and go back to it later and BAM! it all starts to sync in. IP: Logged |

Sometimes we want to respond to the fist paragraph of something read only to discover the second paragraph covers that. To me not giving a phluk is 'as exactly the same as not being affected by, they just sound different From time to time there has been someone who has said to me," You just don't give a phluk"' It has always been the case that I was not invested in matters which I could not alter. Why waste energy? Its like being offended by what others do. Something we should all avoid in my opinion. In fact I endeavor in that direction AND FIND MY SELF poor. Geocentically this asteroid a full 2 degrees off my asc(birth time?) and in Helio conjunct both geo/helio Neptune(09sc) which is my most dom planet, and ITS(Apatheia> node(H) is Saturns H node (1 degree) and My Saturn sits there as well. I have been called stoic at young age and had to go home and look up the word! Nice post,, Hypatia, TY,TY,TYVM

You are Very Welcome! Your anecdote about you as a child being called Stoic and having to look up the word was cute.It makes me so happy to see that you guys have enjoyed this thread. Stoic philosophy I feel compliments nicely Buddhist ideals. IP: Logged |

^ I am learning stoicism by practicing what I learned from Eckhart Tolle a few years ago, when my pr Apatheia was applying to a conjunction with pr sun. I picked up The Power of Now when those two were about 3 degrees from conjunction. Tolle isn't Buddhist but he secularizes the Buddhist teaching of non-attachment. Which has been SO beneficial for my life. I suspected this asteroid would show up in a big way, in my chart. Glad it did. TY, TYVM from me too IP: Logged |

My Apatheia is in my 6th house Capricorn, ironically squared my Aries MH.I've always been a very stoic person(and indifferent) which simply actually hides the emotions buried deep in me. I'm the kind of guy who could bury himself in his work for hours and then look up and say "Oh, I didn't notice you there" IP: Logged |
