Hiya, I thought I'd just mention my current feelings on toothpaste.

I recently switched over to herbal toothpaste, and MAN, what a difference it made! My teeth are stronger, cleaner..

That, and I'm not afraid of dying of fluoridosis anymore

I want to see what other people think. Yeah, I know I'm paying a lot more, but I mean.. At least I'm no longer afraid to brush my teeth.

Yep, I'm with you, switched about 1.5 year ago, I couldn't stand fluorine any more, much healthier with Kingfisher or Ayurvedic toothpastes.

The brand I'm currently using is called "Nature's Gate". I imagine you can find it in health food stores. I've been told that the ones with tea-tree oil work the best, but they're much more expensive. Oh, and the ones that don't give the ingredients, and say they're made by a chemical company?... Stay away from them

Compliments of Purple Leprechaun:

I found a really good Web site on water fluoridation, which I am completely against (fluoridation, not the Web site )... Anyway, here's some info I wanted to share with everyone. The site is at www.nofluoride.com ... here's some stuff from the site:
Summary of Key Studies

The Pasteur Institute and the Nobel Institute oppose fluoridation.
They have caused fluoride to be banned in their countries, France and Sweden, respectively.

JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) links hip fractures and fluoridation.
Reports published in 1990, 1992, and 1992 stated that there was a link between hip fractures in the elderly and water fluoridated at 1 ppm (the so-called "optimal dose").

JADA (Journal of the American Dental Association) admits the often stated "optimal" intake level of 1 ppm (part per million) has yet to be determined scientifically.

AMA (American Medical Association) refuses to say that fluoridation is harmless and "has not carried out any research work, either long term or short term, regarding the possibility of any side effects." - Assistant Director of AMA

JADA (Journal of the American Dental Association) - states dentists make 17% more PROFIT in fluoridated areas as opposed to non-fluoridated areas. 1972, 84;355-367

California Dept of Health Services - Dental costs are higher in fluoridated communities.

Fluoridation is approved by voters by less than 25%.
Procter & Gamble, the makers of Crest toothpase state, "In 1980, 41 fluoridation referenda were held in the United States; fluoridation was disapproved in 33 of these and approved in only 8."

Sodium Fluoride contains Arsenic & Lead
According to an Allied Chemical Data Sheet sent to cities interested in fluoridating their water supplies.

EPA lists fluoride as a contaminant.

International Acadamey of Oral Medicine and Toxicology - has classified fluoride as un unapproved dental medicament due to its high toxicity.

EPA Scientists Take Stand Against Fluoridation
July 1997. The EPA scientists, engineers and attorneys who assess the scientific data for Safe Drinking Water Act standards and other EPA regulations have gone on record against the practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water.

FDA - considers fluoride an unapproved drug for which there is no proof of safety or effectiveness.

Former NIH (National Inst. of Health) scientist opposed to fluoride
Dr. Patrick, Harvard Ph.D., states Fluoride is capable of a very wide variety of harmful effects, even at low doses.

Significant increase in bone cancer
A 1992 N.J. Dept. of Health study indicated a significant increase in osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in young men who drank fluoridated water.

Three year old child dies due to fluoride treatment.
$750,000 was awarded a family in New York for the fluoride-related death.

"A significant increase in cancer mortality in the fluoridated cities" a 28 year study concludes.
A time-trend study of Dr. Burk and Dr. Yiamouyiannis, which compared cancer mortality in ten cities which fluoridated their water systems with ten cities which did not fluoridate.

Houston sued over fluoridation - and loses based on scientific data.
Court rules "That the artificial fluoridation of public water supplies, such as is contemplated by [Houston] City Ordinance No. 80-2530, may cause or may contribute to the cause of cancer, genetic damage, intolerant reactions, and chronic toxicity, including dental mottling, in man; that the said artificial fluoridation may aggravate malnutrition and existing illnesses in man; and that the value of said artificial fluoridation is in doubt as to the reduction of tooth decay in man."

Why have 80 cities rejected fluoridation since 1996? What do they know?

City warns residents about Fluoridated water
Natick Mass. - March 1998 When people open their next town water bills, they will notice a warning about fluoridation. The town recommends pregnant women, parents of children under 3, and people sensitive to fluoride consult their doctors.

ADA (American Dental Association) study suggests too much Toothpaste Causes Fluorosis.
A study published in the December Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) shows that children who use too much toothpaste are at a significant risk for dental Fluorosis.

Judge reinstates EPA scientist who recommends ELIMINATING FLUORIDE from water supplies.
Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has ordered the reinstatement of Dr. William Marcus, a Senior Toxicologist with the EPA, who was fired by the Environmental Protection Agency after he opposed the use of fluoride in drinking water.

Mr. Reich ratified a Dec. 3, 1992, ruling by Judge David Clarke that the EPA “retaliated” against Dr. Marcus by firing him in May 1992 for his scientific reports which recommended removing fluoride from drinking water. Fluoride, Dr. Marcus said in an interview Friday, is “a poison” found to cause liver cancer and other health problems. It also causes lead to leach from plumbing into water supplies, he said.

EPA and Surgeon General accused of falsifying data on fluoride.
In 1991, the National Federation of Federal Employees representing the scientists lawyers and engineers at EPA Headquarters charged the EPA and Surgeon General's office with falsifying information relating to the risks of fluoride and unequivocally renounced the use of fluoride as a safe practice.

Santa Cruz rejects Fluoridation
The Santa Cruz citizens voted to ban fluoridation on March 2, 1999.

Floridation loses when it is put to a public vote.
As stated by the ADA (American Dental Association)

Crest Toothpaste states sociopolitical aspects of water fluoridation must be considered.
Crest Toothpaste (Procter & Gamble) states "the reasons of fluoridation is rejection by communities is due to: failure to effectively educate the public on the scientific and sociopolitical aspects of water fluoridation, & failure of health professionals to treat the situation as a 'political' campaign."

Fluorine is a very reactive element, and if you have mercury fillings, I guess it's very active on them (and on your gums and teeth for that matter)... I had the same feeling with sugar-free chewing-gum, as if it dissolved my fillings.
