I have a question for you guys. I work in an office all week, so my only time to get a tan is on the weekends, which are often busy. So I was using self tanner once a week, dark stuff I would leave on for 5-6 hours and it would be me noticebly tanner and I really liked it. Almost at the same time, I wondered if the skin was absorbing the chemicals and if this could be bad for me, as when a coworker mentioned it couldn't be good to put on so much. So I haven't used it since. I would love to hear everybody's input or links to any research that may (hopefully!) have been done about this. I would just stop and never use it again, but it's just I am half Mexican and Italian and rather pale and look so much better tan!!! But I felt the need to check before I continued religiously slathering this stuff all over me once a week. THANKS!------------------ Food is the only art that nourishes! IP: Logged |

Well, since the skin is the largest organ on your body, and it is a very effective transport system, I would venture to say that it is absorbed into your body. On how much damage is being done, would depend on what ingredients are in the product. Not all self-tanners are created the same.------------------ Hugs,LTD ~~The struggle keeps us young~~Daring to make mistakes and knowing there are none.~~DGM IP: Logged |

I would think that flushing the body with lots of water would help reverse the toxicity. So drink lots and lots of water. I would imagine that using the tanner in moderation would not hurt, but avoid excessive amounts, as the skin needs to "breathe" in order to function properly.------------------ Hugs,LTD ~~The struggle keeps us young~~Daring to make mistakes and knowing there are none.~~DGM IP: Logged |

Do you think once a month, leaving it on for 5 hours and then washing it off, would be bad? Are you OK in New Orleans????? Hope so!!!------------------ Food is the only art that nourishes! IP: Logged |

Personally, I don't think that Self tanners can cause any harm to the body since the skin can't actually absorb the things we put on it. We would swell like sponges every time we had a bath if that was the case The only thing that the self tanner does is it changes the colour of the outer layer of skin which are actually 'dead' skin cells so I don't see how it can be harmfull, unless there is some ingredient in it that irritates the skin. Yes, the skin is an organ for elimination but it can't absorb those chemicals found in self tanners or any of the things we put on it (I mean the things we can buy without perscription) because the molecules are just too large to go beyond the surface of the skin.------------------ Sorry looks down, Worry looks around, Faith looks up. Hi everyone Hmmm, that is an interesting thing you mention, chocoholic (love the name, me too!!). You are right that the skin doesn't absorb everything (like a bath ), but I did hear that if you put a garlic clove between your toes, that within a few hours you would be able to taste it. So I would assume some things may be able to be absorbed through the skin. Hmmmm. I've never tried this though! Peace, Pearly IP: Logged |

Well, what you are saying I think, could be because the garlic has a really STRONG smell (which I personally love), and being so strong, again, those dead skin cells are the only ones affected. Try scrubing it and see if it smells then! By the way, Fajita, which Self Tan are you using? And how often do you apply it to your skin? ------------------ Sorry looks down, Worry looks around, Faith looks up. IP: Logged |

Hi! I was using the Estee Lauder "go bronze" in dark once a week, until about a month ago I stopped because I began to wonder if it was bad. I would like to use it again once in a while. I mean it certainly won't last that long, but, while it lasts, it looks great :-)------------------ Food is the only art that nourishes! IP: Logged |

Chocoholic.....I beg to differ....the skin is the largest organ on your body....it has a very fine transfer system, that allows drugs and chemicals to move from the outside to the inside. The reason that we don't swell like sponges when we take a bath, is that the body has a very well regulated fluid balance....regulated by the skin, the brain, the respiratory system, the hormonal systems of the body. You can get a teeny amount of a chemical on your body and actually taste it in your mouth!!! This is why chemical warfare is so dangerous. Not only do we have to protect our respiratory system, but we have to protect our skin, in the event of an attack. A small amount of atropine on your hands can affect your blood pressure, your heart, make your mouth dry, dry your eyes, make you dizzy and the list goes on.Yes, the skin has an outer layer of dead cells, but you are forgetting the pores of the skin....our skin is not like a solid sheet of plastic. It is very very porous regardless of how many dead cells are present. And yes, you can taste the garlic NOT just smell it. The skin is a powerful organ. Fajita......I think once a month would be okay, but drink lots of water while doing it and for several days after. ------------------ Hugs,LTD ~~The struggle keeps us young~~Daring to make mistakes and knowing there are none.~~DGM IP: Logged |
