I'm trying to find information on taking saunas.

I've already visited some great Finnish sites: http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/english/sauna.html http://www.saunasite.com/index-en/engindex.htm

Problem is, the only sauna I have access to is at my gym, and it's a dry sauna with electric stones-- you have to shower before and after, and you can't throw water on the stones because it's an electical hazard! I've seen this "dry" sauna in apartment building gyms, too. The temperature is kept at about 80F or 27C, and the users sweat more than they steam. These sound _nothing_ like the ones in Scandinavia, with their steam benefits.

Is this kind of sauna healthy? Is it really helping get out toxins? Or am I just drying out my eyes and body in an overheated cedar closet? I wonder.

Hey Lunargirl Yea, those cedar or redwood saunas are good for you. Heat treatment generally is. It stimulates circulation and your immune system and helps sweat out toxins. I have been in the electric stone heated ones and actually have poured water over the stones... some manufacturers make them safer than others. The cedar or redwood has a disinfecting quality and rejects fungus or mold so the environment is pretty healthy... important if it's at a public gym! 80 degrees sounds cold though! I would at least need 100-110...

Yeah, well, those Scandinavian ones have always sounded lovely to me. I go to a day spa that has the *best* steam rooms, so that is the only place I go for heat treatment. I wish I could have my own...

One last thing... in the dry saunas you can take a spring water spritzer in with you and maybe add a few drops of eucalyptus or other essential oil to it. You can spritz that on during the treatment... it'll keep you in there longer!

I can't take in scented stuff with me (my gym has a policy against it-- some people are allergic, etc.) -- but a spritzer of spring water would be a heavenly addition! Great idea!

And I think I might try a little water on the rocks, too. I emailed a sauna person recently and also got a reply saying that technically it was safe to throw water on all sauna electric stone heaters-- they're manufactured for that. Before I do, however, I'll probably have a chat with the gym staff about the issue; we have a great relationship and quite possibly can work out a solution together.

Oh and I was totally wrong about the temp!!! How about 80C and 170F... or something like that... very hot, but no worries about getting cooked!! I checked after reading your comment.
