I would be interested to hear what you all have to say about diet soda? Do you drink it? Sometimes I do. I know there are lots of cancer theories about aspartame, but I guess the fact that I smoke cigarettes makes me figure some diet soda won't hurt- don't ask- wierd rationalization going on there.

Anywho, what I am really wondering is how the body responds to sweet tasting soda with no calories. Is insulin spiked because the tastebuds THINK something sugary is coming in? or is it truly calorieless?

Ohhhhhh, I never ever touch aspartame! I think it's so awful for your body...

We had a big discussion here in LL about this once before, must have been while you were on hiatus! And of course it polarized people. I'm at work, but later on I'll see if I can find the thread for you!

As far as your specific question, no I don't think it would spike your insulin levels, but artificial sweetners ARE known for stalling weight loss. Just for other reasons.

I have never liked the taste of diet soda.

I'd rather drink water if I had the choice between diet soda and water.

As for cancer theories, I usually don't bother reading about them since things change from decade to decade on "theories."

My parents and family members have all lived long lives (usually in their 90's) and they eat what they want, smoke, drink, etc. I think if you are prone to something, your're prone to it. Life is to short to deny onself simple human pleasures. I believe that moderation is the key. Just my opinion.

Because Diabetes is all over my family, diet soda has been in the house since I was a kid. However...I don't drink it anymore because over time of observing, I realized I was having negative physical reactions to aspartame: headache and mood swings in particular. I prefer water too.

Hi Fajita

I never touch regular soda-wasted calories. I will, very rarely, have diet caffinated soda, when my eyelids become heavy at work and I can't stand the thought of another cup of coffee...but I do like diet ginger ale when I'm sick. I find that soda, diet and regular, makes me feel dehydrated, dunno if you've noticed the same.

I like club soda now though-with lime.

I can't imagine that diet soda helps with weight loss unless it replaces a heavy usage of regular soda in someone's diet. Why not go for iced tea instead?

I don't know the exact reasons why aspartame hinders weight loss, but I've been told that by several health care practitioners. And it's one of the first things they ask you about if you hit a plateau in Weight Watchers.

moth, yes it's true, theories change in time and all things in moderation, for the most part. But there is some research that suggests aspartame is a very dangerous chemical. Of course other theories refute it, it's up to individuals to decide.

Thanks guys, all of you, so much.

I loooooove ginger ale, diet or not. But I am taking this all into consideration. It's not that I really really love diet soda, it's just that my parents have so much of it, and I think it's just the carbonation I want. I'm gonna try and hook myself onto club soda with lime - didja say lime?!?!

Yes soda makes me thirsty!!

I've heard that you should avoid diet pop with protein, in combination it creates some sort of chemical that is hazardous. I can't recall what it is but I'm sure if you search on the net you'll find it. Stick with what's natural - sugar, butter....

unfortunately, i think im addicted to diet soda. i've heard a lot of theories about how it's dangerous, but there are TONS of sodas out there without asparteme. i susually have one diet soda a day. there's a brand called Hanson's I think, that makes really good flavored soda. I find that I dont really crave the caffeine or sugar, and much as i just crave the fizz of soda!
thats why the natural sodas and spritzers are so good...they may be a little more expensive but definately more healthty...if youre trying to quit diet soda gradually start replacing it with these.

Hi everyone

As my quest for a diet that works continues, I came upon a low carb plan that, at first, allowed diet soda. But in later books by this author, diet soda was not allowed, nor anything with aspartame, since it was found to react in the body just like sugar and caffeine does, prohibiting weight loss. They recommended Splenda instead. I try not to drink any soda now, except for the ones in health food stores when I really need that fizz-hehehe. (All of this as I polish off the last of the Halloween leftover candy...what a hypocrite I am! Or, maybe just human.)

Love,

Kat

Ah! That is exactly what I wanted to know about, was how the body reacts to it. I can't let go of caffeine, but as for the aspartame I can let it go. I just need fizziness so club soda is good or seltzer.

(I eat candy too)

FOE, totally foe!

Think about putting chemicals in your body. Is that what Mother Nature intended? Not.

Regular sodas are not good for you either.

I like to drink water, or Emergen-C. Crystal Geiser makes a nice juice/mineral water drink with vitamins.

I am not sure if you will think its foolish, and I am not trying to send the gloom boogeyman at you..but check out this link on aspartame..........
http://www.aspartamekills.com/

I cant even look at a diet soda any longer. Even if 52% of this is the real deal, I am not taking the chance.
