Up til last summer, I had been an on-and-off vegetarian/vegan for nine years. One day, I read about how we should care for animals and I just decided I wanted to give up meat entirely. But at that time I was poorly informed and a year later, having been suffering from malnutrition, I started eating meat again (never truely realised that you never need meat) . Then after a while, I became a lacto-ovo-vegetarian. For some time, I got really depressed and ate a load of McDonald's junk food.Last summer, I visited a friend whom I haven't seen for almost a year. To my astonishment, he was (and still is) a vegetarian. Something I hadn't known at all. At that time I was a meat eater and we came up to the subject about diet. Then I found out he didn't (and still doesn't) eat meat. I asked him 'why not?' He simply replied 'just don't.' Then I just said 'I should quit meat. Everybody should.' The next day I once again became a vegetarian. This time, I have gathered sufficient information on what to eat in order to maintain my health, to obtein enough nutrients, and the downright ugliness and cruelty of factory farming, I have become determined not to eat meat anymore. Not long ago I went vegan. There are lots of reasons why I don't eat egg products, dairy products and bee products. I just feel like a whole new person and totally refreshed. This time I will stay vegan. For sure. ------------------ Dana IP: Logged |

I've been a vegetarian for about 6 years, I think. I gave up red meat a few years before white meat, but I don't think that counts as "vegetarian", . I'm not vegan yet though ... will be one day. ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

trill! That's great! Veganaise is the best. Now, if you haven't tried it already, I can't recommend enough how good it mixes with brown rice miso as a sandwich condiment. The miso adds this great earthy sweetness. (I can't vouch for other flavors of miso tho.. haven't tried them. I'm just too completely satisfied with the brown rice variety) IP: Logged |

every time i try to be vegan (3 or 4 times so far) i start feeling like i'm on the verge of death, and have little appetite. when i go back to milk my appetite returns to normal and i feel fine again. when i was sick recently from trying to be vegan (and working too hard with an appetite that was easy to ignore) i felt like i had to eat fish. i almost went to buy chicken nuggets one night but -mysteriously- the fuse for my headlights blewbefore i ate the fish it felt like my energy was being taken from about 100,000 different directions. the fish kind of 'blocked up' the energy leak IP: Logged |

All my life My family's vegetarian, so I was born a vegetarian, but I 'experimented' eating meat a few times. Got very, very sick each time. That plus I honestly reaaallly dislike the taste of meat. Chicken, fish, whatever. It all tastes horrible to me! So, I just follow what my body and taste-buds tell me cause they way I figure it, they know best IP: Logged |

hi carnation and alchemiest - that's great you were brought up as vegetarians. a lot of women i talk with - even the veg ones - have reservations about not feeding their children animal products. i guess they worry that the kids will become intolerant and not have the choice when they grow up to eat meat if they want. or something like that. i've been vegetarian for 13 years - since i was 16 and got sick from eating steak before a midterm exam - overload on my poor tummy! then i read Diet for a New America and never went back. i did eat fish for about 8 of those years, and i still occassionally eat eggs and dairy from local organic farms - mostly because i love to travel and i don't want to be left with only bread and water if i end up in eastern europe or something. we're so lucky here that we have access to food creations from around the world - yummy yummy thai, indian, middle eastern, ethiopian, japanese, korean, scottish (just kidding). even american restaurants are finally catching on and not drenching every "veg" dish in nasty processed cheese. whew. within walking distance of my house is a totally organic, vegan, 95% raw restaurant - fancy that! it's elegant and sophisticated and unbelievable tasty. i'm still a cooked food fan, though. thanks for bringing up this topic - always great to exchange ideas and give each other support for a huge lifestyle choice that's still sometimes seen as eccentric. (my grandmother for one will never forgive me for passing up her fried chicken!) ------------------ namaste, xelena IP: Logged |

Ive been Vegetarian for 3 Months, and vegan for a little while, ive only recently been enlightened to the cruelty and the health issues. But I must say Im much more healthier now. And I've had no trouble what so ever in changing the way I eat. Its been very easy. I was in a debate with a meat-eater and he said you can't get Vitamin B12 from plant sources, which is very common to hear, and said basically I need meat. I was very upset, until the next day when I started working at a local fruit shop that I read on the back of a mushroom bag that mushrooms are a strong source of Vitamin B12, so I took it home with me and showed him the truth. I get everything I need from plant food. As I know almost everything there is to know about fruits, and veggies. And working in a fruit shop is handy, everyday I end up eating about 2 bananas, 2 apples, 1 paw paw, 2 plums, litres of grapes juice, loads of spinach, lots of mushrooms, bowls of cabbage, you name it. I eat all this everyday, for my meals, its great, all I do is gather all the veggies I want and steam them for dinner. My partner wonders how I do it? Like its hard? I couldnt put fries or donuts, or even dairy anywhere near my mouth now, I feel so clean and energised. Its the best thing I've ever done for myself.

I'm not I've tried but... dang sometimes I just crave a big steak. I'd probably be able to get over it but it's difficult with a husband that is a HUGE meat person. If I serve one vegetarian dish he gets his undies in a knot. ------------------ you gave me strength, you pushed the blades away from me...oh how we dreamt to change the world... and we would never give in, no matter what they say... a really cool connection in a cruel world... My hubby's a meat-eater, too. We realized it was going to be a big-issue for us so we set out ground-rules before we were married. I really wanted no meat at all in the house while he really wanted all meat in the house. We both realized we were being stubborn about it so we compromised. Now, there's no red-meat in the house and only fish and white meat are allowed. We both agreed this would be a fair way to give in to try to respect each other's feelings. Our friends think it's nutty but we love each other very much and at least we try to make an effort to understand each other's viewpoints. Vegetarianism is a big deal to me but I couldn't imagine not being with my hubby over it, you know? ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

Hello all!I've been vegetarian for 9 years now. SunChild, thanks for that info - I thought mushrooms had no nutritional value. I love them - eat them all the time. Now I can eat them coz they taste good and know that they're fortifying me with my Vit B as well. SunShyne IP: Logged |

No worries, you'll be suprised how many nutrients you'll get out of some vegetables, you can get more calcium out of broccoli than milk, and there's heaps more iron in spinach than in a peice of animal flesh. ------------------ "Infinity Extends Outward Through Space And Time.
