I bite my nails. I have been biting them for forever. My fingernails now resemble something found on the hands of Mummys recovered in the ancient tombs of Egypt.

That bitter solution you get to paint on them, 'Stop and Grow', yea..it doesnt work for me.

Any tips, please. No pun intended

I bite mine too. Its a bad bad habit. Anytime I get a nice nail growing I just have to bite or tear it off.

What's wrong with biting your nails? If you keep a running record in your mind that biting your nails is wrong, then you will continue to bite your nails to prove that you are not wrong.

gawd, you should see my nails. blech!

only think that has ever worked is having fake nails on. instantly look good, and i just don't have a desire to bite them because they aren't my fingernails.

stop it.

j/k.. I know it isn't easy.
Ecrinal has something that has "Bitrex" in it. it is the bitterrest substance known to man, and it is non-toxic. It is horrid.

Can you, when you get the urge... grab a file.. the kind you smooth the surface with, and stimulate the nails that way? Or play with your lips, or chew on toothpicks? Paint your nail.. spenmd a long time on moiturising cuticles, making them perfect.. and you will be less inclined to ruin your manicure... and you do something less destructive, yet just as satisfying, with your body?

If you knew what you stored in terms of bacteria on and under your nails you'd think twice. People touch things that you touch every day. Do you scrub your nails every single time you bite them? It's gross and now with the new emerging skin diseases we really do have to be careful.

Please try to remember this. I know it's not easy cause years ago I used to chew my own nails. What stopped me is what I saw under a microscope. Supermarket carts freak me out as do public loos and hand rails. I have to live in the real world, but as sure as hell don't have to stick it in my mouth!

That wouldnt help me. I guess Im not afraid of germs that much. I mean, I feel that unless you lock yourself in the house, you're gonna come in contact with germs anyways. I hope I dont sound like Im being rude or anything, because I dont mean to. I mean thats cool that youre looking to stay away from germs and stuff, but its not something that has ever bothered me personally.

I dont always bite them anyways. A lot of times if I see a nail growing I will peel or tear it off. I think its because I get nervous when I talk to others (im quite an introvert) so I focus attention on my nails.

I have started the pampering the nails trick and see if that works.

ooh, i can definitly relate to the shopping cart-public loo-handrail thing,in the winter i try to keep my gloves on in the grocery store but i spose id feel a little like jack nicholson (where hes a bit OCD in the movie,"as good as it gets")if i were to try that on a warm sunny day.....but actually the more i think about it, my nice leather(sorry) gloves must be thouroughly contaminated maybe my disposable hair colouring gloves would be a good idea ... hey has anyone heard that were sposed to stop using yhe anti-bacterial hand soaps cuz the bacterial strains are mutating and were all gonna die....?

Whoa, honkeycat_1963 Ok. That I dont doubt actually. I mean look at whats happening now with global warming. All of nature is getting confused. Living beings are constantly evolving and becoming stronger to cope. A lot of this 'we are doomed' stuff is just sensationalising by the media.

In the UK now, they are recoiling all products with a red dye nemd SUDAN1 (why SUDAN by the way, why not MICHIGAN or MOSCOW) because it might cause cancer. Whereas a product proven to cause cancer, is left as it is. Funny.

Thanks for the tips, Pixelpixie.

Gia, I hear you. Thats what my parents tell me. They made me wash my hands as soon as I entered the house to see all the cack I had accumulated. But like miss_apples, it didnt repel me.
I mean I would never do a 'britney' (freaks me out just thinking bout it), but I actually thinks it healthier to be slightly dirty in this day and age to build up immunity.

I'm sure If I took a peek under a microscope....would be a different story.

G'day Danny

In my experience (being a L-O-N-G time nail biter) this is not really a 'habit', but rather an outlet for your anxiety. Try and relax a bit more - and it you feel the need to bite your nails - take Pixelpixies advice and grab a nail file (Good idea . It worked for me (Now i just have to stop picking my nose... Only kidding

Hi Danny, I also bite my nails its a terrible habit and I agree with Nebel that its more of an anxiety thing. If you are really serious about stopping you should try hypnotherapy, its gets to the real reason you bite your nails and hopefully helps you overcome it. Good Luck!

Yes, yes... the nail file works. I have a habit of biting when my I notice a hang nail. The smoother my fingertips, the less of a chance there is for biting..
Good luck!

I have been a nail biter all my life. It is related to anxiety. And how many of your parents have naged and naged you to stop? A piece of info I found says nail biting is the "spite of a parent. Perfectionism over tiny details. Eating away at the self." A lot of poeple with a lot of anxiety will not stop at the nails, this is self mutilation. I also found an affirmation...

"I am a mature creative individual. I accept and am secure in my maturity."

I see the connection to a parent for myself, but it's not etched in stone.

I came across some information that said nail biting indicates a zinc deficiency. Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc and zinc tablets are pretty inexpensive.
