Neti Pot!!!!!
These things are great! It sure is better than feeling like you are blowing your head up "trying" to clear the sinuses! And having to use drugs. The funny thing is it seems to clear the mind/third eye also. Maybe having the gunkies out of the upper sinus cavities, which are in front of the pineal gland is what helps. The pressure and sinus headaches abate.

well, those two will get you started. You can get them cheaper from some catalogues, like Pacific Spirit, Whole Life etc.

How do you prevent choking on it, or some other strange bodily reaction to this?

Do you have any tips on using it safely? And also, can you add things to the water for helping symptoms like dryness and irritation? I ask because I live in a very dry area and lately my nose and sinuses have been bothering me.

(I didn't look at the links yet, but I will now, in case my questions are answered there.)

I don't know about this but I do swab the inside of my nostrils in the winter with an oil free moisturizing liquid. I don't get colds all winter. I have read that it is not moisture that breeds the germs it is the dryness that does so the concept of this makes sense to me.

thirteen...You are correct. And there are oil free products for the inside of dry noses. I think one is called "Nosease", and of course, the NON medicated moisturizing nasal sprays. These can be plain saline with moisturizers, or even menthol added. The key here is to try and get away from the OTC drugs and or presciption drugs. Also never put petrolatum(Vicks etc.) in your nose! It will mess up your nasal PH levels and make things worse in the long run. It is akin to douching with anything stronger than water/vinegar, or yogurt as needed. Anything stronger is not good for the female genital tract for regular use. And so goes the putting of too many chemicals/drugs up/in ones noses.

okay, I read the articles, but can you give me some descriptions of how it feels, how easy it is to choke on it, or any bothersome sensations associated?

zoso....since my husband is a newbie at it, I will ask him for a description. I am so used to doing it. It is like getting use to wearing contact lenses. More asap!

The first few times that you do it, it feels like there is fire going throughout your sinuses - that may have been the salt that I was using, though.

And it does get better.

I've never choked using it.

proxieme!....Yes, the amount of salt does make a difference. First it must be completely dissolved. The water must be warm, but not coffee hot. I would say, not more than 100 degrees, or your body temperature. Also it shouldn't feel like fire, unless your nose is already sore, or the salt is too strong or too weak for you. Everyone's PH is different. Generally I feel too much is better than too little. Think of the strength you would find tolerable to gargle with. When done right, you shouldn't feel much of anything, if salt and temperature are just right for you, and your nose/sinuses are not already raw and sore. But even it they are, it will make you heal twice as fast. I find that it is easiest done while sitting on a low stool or the toilet. If you are really afraid of making a mess, you can do it in the bathtub, or leaning over a sink. I have not experienced choking. You are letting it flow through one nostril and through your sinuses, then out your other nostril. You then blow your nose and repeat the process in the other nostril. It should not go in your throat, you are not breathing it. You can breathe during the process through your mouth just fine. If it seems to be going in your throat, just lower your head more and turn your head to the side more. It takes a little practice. If you are not doing it over a sink, just hold a cup or glass under the draining nostril. Warning, your nose will run! But not for long. It does work.
PS. My husband said he is a bit--y Cancerian, and can't get used to contact lenses, but said the neti pot is much easier, and he highly recommends it's use!

Yay! My thread is still here!
OK....
There is another neti pot method you can get in a kit called "Positive Pressure".
It uses the same packets of PH balanced saline moisturizer as used in the neti pot.
However a special bottle is used.

I use the Sinus Rinse system from NeilMed. Pretty inexpensive, and works good for me!
