My daughter had a stomach flu last week, which developed into a cough, but her spirits were better...
Now she woke up about two hours ago with intense ear pain.
She is the stubbornest mule in the world and I am at my wits end, I can't help her.... she won't let me, just insists on crying and being in pain, instead of taking acetaminophen.
I've tried hot washcloth/blowdryer, and I had to walk away with a chewable tablet in front of her, in the hopes she'd take it if I removed myself from the fruustrating situation.
So much for valentine's exchanges at school tomorrow, poor poo-bear.
Just wanted to vent.

Hi so sorry to hear about your little valentine...Plain cotton worn in the ear and laying down with either ear flat to the pillow works well unless the "wet" is on the OTHER side of the eardrum. There is a passageway that can get a bit of phlegm in it and cause problems. The cotton will still help by drawing moisture away and reducing pressure. Let her feel the moisture on the cotton after awhile. Maybe reflexology?

Thank you!
I tried to post a while ago about her progress, but my server froze and I had to reboot, and well.. I had a child to tend to, so I didn't bother.
She's better now... a bit. I got her to eat finally..
What I had been doing is filling a jcloth with coarse sea salt, nuking it, and wrapping it in a soft cotton sock. It soothed her and it's supposed to draw the impurities away.
She is sleping now finally.. with her ear exposed, which is a feat in itself.
So I hope tomorrow is better for her and she doesn't wake up in pain tonight.
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!

My MIL said.."oh, ear indection, you need to get her antibiotics!" I didn't want to go that route... of course she did it thirty years ago, as everyone else, that's what you did.. but that's also why antibiotics don't work as well, those little bugger viruses have mutated.
I read a study in that something crazy like 97% of ear infections went away on their own with no antibiotics.... so let's hope that is what unfolds.
Well mening people seem to think their way is the only way.. but it is not so.

dear pixelpixie ~

garlic and mullein will fix up an ear infection quite effectively...i've always used these for my babe in place of antibiotics, and they've never failed.

you can make a garlic oil infusion by heating up some garlic cloves in olive oil....or you can get pure mullein oil from a natural foods market.

whatever you use, adding a few drops of the warm oil to the ear will relieve pain and alleviate the infection. to avoid heating the oil too much before adding a few drops to the ear, simply hold a metal spoon under hot running water to heat it, and then add room temperature oil to the spoon. then add a few drops from the spoon to babe's ear.

i've used these from the time my bambino was a babe in arms. i always waited a while, as ear infections do tend to disappear without any intereference....but if the pain continued, these were the best solutions.

my babe is three now....and every once in a while has an ear infection, and now asks for some mama's milk in his ear....he he, we still nurse...trying the self-weaning thing....and i always tried just a little breast milk in his ear before the oil...that works most of the time...and it's his favorite remedy too, as mama's milk is still his favorite concoction...it seems to fix just about anything.

well, love and light to you and your babe...

Thanks Salome!
I had read about the olive oil/garlic.. and that was to be my next move if what I was doing didn't provide relief.... but I didn't quite know how to heat it, so thank you for the tips.
Plus, my little one is always wary of me approaching her with anything invasive or 'medicinal'.. she absolutely has to be treated with patience and explanations.. but even still, she is so stubborn, you can explain with logic and compassion and she still won't let me do things..... frustrating, as I know it will help her.
I snuck in a few drops of peroxide, when pressing a hot cloth to her ear too, and luckily I got to do that, if she'd seen the dropper, it would've been a battle.

I was an extenda-feeder too, ( two+ years with both my kids) as a result, this is her *maybe* second ear infection ever.... I think my son may have had two in his life as well... usually after a general cold.. ah well, it's their job to get colds, means they're healthy.

My kids self-weaned as well. They know what they need. My friend's child is just under two, and a few weeks ago, she said to her mommy.. "I too big for boo-bas now." and just like that, she stopped.
She's an Aries.. her Brother, the Taurus, ended up on the booba for a lot longer than his sister.... pretty funny, when you consider the nature of the sunsigns.

cheers mama pixie...taking care of kiddies and babes with loving kindness is the goddess way of blessing the earth...

my babe's a triple leo and i think he's just typical of his gender...demanding and finding comfort in nummies for everything requiring comfort and attention.

he still nurses like a newborn some days...and my flow hasn't waned since he was an insatiable newborn...sometimes i have to tell him that mama exists for more than just being a fun milkshake machine... and some days i feel like a docile cow just grazing all day in order to satisfy her young.

but i always think to the day that he won't 'nursey' anymore, and something close between us will be lost...but maintain the hope that the time we spend this close together now will be significant and everlasting.

OKay, it's time for some magical help.

She seemed like she was feeling better today.. now it has moved to her other ear as well.
This girl will not take medicine.
Right now I have her head sandwiched between two hot water bottles, and she has been crying for a while.. finally she has some peace so I am hoping she'll sleep.
Last night we went out for a family dinner ( extended family, there were about 25 of us!) and she wouldn't eat a thing.. I can feel her hiopbones and spine when I pick her up, as she won't eat.. and I am trying to get her to drink as much as I can.
I am willing for her to eat ANYTHING at this point, and so last night when we got home, I made her pink heartshaped hotcakes, cuz that's what she wanted..( and some fruit to go bars, which is good) but has only eaten a bowl of cereal today... with some water and juice.
PLease send some light.
I asked her to picture the 'bad bugs' and then to picture good white happy things coming in and eating up the bugs, and she'll get better.
As it is, I will have to take her in to the walk in clinic tomorrow ( I don't have a Doctor anymore, they quit their practice) but even then, they will prescribe her antibiotics which she won't take....
She started with a stomach flu, this has ben going on too long.
I want my girl back.

Thanks.
She's five.. her name is Claire.

Pixelpixie,

I hope claire is feeling better, I know how hard it is when our little ones are suffering. My sympathy goes out to both of you.

Im happy to hear you are taking her to the physician. Even though this sounds like its resulting from a Flu virus, the fluid/mucus build up within her ear can allow bacterial growth to occur.

I understand your hesitation to have her take antibiotics but in this case I feel they are a wise choice.

*wishes claire comfort*

Regards,

Focused Chi
