I have had Depression since I was a kid. My first suicide attemp was at 12. I ran away from home at 15; I went to my sisters' house in TX. A crazy man snatched me up. I had my son, & got married at 16. I had my daughter at 18. I developed severe post-partum depression; that led to my second attempt. I suffered with bouts of major depression on & off. I developed other illnesses-physical & mental. I moved back to MN in '92. I went into full remission from all of my illnesses; I got my GED & went to college for Video Production. I got sick & had to quit. My son had been diagnosed with Schizophrenia at age 12, and was in & out of hospitals for 4 years. In order to help my son I got connected with a resource called Bio-Brain who had all sorts of info on mental illnesses. I read a book from Dr. Carl C. Pfeiffer (I don't remember which one). He said that nutrition helped or cured many of his patients. My son, Steve, went in the hospital at 16. The Dr. took him off all meds to see what was relly going on. Through the power of prayer he went into remission. He's almost 25 now, and he has not relapsed! I was not so blessed. Major depression had me. I found out about the Pfieffer Treatment Center. www.hriptc.org I went to the outreach clinic in MN, and I was diagnosed with a Copper/Zinc imalance. I was zinc deficient & copper toxic. I took the vitamins they prescribed, but I had some form of malabsorption. Through Dr. Pfeiffers book I found out about food allergies, one of which was oats. When I ate oatmeal I would have a major depressive episode. I went to an accupuncture college here in MN. That got rid of the allergies. All this still wasn't enough. In 1999, I tried it again. I belive in God, and he/she has a sense of humor. I had my pills ready, but I had a thought-If I use alcohol it will work better. Everybody knows you don't mix drugs & alcohol; that'll kill ya! This thought came into my mind a couple times. I went to the liquor store; I parked my car where no one would see until day, began to implement my plan, and I woke up the next morning with a vague recollection of opening the car door & throwing-up. It would have worked if my higher power hadn't suggested the booze. I heard a quiet thought that said "Honey, you can't come home yet". I drove a 1/2 block to a house, and had the woman call an ambulance. There was no liver damage or anything. The Dr. thought I was trying to get attn, so she released me! I couldn't take anymore, so I checked myself into the psyc hospital. I , up to this point, was medication intollerant. A new med had hit the market that I tried. It still wasn't enough, so I asked for ECT (shock treatments). Over time it began to help, but in the meantime I was still searching for answers. I came across a chapter, in the book I had ordered. I went & had all of my 'silver' fillings replaced by white ones. Then I did a 2 year detox from the mercury & copper. I made a home brew tea that had Cilantro (for mercury), Gotu Kola (for depression), Ginko & Rosemary (for circulation)& chamomile (for anxiety). I flavored it with Black tea & spearmint leaves. I did this 3 weeks on & 1 week off. I got the herbs in bulk at www.pacificbotanicals.com Today I don't have major depression. I believe that God guided me every step of the way. I had my mom, kids & friends praying for me. I still have an arduous journey ahead (with my buffet of maladies), but I won't be going through it with major deprssion!!!

Dear Kim, wow you are truly an inspiration.I have been battling depression all my life as well, recently was prescribed Lexapro for it,but decided not to take it.I try to live a really natural lifestyle, and I dont even take tylenols or anything,I feel very hesitant taking it.So instead I started meditating more, delving deeper, questioning my sadness.Ive found that being close to Nature really makes me happy,so if I get down I just go for a walk down to the park and sit by the river. That Tea you speak of sounds like it would help, with the different herbs and such.Thank you for sharing your story, and I pray your the rest of your journey is a peaceful one.Peace Love and Light to you Eliza Libra/Scorpio/Aquarius

Salome,

It is very important to have your amalams removed by a dentist that is willing to use precautions. The dentist needs to put an O2 mask on your nose, & use a rubber dam to keep the excess bits out of your mouth. I got really sick despite the precautions, cuz the vapors go everywhere. Minimizing the exposier is paramount. Then follow the recipe for detox. Mercury has an infinity for hiding in brain cells. That is why it takes 2-3 years to detox.

recipe for "Brain Stew"
1 gal purified or distilled water
1/2 bunch of fresh Cilantro
1/4 cup Chamomile, Rosemary, Gotu Kola, Ginko
1/8-1/4 cup Lobilia ( for muscle pain)
3-8 black or green tea bags (or buy bulk)
1/2-1 cup Spearmint or Peppermint or any flavor you choose (work with it)
Boil gal of water, steep overnite, strain herbs in the AM & add another gal of water. Makes 2 gal. drink 2-12oz glasses daily (this brew is very energizing so drink early in the day. Do this for 3 weeks on 1 week off-repeat.

Wow,

If I ever get the blues, all I have to do is read the kind words that you all have left for me.

Trillian,

I've decided to buy my tea from Pacific Botanicals. The last thing I need is floride messing with my thyroid.

Next on my to do list is follow the diabetic or glycemic index diet. I have hypoglycemia. That contributes to the low-grade depression (dysthymia).

Kim

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. And you are a truly remarkable human being in the light of self-healing, and always holding on to yourself you've come such a long way. I wish you, your son, and all your loved ones love, light, hope and peace of mind

The herbal teas remedies sound good to me- it would be one of my personal preferable methods for additional healing- the term is for myself, though. I've been thinking over detoxification recently- there are programs as such available in my area, now it's only up to me whether I want to undertake it sooner rather than later...they're expensive. But detoxifying my own body should be really worthwhile...

I came across with the book "The Omega-3 Connection: How You Can Restore Your Mental Wellbeing and Beat Memory Loss and Depression" (it's odd that its title in the book is slightly different from the one on the cover- "treat" instead of "beat") by Andrew L Stoll, MD- the omega-3 fatty acids and their beneficial effects on our mental health have been discussed by physicians, researchers etc in the US and in the UK for at least over a decade. There are three different types of omega-3 fatty acids: the plant-derived alpha-linolenic acid (ALA or ALNA), and the remaining two which are found largely in fish oil: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). I've just started comparing the book with another, "Plant Based Nutrition and Health" by Stephen Walsh, PhD. In his book he argued that ALA/ALNA could be consumed by humans, then be transformed into EPA and DHA in the human body- though Dr Stoll has a different view; I have just begun reading these books. The modern day Western diet has made many of us having omega-3 deficiency. There's been evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can help our mental health a great deal. I just felt like sharing this with you folks, perhaps some of you have already known this or have even discussed this, I don't know.

I think it was thebigaliza who mentioned feeling better when getting close to the nature- which I totally agree on; I think it's because of the endorphine in the nature, e.g. the trees/woods, the fresh air...during the day in particular...and certainly more than that...the nature could be a good healing means, an ideal cure...if one knows well how to make the best of it.

To all-

I have recently discovered I have a sensitivity to wheat. Not gluten but wheat. If i eat it i get physical symptoms and become depressed. I am now off my sarafem too (aka prozac). If I stay away from wheat, dairy fats and transfats I do really well. I never thought wheat was my problem because i am a virgo ( earth sign) and I just couldn't beleive that wheat would bother me. I also take b complex vitamins, zinc, vit c and copper. They all seem to help out. I have come to beleive that what we eat can really mess up our systems. How I found out about the wheat: i prayed for spirit to show me what i needed to do to solve a certain physical problem. It came to me through a series of coincidences within a few days. Miracles are everywhere if we just ask.

thirteen,

I've been having similar experiences too. There are times right after having eaten certain foods, I would almost immediately become dysthymic, or even have suicidal thoughts; fortunately, they rarely last long enough to cause serious problems as they've been appearing on and off. Personally, for me, I'm not sure if it's psychological or biological, but usually after I have eaten meat (not recently), my mood would suddenly plunge. I don't think it was feelings of guilt. At least on a conscious level I never felt that guilty about it, but that was what would happen to me. Worth further studying.

Defiant, yes i ve had the same. bouts of crazy thoughts that didnt last long but nonetheless really had me worried. I did read of one woman who responded badly to pork. Look for a list of common food allergens and start there by eliminating them and see how you feel. That is what I did more or less and of course prayer. I still am in shock that these basic foods bother me as i have eaten them all my life. Oh yes, I ate breaded chicken last night. I took off breading but Im sure I ingested some and today I am very tired, not to motivated to do anything. Up to today Ive been so great.

One thing many people don't realize is that food allergies are usually favorite foods that you've eaten all your life. I was not only allergic to oats, but wheat, barley, RICE, green beans & carrots.

I had the standard skin test done. That is a diagnostic procedure right out of the Spanish Inquisition! I had to lay on my stomache for 15-20 minutes while large welts formed on my back. All I remember thinking is SOMEONE COME SCRATCH MY BACK!!! They can do a blood test for allergies, but it doesn't make as much money in the US. Demand it any way! That test was horrible!

Stay well all.
