Anyone have any first-hand experience on this?

With my son I didn't use anything and my period didn't resume until he was 8 or 9 months old. I'm not huge on hormonal contraceptives... I don't like what they do to my body. Condoms are out, too.

I have used Nuvaring in the past, but it contains estrogen, which I know can adversely affect my milk supply.

Basically, we want something that will keep us from getting pregnant before our wedding next October.

Share your experiences with me, ladies.

Thanks a bunch!

I totally understand where you're coming from. After our son was born we were also interested in different birth control options. I flat out refused to take anything hormonal so there went that. Condomns and I don't get along what with the latex and I won't do sheep skin.

So ... we settled on a diaphragm or, as hubby calls it, the "plastic cookie". Yes, you do have to get it fitted and that might seem like a pain, but I think it's 100% worth it. Once you get the hang of it, it takes less than a minute to get in. The spermicide is easy to apply and reapply if necessary. It works fine with most if not all lubricants. And, if you plan ahead a little, you can have it in place and be ready to go quite some time before the idea of lovemaking becomes a reality. The only drawback I see is that you have to leave it in place for 6-8 hours after the fact in case any stragglers didn't die off immediately. However, I can't even feel it when it is in so it's really not bad at all. I guess if you're very picky about getting your hands "dirty" that might bother you a bit but unless you're OC about it it's really not a big deal. And, if I recall correctly, the protection is about 98% if you're using a spermicide which is quite good all things considered.

Really ... I don't sell these. It's just the only thing that worked for us and it's great.

I know you can still get pregnant while you are nursing even if your monthly cycle hasn't returned so this was a priority for us. Glad I knew that, too, because my son is 16 months old and my cycle hasn't returned. I can't imagine having relied on the nursing theory and then finding myself with child again.

Anyway, best of luck to you! There are many options out there. Try them out if you'd like and see what works for you.

In some areas, you can still get a cervical cap. Yes, requires fitting, but can remain in place for much longer than a diaphragm (making it more convenient), and is a little more reliable, as it fits snugly over the cervix.

Some people claim success with Neem pills. There is some research being done with Neem Oil, but the odor is allegedly off-putting. You can research Neem on the 'net.

Whether or not you get your period, you might still be ovulating. There are natural methods to determine whether you are, including a watch for mucus. There are lots of books on the subject.

Why are condoms out?

In good health...

Thanks for the info, ladies. I'll check more into these options.

Why are condoms out? Not for any medical reason...

Yup. I'm still nursing and cycle free! It's amazing. The docs say it's perfectly normal but not as common and that I'm "very lucky". When pregnant I just always said to myself that I wouldn't get it back until I was done nursing and that's how it's been. *edit*
