I've been veggie for 16 years and am now seriously considering turning vegan - any vegans out there that can give me some advice re ensuring you are getting all the required nutrients that you need? Would be great to here any personal accounts re turning from veggie to vegan. I'm gonna miss cheese!!WB ------------------ 'You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. Good for you! What comes to mind at the moment is that you should try to avoid soy substitutes...like tofu, soy cheese, soy yogurt and soymilk. A lot of vegans I know use soy as a staple until they find out the truth about soy. If you love those things you can replace it with Almond Mylk...and you can also make almond cheeze. I just posted a new string with recipes. Here's a bit about soy incase you don't know http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/index.htm As far as nutrients go... you should consider eating a lot of raw leafy dark green veggies for iron, protein (aminos) and calcium. Spirulina is also an excellent supplement that will replace a lot of nutrients found in animal products. Please do your research on vitamin b12, and make your own choices whether to supplement or not. A b12 deficiency can cause serious problems. b12 is found in animal products, soil (unwashed organic food), sea vegetables and spirulina. The latest research indicated that b12 is manufactured in our lower intestines...and the main cause of a deficiency is that inability to absorb adequate amounts. You will find a lot of conflicting information. Please research carefully, and if you are in doubt, use a supplement. IP: Logged |

Universal synchronicity! I've been meaning to buy B12 all week and keep forgetting!! Interesting thread In fact I'm gonna get some now - last time I tried the capsules had soya in them and I'm allergic to soya Gonna pop downstairs to the chemist and investigate before the busy weekend begins.. SunChild - thank you for the previous thread regarding soya substitutes - can you explain the big problem with soya as I hadn't heard about it?Managed a totally vegan shop this eve - as I'm gonna really miss cheese I made the mistake of buying a vegan substitute and it was dreadful!!! No way I could eat that! Checked out Marmite (yeast extract) and per 4g serving it contains 60% of the RDA for B12 - I eat plenty so should be ok! Luckily Linda Marcartney's veggie sausages are suitable for veagns and contain no soya - I used to eat loads of Quorn as a veggie, loved it, but every product contains egg so gonna have to give that up! I will write to them to suggest that they make products suitable for vegans too as it is really yummy, very high in protein and very low in fat.
