Hello, all! Here is a secret to beautifying your complexion and uses all natural and inexpensive ingredients! Get an abalone shell ( a large type of sea shell) and put about a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice in it. Using clean fingers, rub the juice around on the shell a bit and lightly massage your face! This clarifys, brightens and clears!
Love, Tuxedo Meow

Lemon is citric acid, a natural astringent ( be careful if you have very dry skin) as well as a natural exfoliant.
It's an acid, which tends to work well for the skin, as the skin does have a natural pH acid barrier. ( Below 7 on the pH scale)

Abalone shell? Is this aesthetic?
I imagine it would be a pretty beauty ritual. I'd feel like Ariel.

But what sort of properties does it bring to the skin in combination? Is it minerals or salt or something?

Thanks!

I am not sure. I learned of this when I was selling things out of my truck one summer- several women purchased the shells for this purpose. When I use the combination my skin brightens and becomes 'clear'- i would like to know more as well- the reason i brought it up was that after moving, i recently discovered a box of abalone shells i forgot i had and remembered this beauty ritual-

I will start using this combo again and let you know. Maybe on one hand and not the other!
Also from past threads, I still use "no age" orange oil directly on my face every AM! Now remember to be advised this can harm some thinner skinned folks and I am not advising anyone to do this!
I have thick skin from constant exposure to semi-tropical sun, riding ATV's on beach rescuing dolphins and turtles, and just from living down here. After using the orange oil for several weeks now, I am first beginning to feel a bit of a tingle when applying it! Depending on the amount of stress I choose to dwell in, my face looks younger and brighter with a reduction of the etched-in-by-the-sun creases.
I have noticed if I rub a fresh lemon on my face it stings-the orange oil does not!
The orange oil also brightens my complexion somehow and the scent also 'brightens' my mornings.
The abalone and lemon juice morning ritual used to make me feel so very tropical and mother-earthy! Maybe I will try the orange oil and abalone shell...
In the abalone shell is a white substance that gradually goes away over time as one uses the lemon in it..whatever that is must be the "secret" ingredient! I will do some on-line research so as to know exactly what I am talking about and not just blowing hot-air! Soon I will look so young I will be carded again! LOL!! Lovingly, Tuxedo MEow

Yikes! Yeah, lemon juice is an natural astringent, but repeated exposure to it will do a serious number on your fingertips, cuticles and fingernails! Ask anyone who's had a restuatrant job where they had to cut lemons everyday. "Lemon rot" is what they called it at the restuarant I worked at. It's pretty nasty.

Wow Gemini Nymph, I never knew that! What happened to the skin, did it eat away? I guess too much of one thing is never good huh?!

Found a pic of an abalone shell for those who aren't sure what they look like (they're all different kinds though);

There are a couple going on ebay at the moment - I'm not sure what I should be paying for one though. Tuxedo Meow, how much is an average abalone shell? - Also is there a particular kind to use for this treatment dya think?

Talking about face brighteners, I recently bought Juice Beauty's Green Apple face peel with natural organic juices, here's a little something about it, I found it very good from one application so far;

quote:
A powerful 13% level of alpha hydroxy-acid complex of certified organic apple, lemon, grape juices, raw cane sugar, and white willow bark dissolve and free dull, lifeless skin for visibly improved skin tone and texture. Vitamin antioxidants and essential nutrients hydrate and nourish fresh skin for a healthy, beautiful complexion.

The other thing that makes a good mask is lemon juice and organic honey mix. You can use it on your face and neck. Great quick pick-me-up. I do it right before I start getting ready to go out. Naturally, it feels sticky so the easiest way to wash it off is in the shower. About 1/3 teaspoon of juice to 1 teaspoon of honey. I like clover honey.

Spot on Kamilla, I've used honey and lemon with raw oats - darn good for natural exfoliation

I love alpha hydroxy acids.

Love them.

I have difficult type skin, in that it is oily but not full blown oily. More than 'combination ' though.. and alpha hydroxy acids are the class of facial products that my face responds the best to.
I can never talk enough about them.. natural sourced or otherwise. ( it's all natural sourced though, really)

Hi-first, please no one immerse themselves in lemon juice!! LOL! Second, an abalone shell should cost between 3 and 7 dollars American. I guess there are variations in size and coloring. the ones I have are about 6-10 inches long.
If i could figure out how to send some out to you for the cost of shipping and handling (the shell would be a gift) I would do that! Any ideas as to how to without anybody with computer access having our private mailing addreses?
Oats, honey, and lemon juice as an exfolient sounds delicious-if used as an all-over body scrub, will it clog the tub?
Love to you, from Tuxedo Meow
