Hey guys, I put on a little weight when Jupiter was in my first house. (It was a happy time though!)

I want to drop a few pounds in a healthy, natural way...I've done so in the past, but right now I'm on a tight budget so it's MUCH harder. In the past I had lots of fresh-squeezed juices and kumbucha and seaweed and salads, but all of those things are EXPENSIVE. Veggies are so expensive.

Help me figure out what to eat! I feel like foods that I think will be healthy (beans and brown rice, etc) are making me stockier.

(I don't buy or cook meat, by the way.)

Some people respond to carbohydrates this way even if they come from good sources.
Particularly if you are a mesomorphic body type (usually a stocky type physique)
This type body likes it's protein.
As you don't eat meat then get it from fish, eggs and vegetarian sources (not too much from those)
Only eat protein and veg (as much as you want) for your evening meal. Eat your carbs early in the day and you will drop the weight.
Eat a small protein only meal before bed (boiled egg or small piece of fish) which will stimulate the release of growth hormone that is released at night and which produces lean muscle.

I agree with Bunnies, protien is where it is at, but you have to be careful with protien.

Dr Atkins knew what he was talking about, no carbs, all protien, then, eventually ease your way back into good carbs, gently. But most folks do not do Atkins properly, they over-indulge in fatty meats and cheeses and this is not healthy.

In women as we age, our metabolism slows down, way down and the carbs we take in and do not use (since carbs are our first line of fule for energy) get stored as fat if not burned for energy. Protien does not get stored as fat, but eventually turns into lean muscle, what is not burned for body fuel.

I understand if you do not consume meat, but as Bunnies suggested lean fish and eggs are just as good and combined with very low carbs you will drop pounds quickly.

Be very wary of veggies, some are loaded with carbs, good carbs, but still carbs. Carrots for instance are taboo to me when I am doing super high protien and super low carbs. Stick to your leafy greens for low carb options.

The only other way to loose weight is to burn off more calories than you take in, and unless you are prepared to exercise for hours a day, or literally starve yourself, you can tweak your body's metabloism and loose the desired weight quickly and healthily.

O, and protien is hard on the kidneys. Whey you loose the desired weight, ease back into good carbs and ease off high amounts of protien.

Thanks guys. It sounds like I might have to stop eating vegan to take off a little weight.

I find that tofu, tempeh, and vegan protein sources are bulking me up. After all, they're pretty much beans.

I'll allow fish and eggs into my diet and see how it goes...

You can still eat them Lucia but just earlier in the day.
I do not advocate cutting any food group out, just to know how they work.
You don't need the Atkins or Zone blurb.
I realised this at age 11 during domestic science lessons at school.

Carbs are for energy.
When do you require most energy? In the day. Any unused carbs will be stored.

Protein for repair and growth.
Most of the growth and repair processes take place at night so give your body more protein then.
If you keep your carb intake moderate and don't intake late in the day the body will then use your stored fat to keep you ticking over from lunch till breakfast the next day.
But if you give it a nice hit of carbs late at night it will say "Cheers for that, no need to access fat stores as I have the easiest supply here"
Simple shuffling. No need to deny yourself anything. Win win!!!

What's a good low-carb vegetarian/vegan dinner?

Salmon, either smoked or broiled, very little oil and olive at that, a side of a green veggie, like zuchinni tossed with a few fresh tomatos and, perhaps a bit of chive/green onion and a nice leafy green salad to compliment, NO iceburg lettuce, only baby spring mix, etc. loaded with spinache, tossed lightly with a mix of olive oil and balsalmic vinegar.

Tuna steaks are good, too, but I have yet to find a way to cook them that is delicious. The deep water fish are supposed to be better for us, but sometimes the strong tastes are hard to get by.

Sometimes I treat myself to shellfish, but generally speaking they are a bit high in cholesterol and a bit pricey too!

As Bunnies said, you can add carbs, early in the day, but make your carb intake days, days that you intend on increased activity to burn them off.

Diet is a highly personal issue and it may take you a while to find the one that is right for you.

True enough, like Bunnies said, people do not need diets like Atkins or Zone, but they provide structure for people that are not ambitious enought to research and experiment what is correct for their own bodies.

Experiment with different foods, and eating at different times of the day and find what works best for you.

I am a big fan of protien over carbs, and good carbs at that, but that is what works best for me in my stalling metabolism at almost 47 years old. Different "diets" have worked differently for me in different phases of my lifetime and this is the one that suits me best now.

I did alot of reasearch on women's metabolism and my medical background provided me a good basis for tweaking out my food consumption for ultimate health and well being.

My bfriend (a heart attack survivor) is internet buddies with Dr. Ornish and my bfriend follows the doc's diet for heart patients and a blood type diet as well. He was not expected to live after a major heart attack at 42, 5 years ago, but has lost lots of weight and is as healthy as anybody I know, and healthier than any patients that I take care of in the ICU!

What I am trying to say, is find the diet that is right for you, but if you want to see marked results fast, lay off the carbs.

Good luck and blessings of health!

O, and if you do not want to indulge in fish, a nice fresh brocolli-tofu, sauteed in sesame oil and a bit of low salt soy is always a good choice. Be careful with the tofu, tho, has a bit of carbs attached.

If you want strictly vegetarian and low carb your only choice is leafy greens and dark green veggies.

If you enjoy the health benefits of kombucha, get a starter "mushroom" and make your own

Thanks! Making my own kombucha sounds fun. And I really find kombucha tasty. (I like sort of sour tastes a lot.)

I exercise a lot. One reason I put on a little weight was exercising less during the week I had the flu, as well as just eating more lately. It's so cold here.

I don't weigh myself, but I've lost an inch off my waist since I posted this. My goal is to lose two more inches (I'm not trying to lose weight just in spots--I just figure that by the time I've lost two more waist inches, the rest of me will be back in shape too.)

Beans are not the only source of vegetarian protein. Did you know that 100 calories of broccoli contains almost twice as much protein as 100 calories of steak?
All greens are stocked with protein. And.. the more you eat, the more weight you lose. But this is because of the low caloric content and the high nutrient and fiber content of the vegetable, not because of the amount of protein. It satisfies you without having to consume an enormous amount of calories. Try eating more green veggies along with your beans, and I mean a LOT of greens. Try aiming for 1 pound of greens every day. Of course, if you can't afford it, it's no big deal. Just eat as much as you can. The more the better.
And don't forget the fruit.
This works best when you don't consume any animal products or refined grains and sugar.
It really does work, though. I just started this diet and I lost 5 pounds in three days.
The closer the food is to its natural state, the better it is for you.
By the way, too much animal protein takes a real toll on your kidneys, because animal protein is very acidic and your body has to work hard to dilute the effects, and this can wreak havoc on your kidneys before you even know it, which is why the Atkins diet is dangerous.
Hope you find the right diet for your body.
Bless you.

Thanks guys!! I've dropped the weight I wanted to drop and I feel way healthier and stronger. I find it's helping me feel full to eat healthy fats (like olive oil) with my dark, leafy greens or broccoli. My skin looks better, too.
