Just a nice concise list of people in the alternative health field with a short bio.

I wish I can go but it's too far and too much.

KEYNOTE: John Robbins is the author of The New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever in an Age of Less. He is also author of the international bestseller DIET FOR A NEW AMERICA: How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health, Happiness, and the Future of Life on Earth, THE FOOD REVOLUTION: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World, HEALTHY AT 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples, MAY ALL BE FED: Diet For A New World, THE AWAKENED HEART: Meditations on Finding Harmony in a Changing World, and RECLAIMING OUR HEALTH: Exploding the Medical Myth and Embracing the Source of True Healing.

John's work has been the subject of cover stories and feature articles in The San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Life, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and many of the nation's other major newspapers and magazines. His life and work have also been featured in an hour long PBS special titled Diet For A New America.

The only son of the founder of the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire, John Robbins was groomed to follow in his father's footsteps, but chose to walk away from Baskin-Robbins and the immense wealth it represented to "…pursue the deeper American Dream…the dream of a society at peace with its conscience because it respects and lives in harmony with all life forms. A dream of a society that is truly healthy, practicing a wise and compassionate stewardship of a balanced ecosystem."

David Wolfe is the author of the best-selling books, Eating for Beauty (4th Edition), The Sunfood Diet Success System (8th Edition), Naked Chocolate (2nd Edition), David Wolfe on Raw Foods, Superfoods, and Superherbs (www.21daystohealth.com), Amazing Grace (3rd Edition), Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future (North Atlantic Books/distributed by Random House, 2009), and The LongevityNOW Program (www.longevitynowprogram.com), David Wolfe empowers and inspires people to take charge of their health even up against all the modern-day demands of bills, technology, environmental pollution, commuting, and inflation. Today, David Wolfe continues to share the stage in the company of Anthony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Buzz Aldrin, T. Harv Eker, John Gray, Les Brown, Barbara DeAngelis, Brian Tracy, and many more.

Dr. Joseph Mercola, M.D. is committed to changing the fatally flawed medical paradigm which prematurely kills hundreds of thousands every year in the US alone and causes needless pain and suffering in millions of others. He was the single biggest reason that the majority of the US chose to refuse the H1N1 vaccine in 2009 despite President Obama declaring a public health emergency and all the media encouraging everyone to receive the vaccine.

He started Mercola.com, the world’s most visited natural health site with over 20 million page views every month. He has two NY Times bestselling books and is frequently a guest on major media such as CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, and Dr. Oz In November 2009, he was named the top Ultimate Wellness Game Changer by the Huffington Post, an honor that celebrates “100 innovators, visionaries, and leaders in 10 categories who are harnessing the power of new media to reshape their fields and change the world.”

Donna Gates is a nutritional consultant, author and lecturer has helped thousands of people overcome candidiasis and other immune system disorders. Her book, "The Body Ecology Diet", was written after years of research to find a cure for her own candida-related health problems. Frustrated with conventional medicine, Donna began in-depth studies and worldwide travels to find the best healing systems.

She studied many different healing concepts, including ancient Chinese medicine, macrobiotics, natural hygiene, raw foods and mega-supplement therapy. Incorporating the most beneficial components of each concept into her own system of health and healing, her success inspired her to share it with others.

Donna's mission is to educate the public and introduce Americans to new concepts and insights for using medicinal foods. Donna championed and brought fermented foods and drinks, Coconut Oil, Young Coconut Kefir, and Stevia to the US.

Much more than a "diet", Body Ecology offers a constantly expanding body of knowledge that focuses on the benefits of establishing and maintaining an inner ecosystem. Eating fermented foods and following the 7 simple BED principles lays down a foundation for health that is essential to wellness. The "Body Ecology Diet" book has evolved into a complete system for rebuilding immunity, has sold over 180,000 copies, and is now in its Tenth edition.

Daniel Vitalis is a leading health, nutrition, and personal development strategist as well as a nature based philosopher. In seeking to answer the health challenges of modern humanity, Daniel deeply immersed himself in the natural medicine, nutritional practices, and lifestyle pursuits that supported our ancestors in many generations of robust health, powerful immunity, and intentional longevity.

His entertaining, motivational and magnetic delivery style has made him an in-demand public speaker in the US and abroad. By seamlessly weaving together a tapestry of modalities, from Herbalism and Nutrition to Science and Mysticism, he consistently expands the boundaries of our perceived limitations. He is the creator of ElixirCraft, an exciting and unconventional Nutritional Medicine Strategy, as well as Find A Spring, a website dedicated to assisting humans in locating natural spring water sources in their area and while traveling.

Daniel teaches us that by incorporating the natural elements into our lives we release ourselves from the confines of societal domestication and reclaim our innate state of Supreme Health & Vitality!

LOL! Good question, kat. They don't look like they are.
However I misquoted the name of the conference. It's LONGEVITY NOW.

I suppose if some centenarians from Okinawa organized a conference on longevity you would be more likely to attend?

i am not likely to attend but i will follow the proceedings...it just amazes me how our own homegrown centenarians are ignored in the field...and how nobody wonders why okinawa? which is a very few miles from nagasaki and hiroshima...and the coral that was so popular a few years ago because of okinawa is RIDDLED with radioactivity.

there are 100,000 centenarians in this country. that is 20% of the world total. most of them are not particularly innovative in their diets as compared to other americans. i doubt many of them eat mcdonald's but there is SO LITTLE INFO on them that i can't even be sure of that!! but the ones i HAVE read about eat meat, dairy and even chocolate. many were smokers for most of their lives. and many live in cities where growing their own is close to impossible...and i want to know why that is. i would think anyone in the field would share my curiosity but most ignore these living examples of longevity.

Is this true?
Can you provide some proof?
I'll go look it up too.
I would LOVE to hear them speak as well, of course. Why are they ignored? Why didn't anyone study them? I don't know. If what you are saying is true them somebody surely must jump on this opportunity even if just to make money.

I found a bit of info:
http://www.worldhealth.net/news/the_new_england_centerian_study/

Doesn't talk about their diet though.

This one mentions diet: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/07/centenarian-genetics/

"Take a guess. How many people are at least 100 years old in the United States? Would you believe more than 84,000 and climbing at an astonishing rate? By the time America's baby boomers reach that milestone, there could be more than a million centenarians. "

i posted a thread from a story a little while ago. it was just an msnbc thing...years ago a pair of sisters wrote a book called "having our say" - they were both around 100 at the time, live together and grow a lot of their own veg.

the trick seems to be simplicity for the most part, and "moderation in all things" as the lady who starred in the clip i posted talks about eating meat and fish daily, how she gave up smoking awhile back, and alcohol, but still eats chocolate chip cookies regularly - she lives in the bronx, which was once a suburb but now more like a ghetto...oh and she also mentioned she has NEVER drunk soda, which her doctor concurred is a major health hazard...

that story estimates the world has about 500,000 centenarians, 1/5 of whom are american - the fact that okinawa's relatively SMALL population sports a large PERCENTAGE of centenarians is what made it the focus of study over a period of 25 years. of course a lot of the younger generation have emigrated and adopted a "modern" lifestyle which has resulted in inferior health pictures(which compromises the "genetics" theory). so the high percentage is partly because the old folks don't feel inclined to leave what they know, and thus constitute a large part of what's left of the community...

personally though i was a longtime burger fan i have NEVER had a mcdonald's (or other similar) burger since the first one i tried...i mean 19 cents was pretty tempting; but the burger was NASTY to people who knew what real meat tasted like. i have boycotted them ever since and my daughter never had one till friends' parents took her there at the age of 8 or so...

i naturally outgrew burgers years ago though once in awhile when i find myself in circumstances that lend themselves i will still have one if it is made of real meat...i wouldn't even eat a mcdonald's salad - without knowing what is in them i find them revolting...turns out there is more sugar in a mcdonald's sandwich than a normal coke...

in this sense older people have the advantage, in that they remember what unadulterated food actually tastes like...

That's interesting, kat.
I never ate beef growing up. It just wasn't available. When I fist had it a few years back I got horrible indigestion. I've only had it a couple of times in my life and most times it's been good organic beef but I still couldn't stomach it. Suffice to say, it was the first meat I gave up.

i understand the vegetarian urge, honest. but over decades of experimenting i have concluded that i am an omnivore, that i thrive on cooked AND raw, and that while i eat organic as much as possible, a little poison doesn't seem to hurt. in fact when i was a child i remember waiting for the schoolbus on a corner surrounded by farm fields, watching the planes dusting the crops (and by proximity, us!). i have also seen so many reversals in "expert" opinion that i pay little attention to them anymore.

i am not sure anyone will ever find a "best" way to live a long and healthy life. there is no one-size-fits-all and so many variables it is probably an unsolvable riddle...

i suspect the "best" way is to continue learning what works best for oneself and not try to adjust to the "norm"...and "moderation" does seem to be a very important factor.

but health and longevity are not necessarily mutually inclusive.

Moderation seems to work for me too or I seem to work for it
It's been a few years since I stopped eating beef and pork, and about one year for chicken.
I'm constantly adjusting my diet as it should be. Meat now repulses me. I tried eating chicken some time ago again and got sick from it. We'll see. I'm exploring raw milk right now. I can live without milk but crave feta cheese and yogurt (I grew up on them). Maybe one day I'll be a raw vegan. Maybe not. Maybe I'll forget all about the labels and just try to be happy with the least amount of harm I can do to the environment and my body. (This isn't a dig, just my POV)

I've seen it happen too. Our fragile human bodies seem to prefer moderation even when our minds are seduced with extremes.

sounds very close to my point of view as well!! we are not so far apart as you may think. most of my arguments with v are for a) moderation and b) making an argument that will not push people away.
