Hi everyone,

I'm quite sad in Queensland today. I've been working a couple of days in Community Recovery assisting people with obtaining emergency money for food, contents, and structural repairs as required due to the recent floods that have devastated most of Queensland. Floods are also occurring in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, but at the moment, Queensland has been most affected with around 75 percent of our state inundated. The town of Grantham was completely destroyed. Today I will be working in Goodna where about 600 houses were completely inundated - I don't believe I've seen anything yet, but the emotions I've gone through in just two days in a nearby community has been fairly overwhelming. It's very long hours assisting very sad people, which makes it very difficult to sleep. I'm lucky my house was OK, but to see what people are going through is tough - I woke up after four hours sleep last night and just kind of felt panic, grief, anger, frustration, guilt, and most of all sadness. I'm glad that being sad allowed me to cry cathartically. I feel a lot better, but as I've said, "I aint seen nothin' yet". I will need all the strength I can muster to get through today and assist as many people as possible to rebuild their lives and communities. I have three days left of five, and am considering another stint once my fatigue leave is over, but I'm not sure if I'm strong enough. I just feel like you have to do something - as much as you can take, otherwise, you feel useless. I think by helping survivors of this disaster, we are able to strengthen ourselves, which in turn strengthens the survivors even more.

In any case, I'm thinking of all of you beautiful souls in Lindaland, and would love for some light to be spread over Queensland and Australia to assist everybody over here trying to come to terms with the effects of the recent floods.

Heaps of Love,
Dean.

Gosh, I know! It's so heartbreaking for the people. Glad you are ok Dean.
Any other knowflakes from QLD? I was wondering about that.
Thanks for doing everything you can Dean
If I didn't have two kiddies I would have loved to have been there for the queenslanders, doing something. But sending money is something.

Send light, prayers and donations if you can everyone!

“It’s an interesting thing. Seeing Kuan Yin relating to a flower so intently. She's not just looking at it; she's interacting with it…I’m seeing how the act of relating to a flower appears to be so simple. Yet, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to make such a “simple” act important. Now, the lotus is floating away.”

Thanks guys, I think your light was really felt today - at least by me anyway. The last couple of days have been so emotionally charged, but today was all about the volunteers storming in to assist where ever possible - they made cakes and sausage sizzles, gave away cans of coke and coffe, and just boosted everyone's morale imensely. What was initially worrying me in the first place turned into a blessing when I found such beautiful people everywhere - even if they were covered in mud and god-knows-what-else. The compassion and willingness to help pulled me through my fatigue and allowed me to have a very productive day. It's difficult to forget the flood smell - it permeates everything and makes you feel like you must be sick, but then a gentle breeze blows through and you can sense all of the survivors are just glad to be alive.

Thanks to all of yOu,

Heaps of Love,
Dean.

Ps. Please don't stop with the light though - it's already so effective and is still needed in many communities right through the east side of Australia.

Pps, I found out recently that you can check out what Brisbane looked like recently through http://www.nearmap.com/. The peak was on Thursday, the 13th of Januray, 2011, when the Brisbane river reached 4.45 m (from a normal 2 m deep). The river in Ipswich reached 19.5 m, but I think that must've been pretty deep to begin with. These numbers could be off - I'm just going off memory from all of the media I've been keeping up with.

I found an article a few days ago talking about how a 13 year old boy was swept away because he insisted the rescuers save his 10 year old brother FIRST.

Blessings are sent to you sesame.

Love is sent to all who need it.

Yes, that's true. The death toll currently stands at 18 with 14 still missing. Grantham was the worst hit alongside Toowoomba and the Lockyer valley, but Grantham, I believe, has lost several family members from one family, which is horrible for a very small community of its size. Most of it is currently cordoned off as a crime scene while they try to find more bodies.

I'm thinking of asking around for some sleeping pills today - it's so tough to sleep - I keep waking and forcing myself back to sleep, only to wake again. And each time feels like there's no way to get back to sleep. I feel pretty good though - it's five am over here, so I made it through the night! Today's my second last day, but I can't imagine not being deployed again once I'm allowed to go back.

Heaps of Love,
Dean.

Sorry, those last two posts should have had 's, but I think we try to post so quickly sometimes to just get out thoughts out there ASAP. I'm going to try to drink less caffeine today as that perhaps could contribute to broken sleep, but it really helps keep your energy up throughout the day.

Cheers,
Dean.
