(because it's important & many are deficient)

~~~~
Magnesium Deficiency Triggers or Causes the Following Conditions
1. Anxiety and Panic attacks- Magnesium (Mg) normally keeps adrenal stress hormones under control.
2. Asthma- Both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with Mg deficiency.
3. Blood clots- Mg has an important role to play in preventing blood clots and keeping the blood thin-much like aspirin but without the side effects.
4. Bowel disease- Mg deficiency slows down the bowel causing constipation, which could lead to toxicity and malabsorption of nutrients, as well as colitis.
5. Cystitis- Bladder spasms are worsened by Mg deficiency.
6. Depression- Serotonin, which elevates moods, is dependent on Mg. A Mg-deficient brain is also more susceptible to allergens, foreign substances that can cause symptoms similar to mental illness.
7. Detoxification- Mg is crucial for the removal of toxic substances and heavy metals such as aluminum and lead.
8. Diabetes- Mg enhances insulin secretion, facilitating sugar metabolism. Without Mg insulin is not able to transfer glucose into cells. Glucose and insulin build up in the blood causing various types of tissue damage.
9. Fatigue- Mg-deficient patients commonly experience fatigue because dozens of enzyme systems are under-functioning. An early symptom of Mg deficiency is frequently fatigue.
10. Heart disease- Mg deficiency is common in people with heart disease. Mg is administered in hospitals for acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmia. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle requires Mg. Mg is also used to treat angina, or chest pain.
11. Hypertension- With insufficient Mg, spasm of blood vessels and high cholesterol occur, both of which lead to blood pressure problems.
12. Hypoglycemia- Mg keeps insulin under control; without Mg episodes of low blood sugar can result.
13. Insomnia- Sleep-regulating melatonin production is disturbed without sufficient Mg.
14. Kidney Disease- Mg deficiency contributes to atherosclerotic kidney failure. Mg deficiency creates abnormal lipid levels and worsening blood sugar control in kidney transplant patients.
15. Liver Disease leading to liver failure- Mg deficiency commonly occurs during liver transplantation.
16. Migraine- Serotonin balance is Mg-dependent. Deficiency of serotonin can result in migraine headaches and depression.
17. Musculoskeletal conditions- Fibrositis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, eye twitches, cramps and chronic neck and back pain may be caused by Mg deficiency and can be relieved with Mg supplements.
18. Nerve problems- Mg alleviates peripheral nerve disturbances throughout the whole body, such as migraines, muscle contractions, gastrointestinal spasms, and calf, foot and toe cramps. It is also used in treating central nervous symptoms of vertigo and confusion.
19. Obstetrics and Gynecology- Mg prevents Premenstrual Syndrome; prevents dysmenorrhea (cramping pain during menses); is important in the treatment of infertility; and alleviates premature contractions, preeclampsia, and eclampsia in pregnancy. Intravenous Mg is given in obstetrical wards for pregnancy-induced hypertension and to lessen the risk of cerebral palsy and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Mg should be a required supplement for pregnant mothers.
20. Osteoporosis- Use of calcium with Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption without a balancing amount of Mg causes further Mg deficiency, which triggers a cascade of events leading to bone loss.
21. Raynaud's Syndrome- Mg helps relax the spastic blood vessels that cause pain and numbness of the fingers.
22. Tooth Decay- Mg deficiency causes an unhealthy balance of phosphorus and calcium in saliva, which damages teeth.
My dad mentioned this to me recently. I was trying to take a Vitamin D supplement that contains it (liquid), but the lemon in the flavouring, is too acidic on my stomach.
I can't agree MORE about magnesium!
I have been taking supplements and I noticed a huge difference esp. re: sleep and female-related issues.
I'm taking a synergistic calcium+magnesium product in capsules and it's really good (nothing special - you can find it everywhere). I wish more women were aware of how important magnesium is for their health!
Cal/mag should be taken in a 2:1 ratio to be most effective (for example, 1000 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium). It should also be noted that magnesium neutralizes stomach acid, so it can cause more harm than good if taken with a meal. The best time is before bed and on an empty stomach. Most other (few exceptions) supplements should be taken after a meal.
Good tip, Randall. I didn't know that it neutralizes stomach acid. I always take it on an empty stomach. The calcium/magnesium ratio is already regulated in the capsules as they are made synergistically (i.e. containing both in the right ratio).
The 2:1 ratio is to maximize absorbability of the calcium. Sometimes Vitamin is also added (many people are borderline deficient of D). Of course, it's best to get 20 minutes of direct sunlight a day for one's D, but that isn't always possible. What form is your calcium? You have to look at the elemental amount to know how much you are truly getting. Many calcium supplements are actually chalk (calcium carbonate). BTW, on a side note, many iron supplements are ferrous sulfate (rust).
^^ I don't take them separately. The same capsule is made of both in the right (RDA approved I guess) ratio. I didn't check the calcium form, I will, thanks for the heads-up. I mainly bought this one for the magnesium. Magnesium is best absorbed when with calcium. It's a "wonder supplement" for me. Very pleased with its effects.
Yes,
Magnesium is best absorbed with calcium.
However when taken within 2 hours of anti-biotics and other prescription meds,
Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of those meds.
The RDA is a joke. I take mine made together also. I take 1000/500. But I would suggest females go for at least 1200/600. Women need more calcium and more iron than men. They will put you right to sleep if taken at night.
So true about the fatique, I was gifted a bottle of magnesium oil, when applied on my body I feel I less sleep. I read that when taking supplements the liver filters out most of it, whereas absorption through the skin is much higher.
I also dilute 1 part magnesium oil with 2 parts water, it makes a great deodorant!
Bump.
I finally tried a CALM drink by again, something my sister recommended in the past. I got sick, which is wasting the money that I spent on it, and when I did keep it down, I think it constipated me, instead of the opposite.
I might try making my own gummies.
I keep forgetting to take most of my supplements. I wish I'd remembered magnesium more often, over the years. I think it would have helped with stress, knee problems, cramps, etc. When I get my period, I get the worst cramps for a few days, plus extra gross stuff that I think was mentioned above. And I have problems with my teeth, and my back at times.
I think I'm going for an epsom salt bath now. I've been depressed, and being cooped up because of the freezing weather, is starting to get to me now.
I really like taking magnesium as a supplement because it doesn't smell bad like some other supplements.
Whenever I’ve had foot or leg cramps, I drink coconut water (high in potassium; not sure about magnesium.)
Chanterelle, I have kept forgetting to restock. I use that too. Thank you for the reminder. ☺
