Hi mockingbird,This fellow makes a lot of excellent points. And I got a kick out of this one: quote: It's the universal paranoia of psychiatry that everybody who disagrees with them is pathological. You can't disagree with a psychiatrist without getting a diagnosis. I've been writing critically about psychiatry for ten years and I've always encountered that. Psychiatry is a defensive profession. They have a lot to protect and they know their weakness. To repel criticism in the strongest way possible, from their point of view, you diagnose the critic.
^ And I agree with this: quote: I believe that false positives, people who are diagnosed because there's a diagnosis for them and they show up in a doctor's office, is a much bigger problem. It changes people's identities, it encourages the use of drugs whose side effects and long-term effects are unknown, and main effects are poorly understood.
I think a diagnosis is a potentially dangerous thing in itself because it fools a person into thinking the body is more static than it actually is. And it's harder for anyone to substantiate that a person has been cured of mental illness, because the mental illness probably couldn't be quantified or observed on a biological level to begin with. However, I think some doctors and nutritionists can look at a blood panel and see indications that a person might be prone to depression, if the hormones are off or there are deficiencies. Which is why this one comment by the author perplexed me: quote: every doctor who knows anything knows that there is no biochemical imbalance that causes depression
I hope it was just a typo or oversight because of course there is. Interesting article though, and refreshing for me to see someone challenging the Establishment. IP: Logged |

Actually, I don't think there is any medical evidence of chemical imbalances. IP: Logged |

^^ Thanks for pulling those points out Faith! Randall, I know what you're saying about 'chemical imbalances'... sorta like having a 'reptile's brain'--- I think they get caught up in "fads" and present nonsense ideas around deep serious complex issues. Without their really realizing it, they do damage to a delicate area that very badly needs reformation in the state 'as it exists' today.... I think people have got to learn how to be "okay" about being just 'human'... In planetary transits, we'll be moving into months of a strong WATER TRINE.... More tears, more feelings, more depths, more emotions, more compassions and kindnesses--- I just pray for a little more Humanity in our Society and World! Weirdoes are not "thems".... Thems R US! Certain deficiencies can affect your mood for sure. I have anemia / b12 deficiency and when I forget my supplements for more than a few days, my emotions get all stupid and whiny (like PMS but not time for PMS). Same thing for vit D from sunlight - not pills. I work from home and I live in the northwest, so when it's a sunny day, I have to change my activities to make sure I force myself (and my kids) out there. If I stay inside without sunlight for too many days, I honestly lose touch with reality. ------------------ "Most people would rather be sheep and have company than stand out on their own with antlers on." — Tori Amos IP: Logged |
