So I use hair spray somewhat frequently, and I'm almost all out. Someone was telling me that sea salt works like hair spray, is more flexible and better for hair.

Who has experience using sea salt spray? Will it hold curl ringlets?

I don't even need to buy it. I can make it! http://www.ehow.com/how_5116123_make-sea-salt-spray.html

Sorry, I have no idea...
I make my pomade, which works for me because my hair is already ridiculously curly.

You could try it one night when you don't need to go anywhere, and see how it works?

(You've probably already considered that, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.)

Good luck, and let us know if it works! I do occasionally wish I had a natural hairspray.

Pomade...I've heard of that, but don't know what it is...

" is a greasy and waxy substance that is used to style hair." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomade

Oh gosh that's the opposite thing I need. My hair doesn't want to dry, and if it does it gets greasy with in 24 hours.
The only way it doesn't is if tease my hair and use hairspray. Then I can go about 4 days with out it becoming greasy.

One time it curled my hair w/ hot rollers before class, did not use hair spray. I told the teacher I did my hair. Then I go to the bathroom and my hair looked like I didn't do anything to it. haha people must of thought I was crazy.
As long as I have spray I can hold a curl okay.
I have that "fine" type hair.

Think I'll make some in the next few days. I'll be sure to share how the ocean spray works.

Cool, please do! I really would love to have a natural hairspray.

Yeah, my mom has really fine, straight hair that goes limp pretty quickly. She can't even use my shampoo and conditioner when she visits (let alone the pomade).

I made some sea salt spray. Very easy.

Haven't tried it out yet. I've just been washing my hair every other day and brushing it, and dry shampooing it on days I don't shower.

Plus I thought I'd use up my toxic hair sprays first. But maybe I'll keep some toxic hair spray on hand just in case it's stronger for certain styles that need it.

I watched a video and the lady said to be sure to condition hair after using sea salt spray.

But people with oily hair don't really need to do this because it will keep their hair from getting oily so they don't have to wash it as much. That does sound a lot like hair spray to me. My hair will not get greasy for 4 days when I use hairspray.

I had that thought as well, about the drying out part. But I suppose it's no worse than people who go surfing a lot, or spend a lot of time swimming in the ocean or a pool?

My hair has a pretty good happy medium, I think. It can get oily, but not immediately.

But then, I don't often need hairspray, so it probably wouldn't hurt too badly. I could go buy some spray bottles and try it out for myself...

Finally tried it out, and it works great! It held my pin curls as great at hair spray, and it does keep my hair dry rather than oily.

Nice!
I will have to try it out!
I've been needing something besides my pomade some days, although since I've been growing my short hair out, it's generally easier to just keep it back in a scarf or something.

But I'm going to try some, thanks for the info!

Just put it in my hair again.

This time I curled my hair with hot rollers. (the first time I pin curled) Can't wait to take the rollers our cause my long bangs I curled are wanting to drop to my eyebrows.

My guy really likes the results. When he feels my hair he says it feels like I was at the beach and that it is silky.

So far I really like styling my hair with sea salt spray and it works great for pin curling and Velcro rollers.

However for other occasional things I do like curling iron and rot rollers, I do not think its wise to use sea salt spray when working with electricity and heat since it's mostly water in the spray bottle.
(I spray my hair a lot for these methods so the curl will hold, if I don't use hair spray it looks like I did nothing to my hair an hour later.)

Does anyone have any recommendations for the most non toxic thing to spray hair with when working with curling irons and hot rollers?

Sorry, I can't help you with this one...

I have super thick, curly/wavy hair, so I never need to curl it, and I don't have the patience for a flat iron.

(You would think that with Leo Asc I would be all about taking a lot of time with my hair, but I just don't have the patience for it.)

I hope you find something that works.

I know Randall and Ami Anne were recommending Aloe to you.

It does have many uses, and I would think that would be one of them.

Probably better for your hair than Salt, I would think.

I think I'm going to try to make some of this today! My bangs are getting long enough that I need it, in addition to my pomade (which I need to make another batch of).

I have a lot of cowlicks (erghh), so I think I will try this. Probably the other stuff that I use on my hair should offset (hopefully) the occasional salt that I put on it.

I'll post again after I've made it, and the results...

In other news, I wish I could find glass spray bottles instead of plastic ones.

I do have one glass spray bottle that I bought from whole foods. Organic bug spray. When I'm though using it, I plan on reusing the bottle to make my own bug spray or some other purpose.

Stawr, did you add any oil to your sea salt spray? I made some, but most of the sites I looked at recommended adding something like coconut oil to the mix, in order to prevent drying. I guess probably not, if you have oily hair...?

I probably have fairly normal hair (maybe slightly prone to dryness, but not much), and I added coconut oil to mine (which I generally find makes my hair and face greasy when I use it). Kind of wishing I hadn't now...

We'll see...
Maybe I'll make another batch, sans coconut oil. But what an awesome tip, thanks again!

Added no oil to mine, exactly because of that. One of the first videos I watched recommended added perfume to it just so it could smell good, but I passed on doing that.

I think as long as you condition hair when showering you should be fine with the sea salt spray.
I never heard any tips about added oil.

Actually, it's been working fantastically for me!

I don't have to wear my hair up anymore, I can just use a headband, and it makes my curls look so much prettier! I use my pomade with it, but it helps a lot.

I added no gel or EOs (although it doesn't really hold my bangs in place very well, but that's okay...the rest is fantastic), just sea salt, warm water, and a small bit of coconut oil.

Fantastic thread, thank you!

That's great to hear violets!
Glad it works good, your hair sounds so pretty!

I actually ended up putting a splash of body spray in mine, that has a very tropical smell. Just to use it up. Trying to use up the spray bottles I have so can use them for other DIY projects so I don't have to go out and buy more. haha

I used to have some small Aveda spray bottles that I used for things like hand sanitizer and things like that, but they're all basically gone now (and I don't buy anything for myself from Aveda anymore).

So, until I can find some more of those lovely, blue glass spray bottles, I've had to just go with the spray bottles from the drug store. Hrmphh.

And thank you! If I get brave, I might post the picture I took for a minute, and then take it down again. It really did give my curls a nice beachy look!

I'll be using this regularly, with my pomade, from now on, I think.
