Since Linda was a big fan of miracles, I wanted to share this story of a medical "miracle." The ability of the human body to heal is still, I feel, often underestimated, and as Linda pointed out, giving a bad prognosis can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy all too easily. So, stories like this should be cherished, because they show that what was once thought impossible may be possible one day. quote: http://www.bbc.com/news/health-29645760 "A paralysed man has been able to walk again after a pioneering therapy that involved transplanting cells from his nasal cavity into his spinal cord. Darek Fidyka, who was paralysed from the chest down in a knife attack in 2010, can now walk using a frame. The treatment, a world first, was carried out by surgeons in Poland in collaboration with scientists in London." (...) (read the full story at the link posted above)
Hopefully this will develop into a treatment for many more people who have lost their mobility! IP: Logged |

That is remarkable. All in all, i have trouble accepting what is called "conventional medicine", even though i use it, and perhaps because i am using it! But it has advantages, like in this case. Buy i hate surgeries and invasive operations. Perhaps in the future our life would be better and emergency cases would diminish. Remember that almost all the cells in the body (aside from brain cells) regenerate, so a person can get over paralysis without the operation described. But it is beyond me to know exctly how. It must have to do with the power of mind over body. And don't get me wrong: My mom's life were saved thanks to conventional medicine. IP: Logged |

I understand what you mean, and to me, a middle way seems most sensible. Without the possibilities of modern medicine, both my mom, myself, and my brother would be long dead, in fact I wouldn't even have survived being born. But of course, choosing natural cures wherever possible is preferable in order to allow the body to heal itself. Just sometimes, in emergency situations, natural remedies would simply take too long to work - for instance, I would not treat a ruptured appendix only with herbs, or treat premature placenta separation during birth with acupuncture only, or try to cure an Ebola case with nothing but Reiki (all these things would be helpful though in addition to a traditional treatment, and would greatly enhance the likelihood of success). But wherever I can, I use homoeopathy, acupuncture, and plain and simple healthy living, as the preferred remedies for things that are not critical emergencies. In cases of severe structural damage of body tissue though, as described in the OP, that might just not be enough…Just think about how great it would be for so many people who are wheelchair-bound if such a procedure could give them back control of their lower body parts. It's not just about walking again, it also means bladder control etc., so this has a lot to do with a person's independence and dignity. IP: Logged |

I agree that the middle way is best, and this specific surgery does give hope to so many patients. I myself actually have had only bad experience with natural medicine! But i still think it holds the future potential for healing, because i believe in the logic behind it, the natural sources being the best suited for our body, and so does the holistic perspective. I just didn't have the luck or patience to find a good enough healer...IP: Logged | |
