My whole life I've loved, loved all these foods....around the age of 15 I started getting migraines 3-5 times a week. These lasted through my life until recently I started eating paleo and keeping a very strict watch on how everything affected me, daily I would eat very bland foods that I knew I had no reaction to then add 1 item each day and see how it made me feel....tomatoes, grapefruit and pineapple caused a migraine within an hour.
I've since stopped eating these things, 3 weeks now....only 2 migraines in 3 weeks. Not sure if I accidentally got some tomato(it's not hard to do) or if there is another trigger I need to watch. But I'm sooooo happy!! I craved all of those foods, but I'll leave them behind in exchange for no more headaches.

My guess is the acid in those foods caused the headaches....does anyone else know what else these foods have in common and what other foods also share their commonalities?

Gabby, Not the acid... more the Histamine-levels.

I had the same thing happen to me, but not until I got to age ~24. Happened suddenly with one food, then a rippling effect. Fish with scales (not lobster, shrimp, crab) was the 'first' food-find for me. ANY fish (salmon, flounder, all of them).

One doctor told me back in late 1970s that the one thing in common with all the foods I reacted to was High Histamines. I perked up, and said, O good! If I take an anti-histamine allergy product, then I can eat my tunafish subs again? He said, Unfortunately no. There are no shots, or pills to cure this....

After decades I basically found which foods were the biggest offenders.

Fish, soy products, legumes (beans, lentils), red wines, liver, extra-aged cheeses, the darkest chocolates (thank God I can eat the regular chocolates or a lighter version of the darks... just not the super-darks), beers (depends)...

I was so sad when it happened with soy milks, and those nutritional protein boost-type products.

Definitely "citrus"-- orange juice, or the whole fruit; grapefruit (especially). GRAPE JUICE! (oooh nooooo, not that?? yes, that too.) Raspberries.

Certain grains. nuts (walnuts).

"Salsa" tomatoes affects some people (not me).
HOWEVER, I can drink regular tomato juice, but the "V-8" brand products...? have a 'headache in every bottle' for me. Never figured that one out. (I used to love that juice the best!! I liked the 'celery-overtone' flavor to it. Maybe it's the celery? I haven't eaten celery in a long long time, so didn't check this out.)

Black olives affect some people.

Vinegars!... (recently, the vinegar in even the ketchup was getting to me?? *eek* ) If I go to a restaurant and have some of these foods, every SUPER once-in-a-while, and have the house-vinaigrette dressing, I'm okay... It's just if I eat it again 'too soon' that I get a reaction to the dressing.

There's a soy sauce I do alright with, but that Dr.{Bronner's sp__?} amino-acid booster that tastes like soy sauce, is a no-no for me. awww

Multiple-vitamins!... HEAD~ACHE!! began when they 'improved' their products back in mid-2000s.

Keep testing yourself, Gabby. I was quite surprised to find that some of the "healthiest (even bland) foods" I was consuming were triggers. Even those, yep.

I agree, histamine headache.

Ugh, sorry. I love tomatoes and would be heartbroken if I couldn't eat them.

What about foods like sun dried tomatoes, raw white onions, and millet?

I have trouble with all of these.

Great info mirage. Sorry you've had that problem But at least if you can pinpoint the problem foods, you can avoid the side effects.

Mine were getting worse and worse, almost constant. I did two things and haven't had a severe migraine since, just a touch of headache here and there.

1) Stopped using salicylic acid skin products http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/salicylate-allergy

2) Ear candling

The ear candling is something that I over-did, and my ears felt weird for a long time afterwards. It's controversial and I'm reluctant to recommend it. But it might have helped me get rid of the migraines.

When I was getting these migraines I was super sensitive to glutamates, not only MSG but also naturally-occuring glutamates as found in seaweed, tomatoes, and parmesan cheese. GMO wheat was another trigger (I could handle organic wheat.)

Since I've ear candled and stopped using the topical salicylic acid, I can handle these foods again (including foods that contain salicylates.) I might just get a slight headache if I eat foods containing MSG or parmesan cheese.

Everyone's different I know ~ this is just my experience.

I've never known there was a connection between ear candling and allergies?

I avoid MSG and as many chemicals/preservatives as possible. I've started following the Paleo diet.
I'm noticing now that certain a times I get a nerve in my neck that fires off and I'm not sure if that could be allergy related also.
Now that I don't have these headaches happening often it's easier to distinguish where the pain starts...this particular headache starts with a nerve pain that I was not aware I had. I don't think it's physical though because the nerve pain is not affecting anywhere else but my neck(sinus area) and into my head.

I've never heard of ear candling affecting allergies either...though I think allergies can be a symptom of congestion in the body, and when that blockage is reversed, the allergies abate.

For instance constipation is associated with candida which is associated with food allergies.

Perhaps earwax congestion makes the brain more sensitive to irritants, creating intolerance. But that's speculative.
