Hi everyone, I wasn't really sure where to post this, but since mental illness and disorders are apart of health I decided to post it here.

I've seen a lot of propaganda lately against people who are mentally ill. Mentally ill people are portrayed in the media and in movies/tv as abusers, killers and just awful people. I really wanted to dispute that so much.

Since I want to go into Health Psychology and have my own mental disorders I wanted to say this to everyone who says "the crazy people are the ones causing all this violence". There are 42.5 million American adults with a mental illness, that's 1 in 5. If everyone with a mental illness was really as horrible as the media makes us out to be there would be a lot more mass murders and crimes happening.

I'm not saying people with mental illnesses cannot be flawed, violent or abusive. I know first hand that isn't true. My mother who suffers with mental illnesses was abusive to me and my father with mental illness was abusive to my mother. However, many people with mental illness are actually abused themselves, my parents were as children and did not have the proper coping skills to break the cycle.

The truth is people with mental illness or disorders do not want pity, sympathy, or fear. Sure we have to face our own demons and it makes our lives a lot harder, but we want to be recognized as regular citizens just like someone without a mental illness.

In essence, please do not blame these mass shootings on mental illness. Most people with mental illness or disorders know right from wrong and the law, and most just want to live a peaceful life. It is zealots and other factors that is causing these atrocities, please don't believe the mentally ill trope.

There are lots of misconceptions about mental illness. most of us are aware of the truth of what you've said about it. I sympathize with anyone who has this problem.

It's so complicated. It depends on how severely sick someone is. It also depends on if they're taking medication, or if they're taking it regularly. How long they've been without medication, what type of illness they have, etc.

It's not out of the question for a sick person to do something violent, because of their sickness. But if they're medicated, most should be able to tell right from wrong.

Pharmaceutical medications generally make illnesses worse, that is what they are made for, they are not made to cure. They also calcify the pineal gland and prevent the third eye from being able to open, Linda Goodman writes about this too.

Emotional illnesses and imbalances are different from mental illnesses but people confuse the two and lump them together

This society as a whole does not know how to properly treat most mental/emotional disorders. (because most of these disorders direct causes are correlated to the broken system that we are all taking part in).

The answer lies in holistic healing and a lot of compassion, love and understanding. Also in nature. Nature provides great healing for those with emotional/mental imbalances, in fact for everyone but especially so for those suffering.

Sweet Peas is an unhealthy forum and I think this thread would add to the unhealth that exists there already.

Not to mention many have abandoned and won't post in that forum due the the rules and regulations imposed last summer.

Agree with deepseablues, people are not to blame.

Every high school shooter was on some antidepressants or tranquilisers (known as uppers & downers), these can render a person unstable... many many adverse reactions. Sometimes people get prescribed both at the same time, horrendous.... add to this Ritulin which is being overwhelmingly served to every unusually energetic child and you get the scale of the tragedy.

And then coming off these brain affecting drugs is super hard...
I tried to get my friend's 65 yr old mother off the sedatives, which were prescribed to her to mask the vile effects of other medications she had been prescribed. Very difficult case. Just google stopping antidepressants and you'll be blown away by the SEVERITY of nightmares that people get and are so scared they quickly go back onto the medication, just to stop the bloody nightmares. My fiend's mom was so terrified she lasted only 2 weeks before getting back on them.

I am not surprised that the brain of some people snaps at some point and they go off the rails and hurt others. The chemical overload damages the brain, irreversibly, simple as that.

Another issue is the ever growing compendium of modern inventions cunningly named 'disorders' or 'syndromes' which 65 years ago didnt even exist. I dont call this progress, I call this a great sales channel to push the products. The 1950's compendium of psychological diseases was 50-100 pages. Current day volume can be used as a small table...
Sleep disorder ? Just eat real food, and exercise, relax, watch a proper mineral balance esp Magnesium salts and you'll be sleeping like a baby.
Fatigue syndrome? Again nutrition, vitamins, minerals.....
The list goes on...

Hippocrates must be really **** *d off ..wherever he is..at the state of the 'progress' of civilisation...

Ancient Chinese Medicine was all about the prevention of disease and maintenance of health. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, martial and meditative arts ,and dietary therapy - the 5 pillars. In Ancient China, a doctor was paid a retainer to keep their patients healthy. If a patient became sick, then nothing would be paid until the patient’s health returned.
Sounds fair.

Yep. Today in the newspaper the front page is about a huge sum of money being granted for research for the Anti-Psychiatrist movement. It's not to say the symptoms don't exist but rather that they are not "diseases" and that more often than not psychiatry makes things worse. Not trying to step on any toes. Just sharing. Diet, exercise/yoga, and natural alternatives are beautiful things.

agree, I have studies that show that some "psych-drugs" can damage the brain independently from the "illness".
