1 kg minced lamb
125ml milk
1 thick slice of white bread, crust removed and soaked in milk
2 roughly chopped onions butter
Salt
1 tablespoon of curry powder (mix the hot and the Cape Malay versions for a good flavour)
1 chili, finely chopped (optional and only if you like your food quite hot)
½ cup vinegar
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1 teaspoon of brown sugar
1 tablespoon of chutney
8 -10 crushed almonds (optional)
3 eggs
1 clove of garlic, crushed and finely chopped
6 bay leaves
1 orange, sliced in wheels
1 lemon, sliced in wheels
Oil for cooking

Heat the oil in frying pan and add the garlic, onion and curry power. Cook over medium heat for three minutes, then add the mince meat. Fry until the meat is almost done, then using your hands, squeeze the milk from the bread. Discard the milk and add the bread, vinegar, lemon juice, sugar and chutney to the mince. Fry for a minute or so and then remove from heat.
Take a pie dish and place three bay leaves, two wheels of orange and two wheels of lemon at the bottom. Now scoop the mince mixture into the dish. Decorate the sides of the dish with the rest of the lemon and orange wheels, wedging them between the mince and the sides of the dish so that only a third protrudes. If you are using almonds, push them into the mince. Beat the eggs and 125ml milk, and pour over the meat. Put three bay leaves on top of dish. Place the dish uncovered in the oven and cook for about 30 minutes at 160 deg Celsius.

Srved with yellow rice and mango chutney.

The origins of Bobotie can be traced back to the eastern influence on South African culture.

Ah bobotie...
The first S. African dish I cooked for my first husband when we lived there.
I will never forget the look of abject horror on his face as he gamely tried to eat it without offending me.
Something had gone amiss with the topping and it was a sort of...mince with custard.

Gorgeous when done properly.
Indescribable when not!

That reminds me of the special meatpies my family makes (we're a little further north to you guys). They have no particular name to it that I know of, but I call it samosa pie because they basically take the ingredients of their samosas and throw it into a pie.

How so?

Anyways, I got a little confused. I thought that spiced meat (in the photo) was inside a pie crust...I didn't realize that was really an egg-like topping. My bad! LOL

Because meat is meat and pies are pies. I guess that isn't an oxymoron, but the two generally don't go together in American culture.

Ah, I thought as much! Unfortunately we don't have as much variety in the meat we use....its usually just ground beef or stewing beef used in our pies..LOL. I think this may call for another thread.

What is pot pie? You should try pepper steak pie then. Steak pie with a zing!

It's a chicken (or turkey) filling with veggies in a thick delicious broth with a big fluffy pie crust over the top. KFC has great ones. You can also find them in the frozen section of the grocery store.

Looooove Chicken Pot Pie, but usually straight out of the oven. Though I'm not picky about it, frozen pre-mades will do too.

*edit* Don't think I should be in this part of the forum so soon after wisdom teeth removal, its depressing as hell.
