In the books I read and on TV, I hear about certain American foods that are a complete mystery to me.....

Sloppy Joes
Grits
Hominy
Pulled pork
Biscuits and Gravy (cookies and crackers are what I call biscuits)
Corn dogs
Hushpuppies
whoopie pie
Hoagies
Root beer
Gumbo
Coney dog
Chili
Tater tots

What are these things? I'm curious.

Hi , sloppy joes are prepared from fried ground beef simmered in a savory tomato sauce, served on a hamburger bun. Since the meat mixture drips out the sides onto your plate , or clothes hence the name .

Grits , I think is made from Hominy ? Hominy is a grain I think . Comes in white and yellow varieties and looks like jumbo corn kernals.

Pulled Pork is usually prepared and grilled in such amanner , so the meat pulls off the bone easily in shreds , served in savory bbq sauce.

Cont' Biscuits and Gravy . Biscuits made from white flour shortning/lard baking powder water/milk . The gravy is a white pan gravy using the drippings from sausage .

Corndogs , are a hot dog with a wooden stick inserted then dipped in cornmeal batter and deep fried . I like mine with

mustard lol!

Hushpuppies are fried balls of cornmeal , sometimes served with cat fish or crawfish.

Whoopie Pies two cookies with cream filling between them.Available in different varieties . I've seen do not recall ever eating one .

Hoagie is a type of sandwich but I've never had one.

Rootbeer is a soft drink brewed using Aro root ? (I think) Highly carbonated it produces a thick rich almost creamy foam. It is like the "Guiness" of soda pop. My favorite way to drink it is poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a Rootbeer Float .

Cont' A Coney dog is a hotdog served on a bun with your choice of toppings i.e
Mustard , sour kraut , chilli , onions,cheese,relish... I have a friendwho told me to have an authentic "Coney" I would have too travel to Coney Isaland,NY and purchase one from a street vendor.

Chilli is usually meat beef , pork, chicken , slow cooked with or without beans;white, black, kidney, pinto. In a red or green sauce made from spicy chilli peppers ,onions, garlic tomatoes. Highly seasoned . Many different varieties including vegetarian.

Tater Tots are teeny tiny bits of potato processed and formed into 1/2-1 inch cylinders shape. Deep fried ,salted. Crispy on the outside soft on the inside. Something you might eat with a corndog or sloppy joe .

Most of these items are not very healthy. When I'm a good panda I avoid them. Once in while , I find them to be yummy

America has become a land of convenience and such our foods.

I am reading "Wheat Belly" a book that some see as a "diet" but I find the history of how we came to be wheat bellies!

Now good, ol traditional American food is substantial and nutritious. I grew up on a dairy farm and nothing was not used from our land and animals.

So the foods you have cited are traditional Amercan foods, yes, but they do not really express what we eat.
