Comfort food is hard-wired into our brains from day one. When a baby cries, usually the very first thing done is that the parents try to feed the baby, so we learn early on to associate food with comfort. This is further reinforced by others later in life--like doctors who give a lollipop after a shot or teachers who give a Hershey's Kiss after earning a star. Certain comfort foods actually change the brain chemistry in a good way. Everyone knows about the positive effects of chocolate on mood elevation. And the brain feeds off of sugar; it must have glucose in order to function. But what most people don't know is that carbs and fats cause the body to release seratonin. And when carbs are eliminated, the opposite occurs. It creates nervousness, sleeplessness, restlessness, depression, and stress. And stress hormones tell the body that you are in famine. So when you eliminate carbs, you are actually literally starving yourself. So, comfort foods not only make you feel healthy, but they are actually healthy for you...in moderation, of course...and you shouldn't eat a diet consisting of mainly comfort foods, because they lack in nutritive value. Fats are important in our diet, because fats hold our cells together and insulate them from attack. So, if you want some chips or are craving pizza, have at it. Depriving yourself may be more harmful to your health than eating it ever could be (within reason).

My comfort food is sweet potato and custard. Mum would make it for me when sad or sick and couldn't eat. It instantly makes me feel better. Grounded.

O.M.G! i didn't even know a food forum existed on this site! i never saw it listed. was it by any chance disabled or not visible for a while or something? now i can talk about astrology and food, with people who love both at the same time LOL. love this!

as for comfort foods, either of the following for me..

anything rich in chocolate
magnolias banana pudding
or very cheesy homemade mac and cheese (none of that boxed kraft mac and cheese) with bits of bacon and goldfish cracker crust

Undercarbed = basket case in the making lol

Speaking of comfort food I invented one yesterday.

Gluten fee potato cakes.

Gluten free bakers flour made into a dough and then rolled out flat and slowly cooked in shallow olive oil or coconut oil.
Sprinkled with Black Sea salt and maple syrup. Omg. So yummy!

It's wierd but it tastes just like a potato cake you get from a fish n chip shop.

The more gluten free carbs I eat and the more fruit (sugar) I consume the more weight I lose, opposite happens when I don't do this, could be my body type. I only eat good fats too. Down another pant size!

I think it's because I do feel like I'm starving when eating a protein meal- I'm gagging for carbs! I over eat when I'm not eating carbs.

I agree with that Randall. I had a vegan gluten free pizza and it made me happy indeed.
