While nearly everything in the kitchen has a shelf life, there are some pantry staples that don’t go bad when stored properly. These four foods could even outlast you.

Honey

Pure honey stays safe for consumption indefinitely. It may crystallize or change color, but it’s just fine. Revive crystallized honey by placing the jar in warm water and stirring until they dissolve.

Sugar

Sugar doesn’t go bad because it can’t support bacterial growth. It doesn’t matter if it’s the white, brown or powdered variety. Be sure to place it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry spot to keep from hardening.

Rice

Rice is another durable food. White, wild, jasmine and basmati rice can all stay fresh forever. But, brown rice won’t last as long because it has a higher oil content than the others.

Salt

Whether it’s table, kosher or sea salt, it will last for hundreds of meals to come as long as you keep it away from moisture.

Thanks for the tip on crystallized honey. I used to think it was spoiled when it crystallized.

I like fruitcake too! But it has to have extra butter/vanilla

Nope, bacteria and fungi hate honey. They found fresh honey in the pyramids. Soaking feet and limbs with early gangrene in honey has reversed it.

Oh thanks for the honey tip Randall!

I have been doing a bit of research of types of honey. Liquid clovers, eucalyptus, orange blossoms etc. Seems now they're marketing the creamy types.

Fwiw, fruitcakes that are cheaply made aren't nice. I usually like those from specialty shops, where some extra ingredients are added. I think those from airlines taste ok. they have the cream icing on top

I know this VERY quirky doc, a Scorpio that grew up in the hippy generation.

He did an experiment; he put up two tubs, one filled with rice, the other with beans, when he was in college.

He got them out after, gosh, doing a bit of brain math...30 years or so and cooked em up and and fed them to his family.

He is into the whole end of the world thing.

Now, this is the same doc who tried to tell me hydro marijuana was grown at the bottem of a lake...

I am really paying attention to these things.

I am far from a doomsday prepper, but when I semi-retire, I plan to build a bunker like thing, neath my grandpa's house.

Cause I intend to speak out about the atrocities of US healtcare, the legal/judicial system, the government and much more...and will have to retreat to my bunker so as to not get shot...in the back...or meet some other horrible demise for opening my mouth, which I find hard to keep shut sometimes!

O, and I am not afraid of some natural disaster...come what may, but the US is going to really make somebody mad someday.....

Yea, I will have my rice and beans and honey, in a bunker dug into a hill, on a fresh water lake.
