Per week, I spend around 40 dollars for 2 people.

Key is not to buy those prepackaged "meals in a box" type of foods, waay overpriced and not very healthy.

Here is my basic menu for the week:

German potato salad (no mayo uses honey mustard)
Pasta with Parmesan Cheese
Eggs ( 4 dozen)
1 pd or more cheese
Large Roast (smoked, can be pork or beef or even a Virginia Ham)
Tomatoes
Greens (these things are surprisingly expensive)
Potatoes

Those ingredients with fillins like rice and onions (pickled and slow cooked until sweet) makes everything from omelets to BBQ sammies and oven fries to bruschetta drizzled with fresh basil oil.

Good for you. I'm having a hard time explaining to some people that eating out is a HUGE waste of money.

It depends on what you value. For me, the ambiance contributes to my enjoyment of the meal. And the variety comes into play in some cases. There is a salad bar here that is huge with a wide variety of raw foods that is extremely fresh that costs only $7 bucks. I would be hard-pressed to be able to duplicate that meal for that amount of money. But if going to a nice steak restaurant or the like, yeah, you can cook that cheaper at home, but it's nice to splurge at times and enjoy being waited on. No cooking, no dishes, and just enjoying the fullness of the experience.

IMO..MOST of the time, going out to eat is a waste of $$$.

The reason why I say that is people go out and order what..they can make at home w/more high quality ingredients especially when speaking of fast serve food.

When I go out to eat, it's to try things I cannot make at home, for example fresh pork rinds or smoked whole pork belly pho or bacon wrapped jalapenos with cream cheese.

Coworker mentioned she is really short on $$$ atm, she has 4 older teen children..that would be a challenge.

40 bucks for 2 weeks in that situation could be done..but wow..lots of beans, home made biscuits and pancakes, potatoes and creative uses of chicken thighs and onions.

Can be done, it is just not what "typical American" does.

We probably spend about $100 a week for a family of 3.

I love love love the frozen Amy's entrees for lunch. Organic and GMO free. I must have them.

Padre

Big guy, you're probably a bodybuilder or weightlifter, but do you really consume a dozen eggs a person a week?

Your food budget is my envy. I have to feed two hungry boys who eat every darn meal.

I've been known to eat a dozen eggs in a single sitting. When scrambled, it isn't really all that much.

I wouldn't eat a dozen every day, but I believe that the harmful cholesterol content of eggs has been overstated.

That is very true, cholesterol has little to do with eggs, or even saturated fats.

The amount of it in even the fattest foods is miniscule compared to the amount the body produces for it to become a problem.

I live with my parents, but can't stand what they buy. So I buy my own food.

I like going organic and gluten free most of the time. Only time I spend money on gluten is if I have a pie to make or need to pick up a dessert for girls night.

The most I spend on myself is $90. I try to make food last about 2 weeks. Been easy to do thanks to holidays. My dad cooks good meals sometimes. And my guy takes me out to eat a lot.

I will admit, I like to go out to eat. But I dislike spending my money on food.

I also live in a state where I can return bottles and get money off my groceries.

What Padre said. The body uses cholesterol to patch damaged places caused by homocysteine. Then that plaque can cause other problems, but it's an emergency fix that the body uses.

I spend way less money on food since I stopped eating out. I think I have proven to myself that he best way to save on food costs is to eat in, fresh unprocessed, but also to plan my meals so I don't have wasted ingredients that spoil 'til I get around to using them. I waste less food at home now that I'm planning and sticking to my grocery list.

And, somehow, I seem to feel more full and more nourished when I share a simple meal with a guest, even if I don't eat as much.

It doesn't surprise me that you get by on $40/wk.

The only alternative to saving money on food if you eat out is to find a little place like this local downtown ethnic resturant that sells huge platters (enough for 2-3 meals at home) for $5 at the end of the day one hour before closing...and it tastes homemade because it's a small family-run business where they cook the same as "back in the old country."

Every town has its best kept secrets!!! Ask around and you are sure to find one or two worth frequenting.
