The way to tell the difference between a wild mushroom that's poisonous and the same looking mushroom that's safe to eat is by making a spore print.

April showers bring great mushroom hunting. My grandfather taught my brother, and so now my bro is the expert. For questionable mushrooms he dries them on a flat piece of white paper to study the spore print - the pattern that results from the spores dropping out. Each mushroom is different even if they look identical when picking.

He hasn't died yet, but I still cross my fingers when he cooks mushrooms for us, ha! I wait until he takes the first bite. I would not have been a very good tester for the King in days past.
