Well, I finally took a chance eating weeds from my yard. Can I dare anyone else to scavenger hunt these delicacies?

Pointed out by my next door neighbor, there were 3 varieties of greens growing in my yard that are safe and edible. I never use pesticides or harmful fertilizers on my property, so I decided to take a chance and add them to my salad.

...delicious, all three !!!

Two, I can identify.
The first has a red stem and thick leaves that look like a jade plant.
Purslane (Portulaca oleracea ). This succulent is not only tasty, but also a superfood. It contains more omega-3, mainly found only in fish, than any other green vegetable. It also contains vitamins A, B, and C, as well as minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron.
hit the jackpot with this one - healthy and tastes wonderful too

The other one is Lamb's Quarters (Chenopodium album). This plant is extensively cultivated in India as a crop. The leaves are not overly bitter and taste much like spinach. They can be either cooked or eaten raw, but should only be consumed in moderation, as they are high in oxalic acid. The seeds are high in protein and minerals and can be prepared as a grain.

Hopefully I will be able to identify the third one and report back.

Purselane is very common and a garden thug here. I have eaten it raw on salads.
Initally, I did it out of spite because it wants to choke out my veggies It was quite juicy and a mild flavor.

Many weeds are healthy and I eat them often when in season..

Also, juni is awesome :P

Sorry, not in the mood for posting, although I totally WOULD eat weeds if I didn't get weird looks about it. I can hardly pick a mulberry without being told that I'll get sick and will have to go to the hospital. Some city-grown people don't really get it at all.

I just found out that cooking lamb's quarter removes the harmful acid. So now i will be eating it cooked and prepare it like chard, instead of eating it raw in salads.

I pick stuff off the side of the road all the time. Was going to even go to a wild foraging tour around my city but it was a 100 degrees outside so didn't really happen. I recognize a lot of edible berries though and am not averse to trying out things that look edible.
I used to pick at false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) flowers and chicory flowers as a kid. Acacia fruit/ seed pods are also super tasty. Elderberry fruit is super healthy and goof for you.
Thanks for the site recommendation, PS.

Using plant life that you find around you as medicine or food is a lost art.
It was common knowledge for my ancestors.

Chickory is a weed but I buy seeds and plant it. I love it. I must need something in it cuz I crave it. I buy dandelion seeds and plant them too.

I wouldn't do that as it sounds like an unnecessary risk.

I learned to forage with some colored guides to edible wild plants and it's disturbing how much the edible and poisonous plants can look almost identical.

When I was 13 I was taught how to make poke salad. It was a tradition in my family from back in the days of the Great Depression, and also for kids back in the days when kids were essentially used as cheap labor and generally got leftovers (and given how much kids needed to eat they learned ways to supplement their diet, one of them was to gather pokeweed and make poke salad). One had to be careful in preparing it as it's somewhat poisonous, but nutritious and healthy when made right.

Poke you have to be careful with.

Only the young sprouts.
