i read while on my vacation in Bodrum the story of Hyacinth that touched me greatly. i dunno whether it was the fact that i read it while sunbathing on the amazing turkish shore on a large puffy cushion on the sand or that Ms. Edith Hamilton(the writer) is just too good anyway the story was a small segment of the book titled MYTHOLOGY: Timless Tales of Gods and Heroes, one of those tales spoke of how the popular flower named Hyacinth got its name: Hyacinth was a brave beautiful (the Greeks/romans cared so much for good looks!) young man who happened to be the great Apollo's best friend. they enjoyed each other’s company so much that they were barely apart. they engaged in various activities together like any close friends. One sad day, however, while the two friends where playing a game of disc throwing (kinda like Frisbee) the gracious young god mistakenly threw the disk with too much of his mighty power accidently killing his best friend. he lay there with him dying in his arms, the blood stained grass turned green again and from it the beautiful flower sprung that was named after the fair young ill-fated man. his deaths was mourned for years to come! the amazing thing about this story is what came afterwards, the writer shared an eye opener she said that these stories were probably just wishful thinking from the people of the time. you see before the people began to believe in the Olympian gods the act of sacrificing young men and women was very common. and the writer believes that many young youth, including Hyacinth was sacrificed by the community and in order to erase the awful truth they made up a perfectly pleasing story of his ill-fated death. Something to make the cruel death seem less cruel.
what do you think of that? How can you read into the act of sacrificing? The pure disgust of the cruelty should be cast aside for a few minutes while you look into it like a pair of scales: in that time, when people didn’t know any better, they believed that the earth needed young blood to bloom, they believed that those young “beautiful” men or women whom they loved and treasured where the only means for their survival! One man for the sake of the village, that seems fair enough..

sacrifice is such a scary word, especially when its sacrificing innocent people for the sake of "religion"what impresses me about the Olympic gods is that they were anti-human sacrifice, also against incest (even though Zeus himself married his sister) it is the only religion (which i am aware off) where the gods are imperfect, they lie, cheat, get angry and throw fits.. thats what i love about the ancient Greeks, they were so insightful..
