*inspired by Lexx's comment on the '90s thread about having pre-1920s records and a Victrola

Just curious: does anyone have a historical period/decade that really interests them? Any specific time and place (or even just one or the other) that really appeals to you?

And, too, since "Mad Men" is kind of been bringing retro stuff back into style, or at least drawing attention to it, do you collect anything from a particular era? Do you enjoy the clothing styles of any particular time?

I'm still learning about different eras, to answer the first question.

To answer the second, I just LOVE how people dressed in the 1950s up until about 1964. I really love glamor, elegance, and beauty in clothing, and I really love looks that are polished and put-together. I love watching shows and films from this time period because of how people dressed. Plus, as a curvy person, curves were OK back then and I always find it refreshing to see that on TV from that time period. (One case in point: I've been watching the marathon of "The Twilight Zone," which aired from 1959-1964, on Sci-Fi, which is an annual tradition. I love looking at how people dressed, in addition to loving the show itself).

As for collecting, I really love vintage hats, though it's hard to find them in my size (luckily, though, I happen to really like the ones that you put on with clips and pins). I have several and I do wear them (without getting too carried away or crazy). I also collect makeup compacts (mostly 1960s and older; the oldest I have is from the 1920s/possibly early 1930s) and vintage dolls (still figuring out which eras I like there). I also love reading letters from the 1920s and have a small collection of French magazines/postcards from that time period, and hope to keep collecting.

So, anyone else really love a particular time?

I am new here and I can answer your question.
I love the period of the 30's and 40's.
The 30's although a period of great depression also-if you did have money--the women's clothes were so soft and romantic. Lots of silk-I love the architecture, house styles. The 40's had WW11 but woman started taking jobs while their men were fighting the war also seems romantic to me.The music of this period was great. Swing dances and the stagedoor canteen stuff going on..

Some things from the '50s that I really love (fashion-wise):

(I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE vintage hats, especially with a veil! Trying to restore two that I have whose veils have torn and am hoping to purchase a third. I collect them. Hard to find them in my size, though, which is why I don't have more).

I so love the elegance of this time period. I HATE the sloppy and "distressed" looks of today. I hate pajamas, sweats, and scrubs in public, and the over-prevalence of jeans (that is, that they are worn to EVERY occasion, not just limited to casual venues).

I also love the curvy (but healthy) looks:

I also really love the '50s lingerie--specifically, garter belts/straps, nylons with seams, and night gowns; will try to find pics of those that are tasteful and appropriate
