she's lovely @_@ - but her hair is extremely long, long hair is more forgiving for mistakes, IME. ^^; haven't grown mine too much further than 16" in recent years, but I use to the same process when cutting it on my own. After lot of trial and error, of course. ^^; worst that can happen is ya take a bit too much off here or there... but, hey.. it grows back. ^^ no worries~ Even though I have an aunt in law with her own salon in town, we don't get to see her often, and much less have a way to see her on my own. So, I tend to keep mine fresh from splits by trimming it on my own, and then for dramatic cuts going to a salon or to her salon.

I've found the hardest part is when you reach the back of your nondominant hand (I'm ambidextrous but I still prefer my right for shears/detail work), so then it gets a bit wonky when I'm twisting my wrist and elbow in front of my eyes to get the pieces over to the front where I can see them... XD Gotta be careful with it when you have blindspots/weak arm like that. otherwise, go for it!

thank you for sharing the video, I'm checking out her others~ lol she's got a really sweet voice, don't mind listening to it! haha =x (I know, I'm a weird one!) ^^; good luck, aye!

oh that would be amazing, specially with it wavy-like. ^^ my mom had hers soooooooo long when I was little and it wasn't wavy wavy - but feathered, (70's style) but it looked so pretty!!

oh but, same as with Scorpy-prince... just one issue.... how to deal with all of that in the summer months!
Oo;

Last major haircut I had --- I asked for the Louise Brooks...

Glad you ladies liked the video!
I just got a haircut and asked for long layers. LOL. I meant SHORT layers. Like in the video. Looks like I may be doing my own hair next time. Have to watch this thing a few more times though. Farrah does a great job in explaining and showing everything.
My hair is long.

BTW, I know ail, you responded to my natural hair products thread, but have you come across anything else for shampoo? Also - coloring?

I got so excited yesterday after seeing a new natural hair dye, only to find out after some research that some of the ingredients are toxic!

Henna it is for me, for now. I just wish it didn't take 8 hrs for the thing to cover my umm grays.

oh - sorry for jumping in! @ Yin~
about the natural dyes~ lol if you're into those, I will ask my MiL what she used last time for her colour - it came out rather nicely - she's a dark brunette naturally. but gettin a bit grey now; anyway she wanted it a bit more chestnut brown, but she is severely sensitive to chemicals in other dyes/lots of things actually... so she used a natural dye... can't remember for the life of me what it was called though. I'll ask her and my sister-in-law later. ^^ k!?

Well I used primarily shampoos for moisture my hair dries out really quickly so I use Organix's shampoos and conditioners. You could use indigo on your hair first than apply the henna to create a darker longer lasting color. You could even use a really strong black tea as a rinse than apply the henna.

My suggestion is to watch all the vid you can to really "get" the hang of it and how different positions of the ponytail will effect desired lengths of layers.

I posted about this a number of years ago here. Have been cutting my own hair since.

Best of luck Yin. Youtube vids out there can be very helpful. You might even want to take notes then when you get enough confidence and understanding up - go for the big cut!

Great thing about it is, hair always grows back. lol

I searched for safe true indigo awhile back, but never ended up getting any. I ended up dying the very bottom tips of my hair blue (yes, on purpose) and it came out quite nice. Was inspired by a dream I had in which I had a head full of electric blue hair. Pretty neat. Though that was a fun little phase, i am sticking to natural dark hair now.

I've now moved onto razor combs and thinning shears (i think that's what they are called). Picked them up from Sally Beauty Supply. Once you learn how to use them be careful not to go overboard with the cutting. They can be nice if your hair ends up a bit choppy. Use them to blend the choppy layers in.

Hey, T! I remember you posting about cutting your own hair. You should make a tutorial and put it on YouTube!

I'm sticking with henna for coloring. Indigo is great too, I have some and have used it before but I like the natural red tint I get from just henna. (Can never get enough red!) There is this site: http://www.hennaforhair.com/ which has how to's and a forum to talk and show your hennaed hair too. My only problem with the henna is that it takes a long time, so I've been sleeping with it in my hair and waking up with a stiff neck and a headache. :\ The things we do for beauty!

I would love to be able to cut my own hair! Those thinning shears are a blessing for thick and straight hair like mine. I should visit a Sally Beauty Supply soon.

I wouldn't dare to cut my own hair unless it's going to be an extreme new look. Lol!

I had some of my mane chopped too - still longish though, but my problem is to get more body into it. :\

Try henna for volume! It works wonders on me.

Argh. Been there and done that.. doesn't work for me.
Your mane seems to have a natural fullness to it.

almost forgot about this thread!

Yin, I shouldve taped my last cut! I went really short as I was so tired of the long heavy hair in this hot weather.

After browsing lots of styles and watching lots of vids, researching professional haircutting sites, I went for the look I wanted and now have an angled bob. (a thread in astro reminded me to come back here and post)

It came out really nice. Looks great straightened with an iron or with loose tousled waves. I like the low maintinence, but think I might grow it past my shoulders and keep it around that length.....or keep it short, we'll see. I like it this way now, but do miss long hair sometimes. Don't think I could go back to waist length Rapunzel hair again though. lol

Have you used Amla before? You can find it at most Indian markets. It's popular nourishing treatment for hair, but can also be used as a skin cleansing and exfoliating mask. I love the way it makes my skin feel afterwards. Check it out!

Yeah, I guess you have to have some balls to cut your hair, nevermind going for a completely new look like I did.

Might not be a good idea for anyone to try, but I think years of cutting myself and being artistic helped.

I've never been happy with haircuts others have given, but always happy with the ones I've given myself.
