This may be transferred to another Forum but I want to pick your brain on music.I am so impressed that you are a professional musician on the sax. Are there many women who play sax? ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. It is Free, of course. http://www.mychristianpsychic.com/

Ooer, a thread addressed to me. lol Well yes, there are far more around than you'd expect, especially in America. Lots of extremely talented female jazz players, for example, some fairly young (I'm not good at remembering names!). Unfortunately women still often get judged by how they look before their musical talent (men don't usually get judged on how "hot" they are, well maybe by female audience members!). It's a fairly patriarchal business still, and it seems the only way women can really fight to be heard and taken seriously is to start bands of their own. Just my experience really. I like to look presentable on stage but I'd much prefer to receive a compliment about my playing than how I look. I had a good experience in the past two years in California in the music scene and really improved my playing and made good contacts, I'm back in UK now and after a period of not playing much have got my inspiration back all of a sudden (was just practising my horn now! lol). I think having a more permanent home base has helped that. Thanks for thinking of me.

AMAZING! I'm a swing lover myself. Forget about Elvis, Glenn Miller is king! The saxophone is such an amazing instrument! I'm really impressed. Do you perform in London? Is this your living? Do you play swing music as well, or mostly other forms of jazz? IP: Logged |

Hi Sybil, well I only got back to London 6 weeks ago and had to find a place to live (thankfully I'm settled now). Being away from your home town for 2 and a half years and then coming back was a bit of a culture shock (California and London are slightly different, as you know!). It seemed like I'd made my life and musical contacts over there, but as much as I love many things about America, I also missed things about home (also my mother is still alive and lives just up the road from where I now live. )Anyway I've reconnected with some of my old music contacts here and will hopefully be out gigging and earning money soon (will probably take a normal job too to cover the bills). I might do some private tuition too. I love swing music too, I was playing in jazz big bands in the US which played lots of swing style jazz, also a swing blues boogie band which was quite fun. My main love is funk and jazz fusion though, I got to play that out there too. It was fun and inspiring. I should have done it years ago really but better late than never. IP: Logged |

Ok then... So anyway, who fancies some midnight sax with their cup of cocoa as they warm their feet by the fire? Don't worry about the neighbors, they're deaf. IP: Logged |

Hi Jo I am fascinated by professional musicians. How did you come to get to this point? How did you start? ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. It is Free, of course. http://www.mychristianpsychic.com/

Well I played various musical instruments as a kid (as I'm sure many people do at school) - violin, flute, piano, then finally picked up the sax aged 15 because I was inspired by a particular band (UB40 actually) who had a sax player. I just thought it was the coolest most glamorous thing ever and was itching to do the same. So then I got into a female jazz band at my all-girls school, had visiting sax teachers and joined the borough's big band. I also got in with a small group of great musicians who did "jazz fusion" (jazz mixed with elements of funk, latin etc). We were all around 17-19. We won a national competition when I was 19 in the small group category. I was immensely proud of that. lol. I'd studied music at school and then did a music degree at university. It's a tough business though. There have been periods when I haven't really played and just done normal jobs, like secretarial. But music has always been an important part of my life and people have said I'm a natural and should never give it up so I just keep plugging away at it. I've toured in the past and been on TV so it's had its moments. I just bought a flute today (similar fingering to saxophone) from the local charity store. lol. I like mixing up the instruments a bit, I also play keyboards and write/record music on my home studio. I enjoy composing as much as playing. IP: Logged |

Sounds like you would adapt to the wind synth really well. Electronic Wind Instrument. You can program in any instrument sound and listen through headsets so you can practice without bothering anyone. I prefer acoustic instruments but the wind synth has its own character and offers much to woodwind musicians as a solo instrument. Don't ever give up acoustic if you are such a natural musician, though. Nothing beats live acoustic sound. Can you post a short audio clip here playing your sax? Love to hear you play IP: Logged |

I have a website PlutoSurvivor but I don't really want to mix this forum with my professional life. I love the EWI when it's played well (Michael Brecker, for example, was amazing at it) but I never fancied it personally. It's actually quite hard to play too. Do you play at all? IP: Logged |

Ok, I understand about posting. My friend has 2 EWI instruments. I've played around with one and it is difficult because the "reed" takes a lot of wind to play and a technique that has to really be mastered to get good expression out of it. I played clarinet in beginners band in college and don't remember anything about the fingerlings. So I just fooled around with the keys and settings. The octave touch pad was hilarious with the low notes. Hoooonnkkkk! IP: Logged |

Nice. I always liked this track by Steps Ahead featuring Michael Brecker (playing In A Sentimental Mood on EWI). He was just amazing. (There are lots of live versions of him playing this on youtube too) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R3IbCgx9pU IP: Logged |
