I was born in New Orleans and I have a French surname. I look at the records of the people who have my SURNAME and they all come from France but look nothing like me. Where am I supposed to find out where my surname came from?

You could go to a public library and check records. Really search long and hard online. There are no other options if you don't have any family who can help.

A library card will grant you access to Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest or even American Ancestors - all reputable ancestral databases. Librarians love family history research. Call your local library
