Sometimes people have such a burning desire to find answers to their questions that they will ask just about anyone for a tarot reading.

Please, dear querents, be careful whom you ask. Your heart is open when you are asking an important to you question. Why trust the first person who promises to know the answer? Please use your judgement.

Not all readers are of the same skill level. Let's leave aside those who are deceptive.
How can you tell if a reader is good?
At least two things:
1) his or her message is clear and free of ambiguity (no double-talk and vagueness),
and
2) he or she gives you specific answers (specific cards, specific messages, specific facts).

Practice judgement when you approach a reader with this open heart of yours. Protect yourselves from gullibility.

Tarot cards can be hard to get a concrete meaning out of.

Actually that's another common misconception. Although reading the Tarot is not an exact science, there are very concrete and standard meanings for each card. That's why it's possible for anyone to get trained in reading the Tarot by learning the standard meanings of the cards.

However, beyond mastery of the standard meanings, once you learn to engage your intuition, you can start reading intuitively and develop your own feeling for each card, which enriches the reading for specific querents and is a truly admirable thing to witness in any such intuitive reader.

What is hard is for a person who doesn't understand how the Tarot works to figure out which reader IS the real thing and which one is a fraud. Because querents are pretty emotional about their questions, they invest a lot when asking a reader and so they are open and vulnerable to them. For this reason, I suggest that querents are careful in picking their readers. If something is off, do not ignore your feeling about the reader. Pick someone you like and you feel you can trust. No sense in trusting someone you fear or dislike with your open and vulnerable heart.

A personal anecdote: a few years back at a alternative and mystic therapies fair in London, I spotted a booth where people were offering very cheap readings. There was a queue and the readers were all busy, you had to get a number and wait forever for your turn. I did and as luck had it, my reader (chosen in random just by availability) was a man in his 60s or so. He scared the f*ck out of me! I did not like him right from the first look I took on him. Something was completely off (in how I felt about him). I regretted asking a reading. The emotional coloring of it was grim and scary. It took me several days to recover. I had to nurse myself emotionally if you know what I mean to forget his "black" reading and get back to normal.

Bottom line: choose your reader carefully to avoid getting under anyone's bad/negative spell.

I understand the meaning of each card but often find it difficult to really apply them to my situation. Maybe that's my bad for not giving enough background to the reader about the situation, because I always thought it was better to figure out myself how the cards applied to me.

Was it that he got grim cards or that he put a black spin on the interpretations? Or everything was fine and he just felt like a creep?

As a querent, you will need a lot of help to understand a reading. Some readers are not good in putting their intuitive visions into words and so part of their intuitive talent is "lost in translation" if you know what I mean. Ask questions and provide the relevant background to the reader so they can connect the dots for you. Refrain from giving too much information as this might make the rational mind of the reader to respond to you (instead of their intuitive one). As I point out in the "common misconceptions" lesson, it is not about counselling and tarot reading won't fix your problems. It can give you much valuable perspective into the situation though and many problems are solved easier when seen under a different light.

That man just had negative "creepy" energy. He pulled no cards, he was (or pretended to be) psychic. He was menacing in his manner and completely impersonal. That is why I say stay away from anything that *feels* wrong; this feeling is your intuition speaking. Go with an open heart with no fear but once you get a feeling that something is off, remove yourself off the situation quickly and do not allow anybody to play with your mind. Too many people when in need tend to become gullible so I thought I needed to point that out.
