Hi all and happy new year!

Before I proceed looking at the Rider-Waite deck in some depth, I was wondering if you have any questions about the tarot and tarot reading in general. Any questions will do. I will compile them and incorporate them in the lessons presented here. They do not have to be related to the lessons posted so far, but it would be fantastic if I had more questions related to that material as well.

Your feedback is welcome and very much appreciated!

Thanks, sand!
So from what I gather from your input above, there are two worthy questions here:
1. How do you shuffle when you are not the Querent or have no Querent in front of you (as in online readings)
and
2. How accurate is it to read the tarot online?

Thanks again! Great questions. I will definitely incorporate those in my lessons. Watch out for new strings coming out soon.

i was thinking more about websites that give you your cards but i guess the tarot readings like the ones people give each other in Personal Readings is related to my question as well.

^^ OK, thanks, makes sense!

So, question #3:

3. how reliable and accurate are the online automated readings?

Thanks, C!
I'm definitely including it.
Feel free to add whatever comes to mind.

Next up, I will do a little comparison of different or equivalent cards across decks to help newbies understand and appreciate how different decks work with similar (though not necessarily identical) symbolism.

How do you like that?

I gots another question:

If you're pessimistic about a situation, will the cards reflect that in a reading and give a slightly more negative answer?

Interesting question.
When you're saying "you" whom do you mean? The reader or the querent?

Hmm, I originally meant the querent, but what would the pessimism of either one of them do to the reading?

Thanks, that's a good question.
I will respond here.

The way the Querent poses his or her question is important in terms of energy. Remember that we're talking about intuitive readings. The reader will pick up on the Q's energy. Sometimes this energy reflects the situation, and some other times it's just the Querent's energy and not that of the situation's. For example, some people are negative in general or like drama, or seek attention through negativity. You can ask the most neutral question in the most emotionally "loaded" way.

Now, regardless of the Q's energy, the cards -if the reading is done right- will attune to the energy of the situation. If the energy of the Querent is relevant (and not just inherent negativity or a liking to dramatic exaggeration), the cards will often have an advice about that. However, if the Q's energy has nothing to do with the situation, it won't affect the reading. Again, a certain skill is necessary for the reader to focus on the "meat" of the question and skip any irrelevant influences.

Could the way the Querent poses the question affect the answer? In general, yes. Why? Because it affects the way the Reader perceives your question. And how the reader perceives your question influences the reading.

Here's an interesting example:

Let's assume that we have two Querents asking a very similar question:

Querent1: Will I win the lottery?

Querent2: Will I lose the lottery?

You can tell by the way they phrased the question that they have very different expectations. Q1 expects to win and asks with the goal in mind. Q2 is more pessimistic and is motivated by a fear of loss.

Now an experienced reader will read both questions the same way ignoring the different feelings expressed by the Querents. But this isn't always the case.

Readers reading too close to such questions may actually mislead the cards. Consider for instance that you get the Sun card of the Major Arcana as a response to Q2. How are you going to interpret such positive card in light of the pessimistic question? Is it a "yes, you will lose" or is it a "yes, you will win"??

So, a big part of it depends on the skill of the reader. The cards themselves remain uninfluenced but since the reader interprets them, it is imperative that the reader has a clear picture of the question in his/her mind and if not always seek to figure it out together with the querent. A change in attitude in the querent is ideally what you wish to achieve but people don't change just because we tell them to. Change comes from within. You can advise and suggest ways of dealing but you cannot change someone's pessimistic attitude or his/her life as a result of that attitude.

Hope this helps.

Is it better for the querent to ask a question without explaining why they're asking to help prevent the reader from picking up on their emotions?

*Edit: Nevermind. I just saw your topic on how to phrase questions.

Hi Anon. I was kind of messing around, trying to interpret cards for myself, without reading too into others' interpretations. Hope I'm not jumping ahead too far, but I pulled the reversed 9 of Cups to represent my perception of someone. I'm looking at it as my opinion of them and not as a divine representation of them (hope I'm on the right track by going about it this way). I wrote my interpretation from a more personal standpoint. Can you let me know if I'm going in the right direction? This is all that I have so far:

9 of Cups (reversed): You feel that heís turned his back on you and everything you offered to him. You feel that you could have made him happy, but this was impossible because he doesnít want you. He has worked to end your relationship, or so thatís how you feel. His arms are crossed and his back is turned to the prizes that most others would covet, but just not him. You think that heís waiting and looking for something more or better to come along. You see him as a collector/chronic cheater.

Delilah,

When it comes to interpreting single cards in isolation, you can just look up the meanings.

To help you with the particular reading, I would need to know what other cards were pulled and what spread you used (if any). Why did you take 9 of cups reversed to talk about your perception of this person? This sounds like you followed a particular spread, so why don't you tell me what other cards you got and how each position was interpreted in that spread.

In general, the 9 of cups is a good card even in its reversed form. It talks about wishes and fulfillment/satisfaction of a long-held dream. The reversed 9 of cups may indicate that things will come about unexpectedly and might take you by surprise.

Regarding your interpretation below:

quote:
9 of Cups (reversed): You feel that heís turned his back on you and everything you offered to him. You feel that you could have made him happy, but this was impossible because he doesnít want you. He has worked to end your relationship, or so thatís how you feel. His arms are crossed and his back is turned to the prizes that most others would covet, but just not him. You think that heís waiting and looking for something more or better to come along. You see him as a collector/chronic cheater.

I can see how you interpreted the symbolism in combination with the reversal of the card. I would think it is a bit too "dramatic". This isn't a guy who "turns his back to his prizes" for instance. He's simply guarding them sitting in front of them fully satisfied and in power/control. The reversed interpretation is still a positive one: it may symbolize a guy who is perceived as driven by his dreams and passionate for what he "owns" (possessions and relationships).
This person is perceived as powerful and passionate, steadfast and driven by his dreams, someone who knows what he wants and won't hesitate to go after it.

Lol. I was in a bit of a mood when trying to interpret the cards and still am quite blue.

I did a mirror reading to see how someone, who's sometimes special, feels about me and I couldn't see anything other than gloom and doom. These are the cards and their positions, using the RW deck:

1. You: 2 of Swords reversed

2. Your perception of him in relationship: 9 of Cups reversed

3. How he sees himself: Death reversed

4. What he signifies to you: The Moon reversed

5. What you signify to him: King of Cups

6. Problems to overcome: 8 of Wands reversed

7. Positive Aspects: Ace of Cups reversed

8. The Result: Knight of Cups

I think my emotions interfered too much in trying to figure it all out and connect the cards, so I won't re-write my interpretations for them.

I thought all reversed cards were bad, except for the 5 of Pentacles, so I ran with that idea. Can the Death card reversed be good? If this represents how he feels/sees himself I can't help but think that maybe he hasn't had or been allowed closure before being forced to move on or maybe he's glad that it's no longer in his hands. Also, most of the cards are reversed and the end result is the Knight of Cups. From what I've read about this card is that it's not a good indication when it comes to love/infatuation; it's a constant wanderer and doesn't stop to settle for long. I saw it as meaning that there will never be a permanent foundation, but disappointment one after another or parting for good.

My paranoia and distrust are unfounded. He's said a little to try to convince me of his sincerity, but they're only words not proven or dis-proven by action.

Don't worry. It's hard to read for ourselves for this very reason! Objectivity is out the window! LOL

Not all reversed cards are bad and it *always* depends on context, i.e. the rest of the cards in the spread.

Your q inspired me to get back to the lessons. I just didn't think there is enough interest. Thank you

Yeah, I'm finding that it's nearly impossible to silence my own fears and doubts. I'd like to do a reading for his future love life, being the nosy girl that I am, but even then my emotions would be too involved.

Curiosity aside, I'm like Good Luck Chuck for guys, except there's no sleeping around. All I have to do is develop a crush and feelings for a guy and he'll meet the love of his life before the year is over. No joking. It happens EVERYTIME! So, I'm wondering what it's going to be like for him to finally have "the one".

Well, I'm interested. I'd like to give readings at some point without worrying if I'm totally off the mark. Not sure about everyone, but it would be interesting and great to have definitions for the cards and discussions for different views.

Had to smile upon reading this.
I know how it feels.
But there is still hope for us methinks. Don't give up.

Thanks for the encouragement. Seriously the feedback has been so poor I'm pretty unmotivated to do any more of this.
I will do it for you though. I'm the type of person who likes feedback and questions and dialog when teaching. I like to feel there is someone who is actually benefiting from this.

Do not hesitate to ask anything about Tarot that you need help with.
If it's in the word place, I will create a new thread for you. I forgot that not everyone can create a new topic in this forum.

Well I'll add a question cuz I'm so good at it how important is it to use reversed cards? When I 1st started working with my cards yrs ago, I found it extremely difficult to understand their meanings so I stopped using them in my readings. To this day I still don't. But does it make a big difference? Like would I get more in depth answers?

Is the readers intuition the main thing with Tarot. Are the cards the outward manifestation of the readers intuition?
