Next to the Sun, Moon and Asc. Mercury is the most important factor in a horoscope. This is because Mercurys position by sign, house and aspects to the other planets indicates the individuals degree of intellegence, mental attitudes and ability to think and communicate.

The closest major aspect to Mercury indicates the predominate mental interest and intellectual focus of the individual. This is because Mercury itself is a neutral planet.

If Mercury is found in a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagitarius) the individual is capable of mental leadership and tackles intellectual problems with energy and self-confidence. However, egocentric mental attitudes can be a danger.

If Mercury is found in an earth sign (Taures, Virgo and Capricorn) the individual is mentally concerned with matters of practical value and application. He/She evaluates ideas on the basis of their practical usefulness. The danger here is an excessively materialistic outlook.

If Mercury is found in an air sign (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) the individual is interested in ideas and intellectual pursuits for their own sake. These people's communications are often concerned with social relationships, psychology, and group endeavors. There is the danger of an overly theoretical, impractical mental outlook. The individual must remember that the best idea is of no use unless it is put into action.

If Mercury is found in the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces) the individual's thinking is colored by emotional factors. Decisions are often based on intuitive feelings. These individuals are capable of communicating their emotions and are receptive to the feelings of others. However emotional biases, distorted reason, or inaccurate perception of reality must be guarded against when mercury is found in this element.

Mercury/Cardnal the individual is decisive in following a course of action and in drawing conclusions. If carried to far can result in impulsive decisions.

Mercury/Fixed the individual is slow and deliberate in making decisions and usually unwilling to change them once they are made. If carried to far irrational, stubborn attitudes can result.

Mercury/Mutable the individual is adaptable and flexable in making decisions and draws upon past experience for guidance. If carried too far may make decisions that are irrational in terms of his present circumstances.

Although so-called adverse aspects made to Mercury can cause mental conflicts and problems, they do tend to activate the intellegence. Therefore its better to have a poorly aspected Mercury than a Mercury without any aspects.

from Predictive Astrology by Sakoian and
Acker

although important in delineation I personally put the ruler of the Asc. before Mercury in order of importance.
What sign is your Mercury in and what is the closest to exact aspect that it makes?

You're awesome for doing all of this lalalinda .

Heh, well, the ruler of my asc is Mercury anyway. Mercury in Aquarius in the 9th house here. The closest exact aspect it makes is to my Pluto:

Mercury Aquarius 11.20

Pluto Scorpio 15.10 R

Mercury in Aries in the Sixth house ~
I think the closest aspect it makes is to the Sun in Aries. It also squares Saturn and trines my Midheaven.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents
(or less) on mercury.

To me, mercury in the horoscope is not only how the individual communicates with the outside world, but also how the individual communicates with him/herself.
Mercury is the planet of cognition, logic, and reason. It rules how a person formulates thoughts, organizes speech, and also the inner dialogue that goes on inside of us.
Because mercury rules speech it also, along with venus and uranus, rules friendships
and relationships. Mercury rules relationships on a fundamental level, as the most important factor in how people evaluate us is usually how we speak. In my opinion, mercury becomes almost as important as the ascendant in how others perceive us, as it literally owns what we say and how we say it.

Mercury in Aries: Merc in aries are typically good at arguing. These people are quick to add in their knowledge if they can contribute, and won't back down. They are confident speakers who convey confidence, and generally believe in their intellectual abilities. Their voices are almost always clear and audible.

Merc in Taurus: Although not the quickest on the uptake, merc in taurus have good memories. They may not learn something very quickly, (how many times do i have to repeat myself?) but once they have it they may have it for life. Merc in taurus is often attracted to very logical forms of thought, and enjoy structure and order. Their voices may be a bit muffled or nasal.

Merc in gemini: Merc geminis are the quickest thinkers of the zodiac, but not always the most organized people. ALways moving on to the next thought before the current one is resolved, merc geminis wil have the next problem figured out before the rest of us even get to it. Merc geminis are intelligent, but they tend to overestimate their intelligence. They have a tendency to speak very quickly, with great detail, and sometimes speak a bit too loudly.

Merc cancer: Merc cancers like to talk and think about the past. These folks are highly sentimental and emotional. They are often organized and neat, and will often have a penchant for romance and drama. Their voices are often soft and difficult to hear.

Merc Leo: merc leo is really cool. What they say is gold, and don't you forget it. Merc leo are very stubborn in their opinions and dont' back down in an arguement. Merc leo is very confident in her intelligence, and speaks with an air of confidence. Merc leo is also known to be very comical/demonstrative with their mannerisms/facial expressions. This natives voice is often loud and boisterous, and sometimes you might hear the inflection of a child.

Merc virgo: Merc virgo is all about the practical and real. Merc virgo can pick apart problems and errors quickly, and is second only to gemini in processing speed. merc virgo typically excel on tests/exams because of their rational thought processes. However, this native may have trouble focusing on the big picture in life, and get hung up on minor detail/annoyances. Merc virgo has a nasal voice but is concise and humorous.

These are just my intepretations, they may be wrong, I'll try to finish em later.

mercury in gemini in the 7th house

i am a stereotypical merc in gem as I totally identify with the interpretations.

i speak my feelings out all the time and now I wanna stop.

because the 7th house is the house of friendships and i will have none if i carry on...

Hello-

I have Mercury in Virgo, 12th house

Tightest aspect is Saturn Trine Mercuy 00'07

I have done a littel reading up on Mercury in 12th and found that it works much like a Mercury retrograde:
http://www.donmc.com/mercuryin12th.htm

Found the part about speech impediments or communicating in an unusual manner to be true for me. My friends tell me that i have an original way of phrasing things and i actually did stutter until my teen years.

I agree with BlueRoamer on much except the voice part... Merc virgo has a nasal voice but is concise and humorous. But otherwise Right on

Hello, lalalinda!

Your method of teaching this is incredible... you've reached a nice balance between letting us do the work on our own so we know what we're doing, but providing us with feedback so we know if we're doing it right. I really am amazed!

I have mercury in capricorn in the first house. The tightest aspect is square pluto with an orb of 0 degrees. Did I answer the second part of this correctly? Were you looking for the closest orb?

Thank you!

Also, in response to your last post, you mentioned that if virgo or gem was the asc, merc is the ruler of the chart. My asc is sag, but my first house is capricorn. I don't completely understand this... do you have time to explain?

Hi lalalinda,

I have mercury in Leo on the 2nd/3rd house cusp at 27°23'05. According to astro.com it is stationary.

Also according to astro.com I have these aspects:
Mercury Square Jupiter 1°53
Mercury Square Neptune 3°05

But Im not very clear in aspects (yet - Im working on it!)... so since its on the cusp, can you say that it either conjuncts my south node in the 2nd house, or that it conjuncts my sun venus and pluto in the 3rd, depending on which house it is interpreted in?

Or am I talking complete bollocks?!

I think I'm Gemini rising, I relate to what I've read about Gem rising (though some charts say Taurus rising)
Anyhoo - Mercury , I have Mercury in Libra in 5th House at 17 degrees 45' 7" and Sun in Libra 5th house at 16 degrees 25' 52"
I concur that your explanations are very clear, handy & helpful LL

My Merc trines jupiter (4°) and is conjunct my Gemini sun (6°).

I think the conjunction, though a wider orb, is the more important.

Mercury in Aquarius 11th house. Mercury conjunct Mars in Aqua 2°02. Also trine Jupiter (4°43) and Saturn (5°19) and is Sextile my Aries ascending (4°43). I think the conj. with Mars is the most important.

Is that right?

Sun Conjunction Mercury 0°43
Mercury Trine Mars 1°14
Mercury Opposition Jupiter 4°07
Mercury Square Uranus 4°04
Mercury Conjunction Ascendant 3°43

So, I guess the closest aspect would be the Sun, right?

Blue Roamer,
I have Merc in Virgo and the nasal voice thing is right on target. Everyone who knows me can tell you my voice is different to say the least!
