All planets have their own unique energy harmonics and characteristics. When we talk about the effect of aspects, what we are talking about is how the two planetary energies associated with the two planets will interact with each other. Some aspects are harmonious or aid each other’s energy (Conjunct, Sextile, and Trines) and some are inharmonious and conflict with each other’s energy (Square and Oppose). However, in some cases, like the “Sun conjunct the Moon”, the results can be less than harmonious. The following are some of the general energies associated with each planet:
Moon – the unconscious mind, automatic emotional responses, memories
Ascendant – one’s self-image, expression of the “Self” in the world
Sun – willpower and creative potential
Mercury – thinking, reasoning abilities, communications
Venus – artistic abilities, sense of harmony, growth through relationships
Mars – expressed energy, assertiveness
Jupiter – expansion, awareness, personal values
Saturn – patience, determination, restructuring one’s life for growth
Uranus – sudden unexpected changes, intuition, rebalancing
Neptune – clouds the vision and introduces new ideas, psychic abilities
Pluto – transformation, rebirth
North Node – cultural trends and fads, path of spiritual growth
Keep in mind that each of the meanings is only one part of the whole, and as such are affected by other events in the chart. A chart must always be viewed as a Gestalt, not just a series of individual meanings.
The following aspect meanings in part are taken from by Frances Sakoian and Louis Akers’s book “The Astrologer’s Handbook”. Their work in my opinion is one of the best on understanding the natal chart. I highly recommend it for those just getting started in reading natal charts.
Ascendant
Conjunct – their basic consciousness tends to be completely identified with their emotional nature. Their imaginations are very lively, and if directed positively in their work can be very productive, providing increased admiration from others, and an increase in their self-image. Their whole life and character are heavily affected by their early life experiences in an intensely emotional and personal way. They identify very strongly with their families and home.
Sextile – gives harmony and emotional balance between their conscious and unconscious minds. They have strong self-images and work well with others in mutual endeavors.
Square – this aspect creates emotional difficulties with their self-expression and their manifestation of energy into action. Relationships suffer under this aspect the most, because their actions are not in line with their emotional desires and needs. They may not be able to act decisively when they need to, confusing those close to them.
Trine – this aspect bestows a graceful, harmonious personal expression and appearance. It is especially favorable for woman, enhancing their beauty and charm. Their pleasing qualities and gentleness of manner bring them popularity and romance, and favorable relationships. Their awareness and consideration of other’s and their willingness to cooperate bring the same back to them.
Oppose – indicates that their emotional reactions are in conflict with their expression of self. They feel one thing internally but express an entirely different emotion to the world. This aspect can be very hard on their health, because so much emotion is withheld and internalized. The behavior springs from early childhood conditioning where they learned that to be accepted and loved, their real emotions were unacceptable and should never be displayed to the world.
Sun
Conjunct – The Moon’s emotional energy is harmonious with the Sun’s willpower when the Moon is conjunct to your natal Sun, indicating that your emotional nature is aligned with and supportive of your willpower and goals. They need to take care that the solar energy doesn’t overpower the lunar energy, because this can affect their health. If they take active control of their activity level, and don’t overdo it, get plenty of rest, this can be avoided.
Sextile – this aspect confers the ability to establish close friendships and have good communications with the opposite sex. They make very good parents, and have a loving relationship with their extended families. Their health in enhanced by this aspect, and they tend to be at peace with themselves.
Square – this aspect is not considered positive in that it confers an innate conflict between their emotional nature and their willpower hampering their self-expression and emotional security. Their unconscious reactions keep interfering with their conscious desires.
Trine – indicates a harmonious interaction between their emotional expression and the conscious will power. Strong physical vitality is usually associated with this aspect. They have a nice balance of Ying and Yang potentials, giving them both a masculine and feminine awareness of their environment. They function well within their society, and have good self-confidence and optimism.
Oppose – indicates a conflict between their conscious will and unconscious mind and emotions. They often suffer relationship problems. Their health can suffer due to their internal struggle, and their vitality fluctuates erratically. They have problems as parents, because of their own difficulties as a child. They must try to forget or at least come to grips with the past, in order to move forward.
