When you do your basic natal chart, what (if anything) is the significance of an empty house?

Are there any aspects that may fill the gaps, so to speak?
For example, I have an empty 10th house; from what I gather the 10th house holds information about your career path, so could I, in a manner of speaking, 'fill' this by looking at aspects in my chart related to, say, Saturn, Capricorn, Virgo, or Mercury?

Also, can anyone tell me definitively what the 5th house represents?
I've read on here that it is shallow relationships, flings and the like, on the net I've seen it termed "love affairs", in yet another interpretation I've seen it entitled "pastime".
Could it maybe be summed up by calling it "creative pursuits"? Or am I way off base here?

OK, I just found this:

"No planets in the 8th house? Then look at the planet that rules the Zodiac Sign located on the cusp (beginning point) of your 8th house and the planets that aspect that planet. For example... if the sign on the 8th house cusp is Aries, then look for Mars and the planets that aspect Mars in your natal chart."

Does that ring true to anyone?

i'v never really paid any attention to empty houses....well, i did in the beginning, but i was only mildly interested...it doesnt matter much to me personally because i have so many empty houses

in fact the only houses with any planets in them are 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8....so i concentrate all of my energy on learning the significance of those

I once saw a sign that said "sin is death" but if "all deaths are suicide (linda goodman)" and suicide is sin, then shouldnt "death is sin" be more appropriate?

Good way to look at it Nicki, I'm always intrigued by what is 'missing' though.

Thank you for the link Sand, I will check it out.

Hi Voix_de_la_Mer,

It definitely does not mean you will not have any action with regard to matters related to that house, but it may show that your energy does not tend to naturally 'settle' in those areas.

When you have empty houses, as everyone does and is of no huge concern, you will also normally have houses that have added influence. They will have a planet placed in them and that planet will be ruling an empty house so it will carry doubled influence, it carries more weight than if it ruled a house that was tenanted. And if you have houses with more than one planet, or even a stellium, then that house will definitely be taking up a sizable portion of your interest.

Maybe Mercury rules empty 10th, Pluto rules empty 12th, and they are conjunct in the 3rd in Aquarius. You could be very keen to have your career (h10 ruler) being related to research of matters related to 12th house themes. Mercury conjunct Pluto especially inclines to having a very keen penetrating mind, placed in the 3rd with h12 ruler maybe you're good at uncovering secrets, you could be an excellent investigative reporter. That is still a career. The difference is you have your focus more on the mental side, the subtle tricks up your sleeve that are involved in that work that make you great at it, than having an emphasis on every action you take being coordinated in order to move you up the ladder (that methodical way of moving up in the world is related to an emphasized 10th). Hopefully this gives clarity.

"so could I, in a manner of speaking, 'fill' this by looking at aspects in my chart related to, say, Saturn, Capricorn, Virgo, or Mercury?"
---Look first at the sign on the cusp, you will need to channel that signs energy into whatever you do. Then look to its ruler, what sign is it in, is it exalted, in detriment, what house is it in, what aspects does it make. Also if there is another sign that is in your 10th then its ruler could be called the secondary ruler of your 10th and would give more information. Also look at your progressed chart. What sign is on the cusp of the 10th, is it the same? If it has changed from natal maybe now you have new aims that you need to incorporate into the info you've already ferreted out from looking at the natal alone. Also important for career related matters are placements in the 2nd and 6th and their rulers.

"the 5th house"
---The 5th rules the creative impulse, that spark that makes you feel alive. Some create by having children and devoting their life to nurturing them, some make art, some have affairs to feel alive and experience romance. It is about the simple fun of being here on earth, what do you do that brings you joy and makes you feel like a kid again. Many people remark that falling in love brings out a playful childlike side to them, a vulnerability and openness and a sense of risking it all for something that could bring them pleasure, that is the 5th house. When we play with children we make silly faces and enter into their world, that is the 5th, it is alive and it is looking to create and to experience something new, it has no problem taking a risk. Usually someone has to pass our 5th house needs for relating in order to progress to something more committed and permanent. Most romantic relationships stay in the 5th house stage and never move on.
